This study evaluated fixed partial dentures bonded with resin to dentin on posterior teeth with minimal tooth preparation. The patients included were missing at least one premolar or first molar. The abutment teeth next to the modification spaces were moderately restored with MOD or class II restorations on most of the teeth. A total of 20 patients with 23 fixed partial dentures were included in the study. After removal of existing restorations, the abutment teeth were prepared to eliminate undercuts on the perimeter of the preparations. Undercut areas within the preparation were not filled but were blocked out later in the laboratory. The fixed partial dentures employed inlays as retainers for a metal ceramic pontic. The metal framework was cast in a high noble gold alloy. The areas of the retainers to be bonded were treated with the Kulzer Silicoater method. Immediately before cementation, enamel was etched and exposed dentin was treated with Gluma. Kerr's resin bonded bridge cement was used for cementation. Patients were recalled after periods of 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 4 years for evaluation. None of the restorations lost retention and no major adverse effects were observed in the 4-year follow-up period.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on dye penetration during in vitro microleakage analysis of composites. Fifty non-carious human molars, stored in 75% ethanol, were divided into five groups (N = 10). Each tooth was prepared for a MOD slot preparation using a high speed handpiece and water, one proximal cervical margin in cementum, the other in enamel. The enamel margins were etched, rinsed, dried, and the composite inserted and cured in multiple increments. Group A was not thermocycled (TC) and was immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin dye for 24 h at 37 degrees +/- 1 degrees C. Group A' was not TC and was immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin dye for 4 h at 37 degrees +/- 1 degree C. Group B was TC in a water bath and immersed in dye as with Group A, Group B' was TC and immersed in dye as in Group A'. Group C was TC, as in Group B, but in a basic fuchsin dye bath. Thermocycling consisted of 250 cycles, 15 s dwell time each in 5 degrees C and 50 degrees C bath. The teeth were mounted in acrylic, and multiple cross-sections of all surfaces were prepared. Dye penetration was read on a scale of 0 (no leakage) to 4 (leakage to the pulpal floor) and means calculated for each surface and tooth. There was no significant increase of microleakage in restorations when thermocycling was used to simulate temperature extremes, either in dye or water baths, as opposed to restorations which were not thermocycled.

The tensile bond strength of noble and non-noble castings luted with adhesive resin cements and zinc phosphate cement to prepared extracted teeth having received MOD amalgam restorations were compared. The crown preparations were standardized on the extracted teeth to produce axial wall length and taper consistent with that seen clinically. Results indicated the resin luting agents were significantly more retentive than the zinc phosphate cement and for each cement there was no difference in the casting alloy used.

Discoloring and layers on bands and restorations during fixed orthodontic therapy are well known clinical phenomenon. Because of the complexity of etiological factors an in-vitro model was used in this study. Aim of the study was to examine the amounts and sort of metals which are dissolved. Therefore, respectively 25 normed MOD-cavities in Frasaco-teeth were filled with a non-gamma-2-amalgam (Amalcap plus, Vivadent) and condensed manually or mechanically. In addition, ten crowns of a high golden (Maingold SG, Heraeus) as well as a palladium basis alloy (Albabond A, Heraeus) were casted. Then they were banded with stainless steel bands (Dentaurum) and cemented with a glass ionomer cement (Ketac Cem, Espe). The probes were given into a 0.1 molar lactic acid for seven days at 37 degrees C. Using ICP (ion coupled plasma) analysis the corrosion solution was examined for elements. High levels of Zn- and Al-ion contents were found, which are components of the used cements. The filling materials themselves mainly set free small amounts of Ag, Sn or Cu. The steel band released Fe, Cr, Ni and Ti. The combination of filling material and band resulted in a higher release of most ions.

To evaluate the effect of 26 weeks of moderate- and high-intensity walking training on injury rates in the elderly, 68 healthy volunteers (31 men, 37 women) were assigned to moderate intensity (MOD, n = 26) or high-intensity (HI, n = 24) training, or to a control (CONT, n = 18) group. To achieve prescribed training intensity, many subjects walked uphill on a treadmill. Seven of 50 subjects who trained (14%) suffered a training-related orthopedic injury; one subject was injured during treadmill testing. Four training injuries (lower leg and foot) occurred during weeks 1-13; three training injuries (leg and groin) occurred during weeks 14-26. Six of the injuries were to women. Because only one training injury occurred during uphill treadmill walking, injuries appeared related to fast walking and not exercise intensity. The higher incidence of injury in females is consistent with our earlier work, indicating the importance of further research to determine the underlying cause.

The software driving the Cerec CAD/CAM system has recently been updated. In this study, the marginal accuracy of computer-machined porcelain inlays was determined using the original and the updated software. Two types of MOD cavities in Frasaco resin teeth were prepared with either sharp or rounded box corners. The distance of the occlusal and proximal marginal interface was determined using a measuring microscope. The mean occlusal interfacial distance was 52 microns for both programs. Only the box corners showed a significantly larger space, of which the mean value was approximately 200 microns. The updated version improved the marginal accuracy at the box corners. Further reduction of the interfacial distance was accomplished by rounding the sharp box corners.

Stresses induced by the influence of variations in the dimensions of three different parameters of MOD cavity preparations were studied using the finite element technique. The parameters studied were the depth, isthmus width, and the thickness of the remaining interaxial dentin. A total of eight different cavity designs, divided into three groups, were compared with the normal (unprepared) tooth and other cavity designs in the same group. Enamel and dentin experienced large regional variations in compressive stresses even in normal teeth. Teeth with prepared cavities showed even more variation, and stress combinations became critical from a tooth fracture point of view. It was seen that narrow but deep cavity preparations and wide and equally deep cavity preparations experienced a similar, damaging combination of stresses. It was deduced from the stress patterns observed in this study that the depth of the cavity preparations is the most critical factor in fracture of the tooth or cusps, whereas the width of the isthmus alone is the least critical.

It has been traditional either to cast invested wax patterns immediately after the investment has set or to store the invested patterns in a humidor for casting later. This study compared the fit of MOD inlays to parent dies after casting immediately following set of the investment, after casting 1 hour following the setting of the investment in air, storage in a humidor for 7 days, and after storage in air for 7 days. The only significant differences in fit were in the group stored in a humidor, and then only at the axiogingival junctions.

There is currently no consensus of opinion regarding form of the finish line for porcelain inlays. This study compared beveled and nonbeveled finishing lines. Twenty-four Class II MOD cavities of a standardised design were prepared in extracted premolar teeth. Twelve were finished using a half enamel occlusal bevel and 12 were not beveled. Porcelain inlays were fabricated and luted with a dual-polymerizing resin material. The completed restorations were stored in water, thermocycled, and analysed using a scanning electron microscope. The quality of the enamel/composite resin interface was found to be considerably better than that of the inlay/composite resin interface. The adaptation of composite resin to enamel was of equal quality for both beveled and nonbeveled preparations.

Butt joint, plain and round beveled MOD cavities were prepared in extracted human molars. Composite resin inlays (SR-Isosit) were fixed adhesively and analysed by quantitative SEM-evaluation after thermocycling and mechanical load application. The marginal adaptation of the inlays differed significantly depending on the type of cavosurface preparation. Best results with a high percentage of perfect margins not only before but also after in vitro load application were obtained with cavities prepared with rounded bevels.
