Frontotemporal lobar degeneration is currently associated with three syndromic variants. Disorders of speech and language figure prominently in two of the three variants, and are associated with left-sided frontotemporal atrophy. The detailed characterization of these syndromes contrasts with the relative paucity of information relating to frontotemporal lobar degeneration primarily affecting the right cerebral hemisphere. The objective of this study was to identify the clinical profile associated with
asymmetrical
, predominantly right-sided, temporal lobe atrophy. Twenty patients with predominant right temporal lobe atrophy were identified on the basis of blinded visual assessment of the MRI scans. The severity of right temporal lobe atrophy was quantified using volumetric analysis of the whole temporal lobes, the amygdala and the hippocampus. Profiles of cognitive function, behavioural and personality changes were obtained on each patient. The pattern of atrophy and the clinical features were compared with those observed in a group of patients with semantic dementia and predominant left-sided temporal lobe atrophy. The mean right temporal lobe volume in the right temporal lobe atrophy group was reduced by 37%, with the mean left temporal lobe volume reduced by 19%. There was marked atrophy of the right hippocampus and right amygdala, with mean volumes reduced by 41 and 51%, respectively (left hippocampus and amygdala volumes were reduced by 18 and 33%, respectively). The most prominent cognitive deficits were impairment of episodic memory and getting lost. Prosopagnosia was a symptom in right temporal lobe atrophy patients. These patients also exhibited a variety of behavioural symptoms including social disinhibition,
depression
and aggressive behaviour. Nearly all behavioural disorders were more prevalent in the right temporal lobe atrophy patient group than the semantic dementia group. Symptoms particular to the right temporal lobe atrophy patient group included hyper-religiosity, visual hallucinations and cross-modal sensory experiences. The combination of clinical features associated with predominant right temporal lobe atrophy differs significantly from those associated with the other syndromes associated with focal degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes and it is, therefore, proposed that this right temporal variant should be considered a separate syndromic variant of frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

Audiogenic kindling (AK) represents a model of naturally occurring epileptogenesis in which intensification of repeatedly induced audiogenic seizures results from propagation of epileptic activity from the brainstem to forebrain. Previously it has been shown that unilateral cortical spreading
depression
(SD) is a reliable earliest manifestation of mild AK produced by repetition of minimal audiogenic seizures (running) in Wistar rats. The unilateral triggering SD suggests the existence of asymmetry in the forebrain recruitment during the kindling and the present study examined whether epileptogenesis produced by this mild AK paradigm is a lateralized process. Twenty five running episodes were induced by brief sound stimulation in Wistar rats susceptible to audiogenic seizures. Behavioral and EEG correlates of AK development were assessed. Running behavior elicited by brief sound stimulation had an
asymmetrical
pattern with profound preference for one direction. Most rats expressing leftward running displayed full kindling development whereas the majority of rats with rightward running were resistant to AK. The EEG marker of AK, a cortical epileptiform discharge, was recorded only in rats with leftward running and the first discharge appeared in the left cortex. Cortical SD was recorded after repeated running seizures in all rats with reproducible audiogenic response irrespective of the running lateralization and propensity to kindling. Until the late kindling stages, SD was triggered unilaterally in the cortex ipsilateral to the running direction. These findings indicate intrinsically determined lateralization of epileptogenic process in the mild AK model and enhanced vulnerability of the left hemisphere to epileptogenesis.

The objective of this study was to assess the relation between strain pattern on electrocardiogram (ECG-strain) and echocardiographic indices of left ventricular (LV) structure and function in children with LV hypertrophy (LVH). ECG-strain is a marker of LVH and is associated with adverse cardiovascular prognosis in adults. The significance of ECG-strain and its relation to LV structure and function has not been studied in children. We retrospectively analyzed electrocardiograms (ECGs) and echocardiograms of 101 children enrolled in this study. Subjects were divided into three groups: group I (n = 21) comprised children with LVH confirmed by echocardiography (LVH(echo)) with ECG-strain pattern; group II (n = 54) comprised children with LVH(echo) without ECG-strain pattern; and group III (n = 26) comprised children without LVH (control group). T-wave opposite to the QRS axis in leads V5 and/or V6. LV structure and function was measured using conventional and tissue Doppler echocardiography. ECG-strain was associated with greater interventricular septal thickness, posterior wall thickness, and LV mass index (LVMI) compared with those without ECG-strain (P < 0.0001 for each variable). Concentric LVH was more common in those with ECG-strain (16 of 21 vs. 9 of 54 patients; P = < 0.0001). ECG-strain was associated with systolic, diastolic, and combined systolic-diastolic dysfunction in children with LVH(echo). Among children with LVH, ECG-strain is associated with higher LVMI, concentric pattern of LVH, and LV systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Whether this has similar adverse prognostic implications as it does in adults remains to be determined.

