were observed in infected pigs. Scanning electron micrography showed nematodes embedded in the mucosa of the cecum and colon, with resultant disruption of the mucosa. Infected pigs had decreased values of albumin, amylase, calcium and creatine phosphokinase, but increased values of alpha-, beta-, and gamma- globulins, total iron-binding capacity, copper, potassium, uric acid, and aspartate aminotransferase.

Pyelocystitis results from ascending infection of the urinary tract with Corynebacterium suis in sows.
Infection
occurs regularly during coitus by healthy boars, which are often contaminated with Corynebacterium suis. Characteristic clinical signs of pyelocystitis are haematuria, anemia and
emaciation
. The whole urinary tract shows severe purulent-necrotic inflammation with progressive vascular lesions. Diagnosis is based on clinical, pathological and bacteriological findings. Distinct changes in urine samples are present. Treatment is only successful in sows with intact function of kidneys. In early detected cases treatment can be effective with repeated application of appropriate antibiotics, e.g. penicillin or ampicillin. There are no proven methods of prevention.

Eighty-one barn owls (Tyto alba) and five Hawaiian owls or pueo (Asio flammeus sandwichensis) from Kauai, Oahu, Lanai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii (USA) were evaluated for cause of death, November 1992 through August 1994. The most common cause of death in barn owls was trauma (50%) followed by
infectious disease
(28%) and
emaciation
(22%). Most traumas apparently resulted from vehicular collisions. Trichomoniasis was the predominant
infectious disease
and appeared to be a significant cause of death in barn owls in Hawaii. Pasteurellosis and aspergillosis were encountered less commonly. No predisposing cause of
emaciation
was detected. Stomach contents from 28 barn owls contained mainly insects (64%) of the family Tetigoniidae and Gryllidae, and rodents (18%); the remainder had mixtures of rodents and insects or grass. Three pueo died from trauma and one each died from
emaciation
and pasteurellosis. We found no evidence of organochlorine, organophosphorus, or carbamate pesticides as causes of death in pueo or barn owls.

We studied the causes of death in 295 patients (mean (+/- SD) age 70.5 +/- 13.2 y.o.) with active non-MDR pulmonary tuberculosis who died in our hospital between 1991 and 1999. A hundred and twenty eight patients (43.4%, group A) died of tuberculosis, while 167 patients (56.6%) of other accompanying diseases. In 46 patients of the latter (15.6%, group B), pulmonary tuberculosis gave an unfavorable impact on their clinical course. In these patients the extent of pulmonary tuberculosis on chest roentgenograph was similar with the remaining 121 patients who also died of the accompanying diseases (41.0%, group C) and was less severe than those of the group A patients. Their nutritional conditions measured by serum albumin and choline-esterase level on admission, however, were as low as those of the group A patients and distinctly worse than those of the group C patients. Most patients of groups A and B died within 3 months after admission, while less than half patients of group C died during the same period. The age frequency distribution of the patients in groups B and C had a single peak in the age group 70 to 89, while that in group A showed two peaks, one similar peak as in groups B and C, and another peak in the age group 50 to 59. The numbers of homeless patients, of the patients with extensive cavitary lesions, and of the patients who died of ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome) or severe pneumothorax in group A were the most also in the age group 50 to 59, indicating that the patients' delay in admitting to hospitals was the major cause of high motality in this age group. As to detailed causes of death in group A, patients died of respiratory failure (32 cases),

(28 cases), progression of pulmonary tuberculosis (20 cases), ARDS (15 cases), tuberculosis-related diseases such as pneumothorax, hemoptysis, and DIC (24 cases). In groups B and C patients died of organ failure (36 cases),

The environmental conditions and daily life in the ghettos of Europe during the holocaust are reviewed, and their effect on morbidity in different ghettos is scrutinized in an attempt to construct a typical morbidity profile. The outstanding characteristics were: crowding, shortage of basic necessities (such as food, clothing and medications), harsh environmental and sanitary conditions, inclement weather, poor personal hygiene, chronic undernutrition and malnutrition, physical and mental exhaustion. Ontario has embarked upon a program to restore elk (Cervus elaphus) that were once native to that province. A comprehensive disease-management strategy has ensured that elk are free of
infectious diseases
such as brucellosis and tuberculosis prior to shipment to Ontario. Postmortem analysis occurs on elk mortalities in Ontario to ensure that elk are not infected with diseases such as chronic wasting disease and tuberculosis. Between 1998 and 2001, a total of 443 elk were transported from Elk Island National Park, Alberta, and released in four different areas of Ontario. Cumulative mortality for elk in all areas was 26% from 1998 to January 2001. The primary causes of mortality were post-release stress-induced

(21%), wolf predation (20%), transport/handling injuries (10%), bacterial infections (10%), and drowning (7%). Female calves had the highest mortality rates (37%) compared to the other sex and age cohorts (23-24%). Preliminary findings suggest an inverse correlation between the length of time elk are held in enclosures prior to release and the distance they disperse from the release site. The 2001 estimated population of elk in Ontario is about 400 individuals.

