Evidence has begun to accumulate that suggests there may be gender differences in the presenting symptoms of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Identification of gender differences has implications for both health care providers and the general public. Women should be instructed as to the symptoms expected with ACS on the basis of evidence obtained from studies that include both sexes. Twelve studies that identified symptoms of ACS for both women and men were identified through a review of the literature. In several of the studies, which included all types of ACS, women had significantly more back and jaw pain, nausea and/or vomiting, dyspnea,
indigestion
, and palpitations. In a number of the studies, which solely sampled patients with acute myocardial infarction, women demonstrated more back, jaw, and neck pain; nausea and/or vomiting; dyspnea; palpitations;
indigestion
; dizziness; fatigue;
loss of appetite
; and syncope. Men reported more chest pain and diaphoresis in the myocardial infarction sample. Results of these studies showed that women and men experienced the same symptoms with ACS. However, in some studies there were gender differences in the proportion of symptoms. Given the current state of the science, definitive conclusions regarding gender differences in the symptoms of ACS cannot be drawn. Further study is urgently needed to clarify and expand on these findings.

Patients with cancer frequently report gastrointestinal symptoms such as
anorexia
, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, and bloating. A reduction of the severity of some of these symptoms would benefit the patient by enhancing quality of life and improving their treatment. Forty-eight patients (25 female and 23 male; mean age 63 +/- 11 years) with a minimum two-week history of cancer-associated gastrointestinal symptoms were assigned to a single, open-label treatment group and received controlled-release metoclopramide 20 mg-80 mg q12h for a maximum period of 12 weeks (mean 46 +/- 35 days). There was a 40%-60% decrease in the severity of nausea over the first two weeks of treatment, and an approximate 50% reduction in severity of vomiting over the first four weeks of treatment. Appetite and bloating also improved, although smaller and less consistent changes were observed. Patient ratings of overall clinical effectiveness with respect to relief from symptoms and tolerability of side effects indicated that controlled-release metoclopramide was highly and moderately effective in 36% and 30% of the patients, respectively. Controlled-release metoclopramide is a useful treatment for the management of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with the cancer-associated

Nearly one-half of the most frequently reported and most distressing symptoms in patients with advanced cancer are gastrointestinal in nature. This prospective study was designed to assess the frequency of gastrointestinal symptoms among inpatients admitted to a palliative medicine program with advanced cancer. Twenty-nine men and 2l women, with a median age of 64 years (range, 35-84), were interviewed about 17 gastrointestinal symptoms. Age, gender, diagnosis, and medication use were also recorded The most common diagnoses were cancers of the lung (n = 14), breast (n = 6), and prostate (n = 4). Dry mouth (84 percent), weight loss (76 percent), early satiety (71 percent), taste change (60 percent), constipation (58 percent),
anorexia
(56 percent), bloating (50 percent), nausea (48 percent), abdominal pain (42 percent), and vomiting (34 percent) were the 10 most common gastrointestinal symptoms. Women had more gastrointestinal symptoms than men (median 8 vs. 6, p = 0.018), although this finding was not statistically significant (p = 0.11) after excluding gender-specific cancers. Women had more taste change and diarrhea than men after excluding gender-specific cancers (p = 0.036 and p = 0.046, respectively). Those with primary gastrointestinal cancers (n = 8) had more

and hiccups than those with nongastrointestinal cancers (n = 39). There was no age difference in symptomatology. The drugs prescribed most commonly were opioids (n = 40), laxatives (n = 38), H2 blockers (n = 29), appetite stimulants (n = 29), and antiemetics (n = 29). Findings support that gastrointestinal symptoms are very common in hospitalized patients with advanced cancer and that the frequency and type of symptoms differ with gender and gastrointestinal vs. nongastrointestinal primary site.

This study is aimed at investigating the biochemical and histological effects of Mentha piperita L., growing in the Yenisar Bademli town of Isparta City, and Mentha spicata L., growing on the Anamas high plateau of Isparta City, on rat kidney tissue. Forty-eight male Wistar albino rats weighing 200-250 g were used for this study. Animals were divided into four experimental groups, each with 12 rats, as follows: control group (group I); 20 g/L M. piperita tea (group II); 20 g/L M. spicata tea (group III); 40 g/L M. spicata tea (group IV). The control group rats were given commercial drinking water (Hayat DANONESA water). The tea for the other groups was prepared daily and provided at all times to the rats during 30 days as drinking water. Plasma urea and creatinine levels were determined, and the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were studied in the homogenates of kidney tissue. The levels of plasma urea and creatinine were increased significantly (P < 0.0033) in groups III and IV when compared with group I. The activities of SOD and GSH-Px were decreased significantly (P < 0.0033) in group IV when compared with group I. The activities of CAT were decreased significantly in groups III and IV (P < 0.033, P < 0.0033, respectively) when compared with group I. TBARS levels were increased significantly (P < 0.0033) in groups III and IV when compared with group I. In groups II, III and IV, hydropic degeneration of tubular epithelial cells, the epithelial cells with picnotic nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm, tubular dilatation and enlargements in Bowman capsules were observed histologically. However, in group II histopathological changes were more slight than in groups III and IV. In group IV, in addition to these changes, extremely hydropic degeneration of tubular epithelial cells, some atrophic tubules and glomerules, and focal mononuclear cell infiltrations in the kidney tissues of the rats were observed. In conclusion, the results indicate that M. piperita does not show nephrotoxicity but M. spicata presents markedly nephrotoxic changes in rats.

