Diabetic mastopathy is a recently described pathological entity. Little is known about this benign condition. It usually occurs in young patients with type 1 diabetes, or having an autoimmune disorders. Clinically, this mastopathy simulates a breast cancer. Graphic tests are not very informative. The diagnosis is histological. Through a case of diabetic mastopathy occurring in a patient with diabetes on insulin for 16 years and carries multiple degenerative complications, we recall the clinical, radiological and outcome of this disease.

Diabetic mastopathy is an unusual fibroinflammatory breast lesion that characteristically presents in premenopausal women with long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus.Patients present with clinically suspicious breast masses or axillary lymph nodes with imaging characteristics indistinguishable from malignancy. Fine needle aspiration is often inadequate and a core biopsy should be performed. Excisional biopsy is not necessary, and annual follow-up is recommended. Recognition of diabetic mastopathy should lead to better care of patients with breast nodules or axillary masses who are diabetic, avoiding surgery for this benign condition.

Diabetic mastopathy is an uncommon, benign disease of the breast that can occur in women with diabetes and clinically mimic breast cancer. We describe a patient with long-standing type 1 diabetes who presented with a palpable breast mass with negative imaging findings on mammography, ultrasonography, and breast MRI. Surgical biopsy and histopathology confirmed diabetic mastopathy. We use this case to highlight the recognition, radiographic features, pathology, and management of this benign breast condition and emphasize that, in diabetic patients, the differential diagnosis of a new breast mass should include diabetic mastopathy.

Diabetic mastopathy (DMP) is an uncommon collection of clinical, radiological, and histological features, classically described in premenopausal women with long-term insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. This entity can mimic breast carcinoma, but, in the appropriate clinical and imaging setting, the diagnosis can be made by core biopsy, avoiding unnecessary surgeries. We report the case of a 34-year-old female, with a 12-year history of type 1 diabetes, who presented with bilateral breast lumps. Mammography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging could not exclude the suspicion of malignancy, and a core biopsy was performed showing the typical histologic features of DMP. The literature is briefly reviewed.

Diabetic mastopathy is an uncommon, benign breast condition seen in type 1 and less frequently type 2 diabetic patients. It is characterized by a dense fibrous stromal proliferation of breast tissue, clinically mimicking cancerous masses, thus leading to worrisome investigations. Clinicians and pathologists must distinguish this benign condition from malignant causes because surgery may worsen the case as these lesions tend to recur more extensively at the site of resection. We present the case of a young woman with type 1 diabetes with typical diabetic mastopathy and summarize the literature to increase awareness of this troublesome but benign disorder.

Diabetic mastopathy represents an uncommon tumor-like proliferation of fibrous tissue of the breast that usually occurs in patients who suffered from type 1 diabetes mellitus for a long time. We report an uncommon case of diabetic mastopathy presenting in a type 2 non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus 61-year-old postmenopausal woman. Physical examination revealed a hard, low movable mass in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. Mammography and ultrasonography showed typical features of breast cancer. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (US-FNAC) was performed showing inflammatory infiltrate, suggesting excisional biopsy. Histological findings demonstrated typical diabetic mastopathy with fibrosis, histiocytic and limphocytic infiltration without evidence of malignancy.

Diabetic mastopathy is a benign condition of the breast that typically manifests in patients with diabetes mellitus. Lymphocytic mastopathy is the term used to describe this condition in patients without diabetes mellitus. Most patients undergo excisional biopsy, but the use of mastectomy, even in cases of diffuse, bilateral disease, is rarely reported. We present a 32-year-old female patient with type 1 diabetes and bilateral diabetic mastopathy. Because of pain, and concern for limitations in future cancer detection, she underwent bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomies with immediate direct-to-implant reconstruction. A systematic literature review was performed to examine the treatment options for this disease, particularly from a plastic surgery perspective. Sixty articles were reviewed which contained information regarding 313 patients. Of these patients, only 4 underwent mastectomy. This case is the first report of bilateral nipple sparing mastectomy and immediate implant reconstruction for a patient with bilateral, symptomatic diabetic mastopathy.