We investigated changes in behavior and brain glucose metabolism in a rat chronic mild stress (CMS) model of
depression
. The CMS model has been used to mimic
depression
in humans by using various chronic mild stressors in a 4 weeks period. In the present study, we have developed a combination of tests examining behavior (open field test) and hedonic measure (sucrose preference test) after exposure to CMS, and compared this to control non-stressed rats. We found that CMS induced behavioral changes, including decreased central and rearing activity, increased grooming and defecation, reduced body weight, and reduced relative sucrose intake. Moreover, our study suggests that CMS administered for 4 weeks activated left auditory cortex, while left piriform cortex, left inferior colliculus, septal nuclei and periaqueductal gray were deactivated. These changes in region of interest are left-right
asymmetrical
and lateralized in the left hemisphere. And activity deficits of
depression
are related with changes of brain activity in all brain regions showing significant changes by CMS in glucose metabolism. There are significant correlations for relative sucrose intake in left piriform cortex, left inferior colliculus and left auditory cortex, and for anxiety-related behavioral measures in septal nuclei and periaqueductal gray. There are lack of significant effects in the mean glucose metabolism of both hemispheres in hippocampus and amygdala induced by CMS possibly because of various reasons. Changes in glucose metabolism support the view that these significant brain regions are involved in chronic stress and depressive mood regulation. The results of this study might contribute to the awareness of changes in behavior and brain activity of
depression
induced by CMS.

Spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) has been demonstrated in various neural systems of many animals. It has been shown that STDP depends on the target and the location of the synapse and is dynamically regulated by the activity of adjacent synapses, the presence of postsynaptic calcium, presynaptic GABA inhibition or the action of neuromodulators. Recent experimental evidence has reported that the profile of STDP in the CA1 pyramidal neuron can be classified into two types depending on its dendritic location: (1) A symmetric STDP profile in the proximal to the soma dendrites, and (2) an asymmetric one in the distal dendrites. Bicuculline application revealed that GABA(A) is responsible for the symmetry of the STDP curve. We investigate via computer simulations how GABA(A) shapes the STDP profile in the CA1 pyramidal neuron dendrites when it is driven by excitatory spike pairs (doublets). The model constructed uses calcium as the postsynaptic signaling agent for STDP and is shown to be consistent with classical long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term
depression
(LTD) induced by several doublet stimulation paradigms in the absence of inhibition. Overall, simulation results provide computational evidence for the first time that the switch between the symmetrical and the

STDP operational modes is indeed due to GABA inhibition. Furthermore, gamma frequency inhibition and not theta one is responsible for the transition from asymmetry-to-symmetry. The resulted symmetrical STDP profile is centered at +10 ms with two distinct LTD tails at -10 and +40 ms. Finally, the asymmetry-to-symmetry transition is strongly dependent on the strength (conductance) of inhibition and its relative onset with respect to pre- and postsynaptic spike stimulation.

Mounting evidence suggests that individuals with fibromyalgia (FM) have impairments in general cognitive functions. However, few studies have explored the possibility of dissociation between verbal and visuospatial memory impairments in FM. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the
asymmetrical
impairment of cognitive functions between verbal and visuospatial memory and between short-term and long-term memory. Neuropsychological assessments were carried out on 23 female patients with FM and 24 healthy female controls. Verbal memory abilities were assessed using the Korean version of the Rey auditory verbal learning test (KAVLT) and digit span task, and visuospatial memory abilities were assessed using the Korean version of the Rey complex figure test (KCFT) and spatial span task. The analysis of covariance was used to assess group differences in performance on cognitive tests after controlling for
depression
. The two groups did not significantly differ in terms of age, years of education, or in their estimated verbal and performance IQ, but FM patients reported more severe depressive symptoms than did controls on the Beck
depression
inventory. Significant group differences were found in immediate and delayed recall on the KCFT (F (1,44) = 6.49, p = 0.014 and F (1,44) = 6.96, p = 0.011, respectively), whereas no difference was found in immediate and delayed recall on the KAVLT. In terms of short-term memory, neither the digit span task nor spatial span task showed any difference between groups, regardless of whether repetition was forward or backward. These findings suggest that spatial memory abilities may be more impaired than verbal memory abilities in patients with FM.

Although often considered as evolutionary dead ends, selfing taxa may make an important contribution to plant evolution through hybridization with related outcrossing lineages. However, there is a shortage of studies examining the evolutionary dynamics of hybridization between outcrossing and selfing taxa. On the basis of differential pollinator attractiveness, production and competitive ability of pollen, as well as levels of inbreeding
depression
, we predict that the early products of hybridization between outcrossing and selfing lineages will be F1s and first-generation backcrosses sired mainly by the outcrossing lineage, together with selfed F2s containing a limited genetic contribution from the outcrosser. These predictions were tested using amplified fragment length polymorphism and chloroplast markers to analyze the composition of a recent hybrid swarm between predominantly outcrossing Geum rivale and predominantly selfing Geum urbanum. In line with predictions, the hybrid swarm comprised both parental species together with F1s and first-generation backcrosses to G. rivale alone. Chloroplast data suggested that G. rivale was the pollen parent for both observed hybrid classes. However, there was no evidence for F2 individuals, despite the fact that the F1 was fully self-compatible and able to auto-pollinate. The pollen fertility of F1s was only 30% lower than that of the parental taxa, and was fully restored in backcross hybrids. Predicting future evolution in the hybrid swarm will require an understanding of the mating patterns within and among the mix of parental, F1 and backcross genotypes that are currently present. However, these results support the hypothesis that introgression is likely to be

from selfing to outcrossing lineages.

Different factors have been associated with changes in the regulation of the two major stress response systems of the human body, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
