Although the SAC generally are healthy and tolerant of a wide variety of management schemes, a number of noninfectious diseases have been documented to occur, affecting all body systems. Gastrointestinal diseases appear to be the most common afflictions, particularly dental diseases,

, ulceration of the third compartment, and the various causes of colic, such as enteritis, peritonitis, and intestinal accidents. Diseases of the urinary system (
urolithiasis
, amyloidosis, and glomerulonephritis in particular), the nervous system (especially various compressive lesions of the spinal cord), and the respiratory system (such as obstructive pulmonary diseases) are not uncommon. Diseases of the cardiovascular system (other than congenital defects), hemolymphatic system, and nonsurgical diseases of the musculoskeletal system only rarely are encountered. Heat stress appears to be a very common problem in certain areas, but other metabolic diseases (ketosis, hypocalcemia, and hypothyroidism) are of minor importance. It is assumed that SAC are susceptible to most of the same toxicities that affect domestic livestock species. The best documented examples appear to be the Ericaceae family of plants (laurels, rhododendrons, and so on) and the organophosphate chlorpyrifos. Neoplasia occasionally is seen; examples include lymphosarcoma, gastric squamous cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma. As the longevity of these species increases because of their pet status, neoplasia can be expected to become more common. The treatment of most of these conditions is based upon extrapolation from domestic ruminants.

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of 'fast-tracking' in an academic emergency department (ED) during a period of limited resources and space constraints. This was a prospective, double-blind, comparative clinical trial. Fast-tracking was applied every other day between 08.00 and 17.30 hours. Patients meeting fast-tracking criteria, which were determined as allergy,

, hypertension, urinary tract infection,
urolithiasis
, gastroenteritis, upper airway infection, minor lacerations, and soft tissue injuries with no sign or symptom of life-threatening illness or acute abdomen, were treated by a designated fast-tracking team. In the alternate days fast-tracking was not done, and the patients having the same criteria were recorded and followed as the control group. ED length of stays were determined for each patient, and at time of discharge a questionnaire was applied to determine patient satisfaction. Follow-up was performed by telephone survey at the 5th day of discharge. The median length of stay was 36 minutes for the fast-tracked group compared with 63 minutes for the control group. The application of fast-tracking decreased ED length of stay and improved patient satisfaction in patients presenting with allergy,
dyspepsia
, upper airway infection, minor laceration, and soft tissue injury, but not in patients with gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection, hypertension, and
urolithiasis
. The rate of follow-up was 81% (n = 217), and there were no complications or hospitalizations to another hospital. It is concluded that fast-tracking is an applicable and useful system in an academic ED with limited resources, and decreases ED length of stay and improves patient satisfaction in a selected group of patients. Determination of fast tracking criteria must be individualized for each hospital according to resources. Additionally, fast-tracking seems to be safe when performed under strict criteria for patient selection.

, gastro-oesophageal reflux, chronic primary stipsis, irritable bowel, biliary dyskinesias, mainly hypokinetic gallbladder and Oddi's sphincter, spasm, postcolecystectomy syndrome. The therapeutic effects of mineral waters are determined by their anion and cation content, the presence of undissociated salts and also by the presence of oligoelements. Additionally, the effects of a mineral waters are connected with physical constants: osmotic pressure and temperature. Many researches showed activity of the mineral waters on intestinal autonomic nerves and plexus (CIA), motility, exocrine, endocrine and paracrine digestive secretions and therapeutic properties belonging to evidence based medicine. Mud and bath therapy are effective in treatment of osteoarthritis. During and after mud-therapy effects on diencephalic-pituitary-adrenal axis were displayed, producing increase of endogenous opioids and cortisol. Clinical controlled trials showed significant improvement of symptoms as pain and stiffness. Inhalant therapy by sulphureous and salsojodic mineral waters improve symptoms as cough and escreate and functional indices as FEV1 in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Patients must drink at least 2L every day, substantially for ever. Chloruratesodic and bicarbonate mineral waters show improvement in disorders of lipidic and urate metabolism.
