Binge eating, eating an abnormally large amount of food in a discrete period of time with a sense of loss of control over eating, is a defining feature of the eating disorders

BED
and BN are important public health problems for which there are few medical treatments. However, almost all drugs with central nervous system-mediated weight loss properties studied thus far in randomized, placebo-controlled trials in persons with
BED
or BN have been efficacious for reducing binge eating behavior. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, marketed for
type 2 diabetes
and chronic weight management, produce weight loss in a dose dependent manner and have favorable psychiatric adverse event profiles. We hypothesize that GLP-1 receptor agonists will safely reduce binge eating behavior in individuals with
BED
or BN, including those with co-occurring psychiatric disorders, and propose that randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials of GLP-1 receptor agonists be conducted in persons with
BED
and those with BN. To support this hypothesis, we review studies of GLP-1 and GLP-1 receptor agonists in preclinical models of binge eating, studies of GLP-1 levels in individuals with
BED
or BN, and preliminary data of GLP-1 receptor agonists in humans with abnormal eating behavior.

BACKGROUND Little has been reported regarding the epidemiology of eating disorders (EDs) in
type 2 diabetes
(T2DM). We examined the Polish National Health Fund-NFZ database estimates of all medical visits from 2008 to 2017 to determine the trend and the epidemiology of EDs in T2DM patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The NFZ database were used. We defined the T2DM group diagnosed with both T2DM and EDs according to the ICD-10 codes. Demographic data were collected from the webpage of Statistics Poland (GUS). The annual prevalence of EDs was estimated according to the T2DM diagnosis status, and the age groups were stratified into 8 groups. RESULTS The prevalence of EDs in T2DM patients in the whole patient population with diagnosed T2DM ranged from 0.059% (in 2017) to 0.086% patients (in 2010). Differences in subcategories of EDs were noted. In the case of anorexia nervosa, a decreasing trend of coexistence with T2DM was noted. However, in the case of atypical anorexia nervosa, an increasing trend was observed. Both in the case of

bulimia nervosa
, an increasing trend of coexistence with T2DM was noted. As patients with T2DM age, the prevalence of EDs in T2DM decreased. CONCLUSIONS A relatively stable trend of prevalence of EDs in T2DM patients benefiting from state medical care indicated the need to develop effective screening methods and adequate procedures for therapeutic interventions with this group of patients using a multidisciplinary therapeutic team.

Ghrelin is a gastric hormone with multiple physiological functions, including the stimulation of food intake and adiposity. It is well established that circulating ghrelin levels are closely associated with feeding patterns, rising strongly before a meal and lowering upon food intake. However, the mechanisms underlying the modulation of ghrelin secretion are not fully understood. The purpose of this review is to discuss current knowledge on the circadian oscillation of circulating ghrelin levels, the neural mechanisms stimulating fasting ghrelin levels and peripheral mechanisms modulating postprandial ghrelin levels. Furthermore, the therapeutic potential of targeting the ghrelin pathway is discussed in the context of the treatment of various metabolic disorders, including obesity,