The plant Mentha piperita, or peppermint, is commonly used in the treatment of

In this study, we aimed to investigate biochemical and histological effects of M. piperita Labiatae, growing in the Yenisar Bademli town of Isparta city, and Mentha spicata Labiatae, growing in the Anamas high plateau of the Yenisar Bademli town, on the rat liver tissue. Forty-eight male Wistar albino rats weighing 200-250 g were used for this study. Rats were divided into four groups of 12 animals: Group I received no herbal tea (control group); Group II received 20 g/L M. piperita tea; Group III received 20 g/L M. spicata tea; and Group IV received 40 g/L M. spicata tea. Herbal teas were prepared daily and provided at all times to the rats during 30 days as drinking water. Liver function tests, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST/GOT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT/GPT) activities were measured. To evaluate liver antioxidant defences, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) activities were determined in the homogenates of liver tissue. In addition, liver tissues were submitted for histopathologic examination. AST and ALT activities were increased in Group II, Group III and Group IV gradually when compared with the control group. The difference between Group II and the control group was not statistically significant (P > 0.016). Increases in AST and ALT activities of Group III and Group IV were statistically significant when compared with the control group. SOD, GSH-Px and CAT activities were increased in Group II when compared with the control group but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.016). However, SOD, GSH-Px activities and the TBARS level were significantly increased, and CAT activity was significantly decreased in Group III when compared with the control group. In Group IV, while SOD, GSH-Px and CAT activities were decreased, the TBARS level was increased as compared with the control group (P < 0.0016). Histopathological evaluation of experimental groups revealed a mild to severe degree of hepatic damage when compared to the control group. In Group II, there was only minimal hepatocytes degeneration. In Groups III and IV, there were granular or ballooning hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis, sinusoidal and central vein dilatation. It was concluded that lipid peroxidation and hepatic damage occurs after M. piperita and M. spicata administration in rat liver and the damage seems to be dose dependent.

dyspepsia
in relation to age and the presence or absence of alarm features in 678 African-American and Hispanic patients. Five-hundred-thirty patients were investigated by upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy, 88 by barium radiographs of the UGI tract, and 60 patients had both endoscopy and barium studies. The most common alarm feature in our study was age >50 years, followed by anemia, weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding,
loss of appetite
, early satiety, abdominal mass, and dysphagia. The presence of alarm features and older age increased the likelihood of finding an organic lesion. It is concluded, therefore, that endoscopy in our dyspeptic patients who had alarm features appears to increase the diagnostic yield and may consequently result in a more favorable therapeutic outcome.

The health effects of long-term ingestion of rare earth elements (REEs) on the villagers living in high-REE-background areas in South Jangxi Province, China were studied. Major health complaints from the REE area population included
indigestion
, diarrhea, abdominal distension,
anorexia
, weakness, and fatigue, especially after high-fat or high-protein intake. Liver function tests were conducted for adult villagers. Among them, 45 live in a heavy rare earth (HREE) area, 62 in a light rare earth (LREE) area, and 49 in the control area. Test results showed that serum total protein and globulin from both HREE and LREE areas, as well as albumin from the LREE area, were significantly lower (p < 0.01 - 0.01) compared to the results from the control area, whereas albumin from the HREE area showed no significant variance (p > 0.05). The chi-square test showed that Serum-glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) in both areas were not significant (p > 0.05), whereas the IgM in the HREE area was significantly elevated. It is our conclusion that long-term ingestion of REE affected activities of some digestive enzymes, causing malabsorption and
indigestion
, and might further lead to a low-protein effect for the villagers in the LREE area. However, the damage to the liver was rather mild. The elevation of IgM was probably the result of stimulation induced by the formation of a large amount of granules as a result of direct binding of REEs to globulin or albumin (combination of REEs with globulin or albumin).

The regional distributions and frequencies of argyrophil endocrine cells in gastrointestinal (GI) tract of Balb/c-nu/ nu mouse were studied using Grimelius silver stain after abdominal subcutaneous implantation of COLO205. The experimental animals were divided into two groups, one is non-implanted group (Sham) and the other is COLO205- implanted group. Samples were collected from GI tract (fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon and rectum) at 21 days after implantation of COLO205 cells (1 x 10(6) cell/mouse). In this study, argyrophil cells were detected throughout the entire GI tract with various frequencies regardless of implantation. Most of these argyrophil cells in the mucosa of GI tract were generally spherical or spindle in shape (open type cell) while cells showing round in shape (close type cell) were found occasionally in gastric and/or intestinal gland regions. The regional distributions of argyrophil cells in COLO205 were similar to those of Sham. However, significant decreases of argyrophil cells were detected in COLO205 compared to those of Sham except for the jejunum and ileum. In the jejunum and ileum, argyrophil cells in COLO205 showed similar frequencies compared to those of Sham. In the pylorus, the most dramatically decreasement of argyrophil cells were detected in COLO205 compared to that of Sham. Implantation of COLO205 tumor cell line induced severe quantitative changes of argyrophil cell density, and the abnormality in density of GI endocrine cells may contribute to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms such as
anorexia
and
indigestion
, frequently encountered in patients with cancer.
