Most patients with endocrine disorders present with diffuse non-scarring alopecia, such as anagen effluvium, telogen effluvium or androgenetic alopecia. Focal non-scarring alopecia, such as alopecia areata coexisting with autoimmune thyroiditis, is less frequent and scarring alopecia is a rare finding in patients with endocrine abnormalities. In some cases an endocrine disorder may be suspected based on dermatological findings during hair loss evaluation. Classic methods of hair evaluation include hair weighing, pull test, wash test, the trichogram, and histopathological examination. Cell therapy is one of the most promising future techniques in the medical arsenal for the repair of damaged or destroyed tissue. The diseases which cell therapy can target are very varied: Hormonal dysfunction, such as
diabetes
and
growth hormone deficiency
; neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Huntington's; and cardiovascular lesions, such as myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular ischaemia; as well as lesions in the cornea, skeletal muscle, skin, joints and bones etc. The objective of cell therapy is to restore the lost function rather than produce a new organ, which could cause duplicity and undesirable effects. Several resources of cells can be used to restore the damaged tissue, such as resident stem cells, multipotent adult progenitor cells or embryonic stem cells. Some cell therapies have been established and approved for clinical use, such as artificial skin derived from keratinocytes, derived from chondrocyte, cells of the corneal limbus or pancreatic islet transplantation. These therapies have had good results, although the scarcity of the starting material may represent a serious limitation. Other therapies under research, using pluripotent stem cells, have been modest so it is useful to review the protocols and try to improve the outcomes. Survivors of pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are known to be at risk of developing endocrine abnormalities, but occurrence of
diabetes mellitus
(DM) is a relatively recent observation. We present a 17.5-year-old girl with DM after high-dose radio- and chemotherapy followed by allogeneic HSCT for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, diagnosed when she was 10 years old. In the posttransplantation period, multiple acute and chronic complications occurred. Among them, we observed graft versus host disease requiring corticosteroid therapy, pancreatitis and some endocrine complications like primary hypothyroidism,

and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. DM with some components of metabolic syndrome-like insulin resistance, high arterial blood pressure and dyslipidemia developed during the first year after HSCT. autoantibodies. After the addition of metformin to continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion in the therapy of DM, an improvement in metabolic control was observed. In this review, we discuss the long-term efficacy and safety of GH treatment in adult patients with

) with emphasis on morbidity: fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke, fractures, fatal and nonfatal malignancies and recurrences, and
diabetes mellitus
. A positive effect of GH treatment on CVD and fracture risk could be concluded, but study design limitations have to be considered. Stroke and secondary brain tumours remained more prevalent. However, other contributing factors have to be taken into account. Regrowth and recurrences of (peri)pituitary tumours were not increased in patients with GH treatment compared to similar patients without GH treatment. All fatal and nonfatal malignancies were not more prevalent in GH-treated adults compared to the general population. However, follow-up time is still relatively short. The studies on
diabetes
are difficult to interpret, and more evidence is awaited. In clinical practice, a more individualized assessment seems appropriate, taking into consideration the underlying diagnosis of
GHD
, other treatment regimens, metabolic profile and the additional beneficial effects of GH set against the possible risks. Large and thoroughly conducted observational studies are needed and seem the only feasible way to inform the ongoing debate on health care costs, drug safety and clinical outcomes.

Growth monitoring of apparently healthy children aims at early detection of serious underlying disorders. However, existing growth-monitoring practices are mainly based on suboptimal methods, which can result in delayed diagnosis of severe diseases and inappropriate referrals. We did a systematic review to address two key and interconnected questions underlying growth monitoring: which conditions should be targeted, and how should abnormal growth be defined? We systematically searched for studies reporting algorithms for growth monitoring in children and studies comparing the performance of new WHO growth charts with that of other growth charts. Among 1556 identified citations, 69 met the inclusion criteria. Six target conditions have mainly been studied: Turner syndrome, coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis,

, renal tubular acidosis, and small for gestational age with no catch-up after 2 or 3 years. Seven algorithms to define abnormal growth have been proposed in the past 20 years, but their level of validation is low, and their overall sensitivities and specificities vary substantially; however, the Grote and Saari clinical decision rules seem the most promising. Two studies reported that WHO growth charts had poorer performance compared with other existing growth charts for early detection of target conditions. Available data suggest a large gap between the widespread implementation of growth monitoring and its level of evidence or the clinical implications of early detection of serious disorders in children. Further investigations are needed to standardise the practice of growth monitoring, with a consensus on a few priority target conditions and with internationally validated clinical decision rules to define abnormal growth, including the selection of appropriate growth charts.