Infection
disease due to Listeria monocytogenes, which is a ubiquitous positive Gram bacillus to the essentially alimentary transmission, listeriosis happens on patients presenting an immunodeficiency. The authors report the two first cases of listeriosis diagnosed at Hopital Principal de Dakar. The first case was observed on a 73 years old man, hospitalised for a feverish coma scored at 9 using Glasgow scale, with neither meningitis syndrome, nor sign of neurological localisation. The analysis of the RLC reveals a hypercytosis at 126 GB/mm3, with prevailing neutrophile polynuclears, a hyperproteinorachia at 3.2 g/l. The culture of the RLC was sterile but the blood culture showed the presence of L. monocytogenes. The other paraclinical tests has revealed a glycaemia at 2.45 g/l, an imporant hepatic cytolisis with ASAT at 13 N and ALAT at 20 N. The patient was also presenting a cerebromeningitis and hepatic listeriosis on a diabetic field. The second case was observed on a 58 years old patient admitted for headaches, fever and an important degradation of the general state with an
emaciation
of 17 kg in 5 months. The physical screening revealed a bad general state, a fever at 38 degrees 2 and was without other particularity. The analysis of the RLC showed a hyperproteinorachia at 1.35 g/l with neither hypercytosis nor germ at the culture. Haemoculture isolated Listeria monocytogenes. HIV serology was positive. CD4 were counted to 61/mm3. and the viral charge was at 110.000 copies / mm3. The patient was presenting a Listeria monocytogenes at meningo-encephalitis on HIV-1 field. stade B of the CDC classification. This ubiquitous anthropozoonosis should be searched through early haemocultures before antibiotherapy. in case of long lasting fever, endocarditis, meningo-encephalitis, localised infections on children. pregnant women, diabetic persons, and people infected with HIV and some others presenting immunity troubles.

Tropical canine pancytopenia (TCP) is a newly recognized
infectious disease
of dogs in diverse tropical and subtropical areas. The disease is characterized by hemorrhage, pancytopenia, severe
emaciation
and persistent infection. Dogs with TCP are often presented with epistaxis, which is the most dramatic sign of the disease; however, a large number of affected dogs develop severe pancytopenia and die without manifesting clinical signs of hemorrhage. The disease has been reported most frequently in the German Shepherd. Pathological findings consist of petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages on serosal and mucosal surfaces of numerous organs. The most prominent histological finding is a perivascular plasma cell infiltrate in most organs. Disease, indistinguishable from the natural disease, has been produced in laboratory dogs inoculated with whole blood from affected dogs. Ehrlichia canis has been consistently recovered from all experimentally infected dogs. Attempts to transmit the disease to other laboratory animals and to propagate the agent in cell cultures and embryonating eggs have been unsuccessful. The tick is the probable vector of the disease.

Concentrations of four perfluorinated contaminants, including perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), were measured in liver tissue from 80 adult female sea otters collected from the California coast during 1992-2002. Concentrations of PFOS and PFOA were in the ranges of <1-884 and <5-147 ng/g, wet wt, respectively. Concentrations of PFOA in the livers of these sea otters were among the highest values reported for marine mammals to date. Liver tissue from 6 male sea otters also was analyzed and contained significantly higher concentrations of PFOS than did tissues from female otters. To examine the association between exposures and potential effects, concentrations of PFOS and PFOA were compared among the adult female otters that died from

, noninfectious causes, and from apparent
emaciation
. Concentrations of both PFOA and PFOS were significantly higher in sea otters in the
infectious disease
category than in the noninfectious category. Concentrations of PFOS and PFOA were not significantly different between noninfectious and emaciated otters, suggesting that the poor nutritive (body) status of emaciated otters did not affectthe concentrations of perfluorochemicals in livers.
