Depression
among outpatients of three descriptively and geographically dissimilar family practice residency programs was studied. The Beck
Depression
Inventory, the Popoff Index of
Depression
, and the Multiscore
Depression
Inventory (MDI) were compared. Reliabilities of all three instruments were high, as were correlations among the instruments. The only significant differences among the three populations were on the social introversion and sad mood subscales of the MDI. Regression analyses were then performed to compute equivalent scores on the Beck
Depression
Inventory
short form
from the MDI and Popoff instruments. This allowed approximate conversion of scores to the four levels of severity of
depression
described by Beck and Beck. This study provides the first extensive normative data for family practice on these measures, thus providing family physicians with a comparison group appropriate for a family practice rather than a psychiatric population.

Platelet monoamine oxidase activity and plasma trace acid levels in 29 patients classified as agoraphobics was estimated. MAO activity towards p-tyramine and beta-phenylethylamine was found to be significantly higher in agoraphobics than in non-agoraphobic depressed patients and healthy controls. In addition plasma p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid levels were low in both agoraphobic and depressed patient groups. All patients were also assessed by Spielberger State Anxiety and the
short form
of the Beck
Depression
Inventory scales. No significant correlations could be found between platelet MAO activity or plasma trace acid levels and the psychological scores.

The Beck
Depression
Inventory (BDI), the Derogatis Symptom Check List (SCL-90) and a
short form
of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-168) were administered to 28 spinal cord injury (SCI) patients on admission to an inpatient rehabilitation program. Of the several psychologic measures derived from this battery of tests, measures of distress/
depression
predicted both duration of inpatient rehabilitation and performance of self-care of bladder and skin at discharge. Based on follow-up an average of 7 months post-discharge, the best predictor of future self-care behavior seems to be past self-care behavior, augmented by knowledge of personality tendencies. Results emphasize the importance of minimizing patient distress during SCI inpatient rehabilitation and suggest that, for some patients, psychologic intervention following discharge directed at modifying certain personality features may facilitate continued performance of critical self-care behaviors.

A 60-item
short form
of the MMPI with very high content validity and items that appear on both the MMPI and MMPI-2 was developed and named the MMPI-TRI. It contains three 20-item scales--the Subjective Distress, Acting-Out, and Psychosis scales. These three scales have excellent internal consistency and sufficient independence from each other. An anxiety and
depression
group of patients, prison inmate group, and a schizophrenic and other psychotic group had the highest mean scores on Subjective Distress, Acting-Out, and Psychosis, respectively. Correlations with the 13 regular scales of the MMPI and MMPI-2, their content and supplementary scales, and four other psychometric instruments provided very strong evidence for validity. Norms are provided.

It is shown how information on the direction of causation between variables may be obtained from a cross-sectional study of pairs of relatives. This method is applied to the study of the relationship between ratings of parents' rearing style and
depression
in their offspring. Adult female twins ascertained from a population-based registry in Viroffia completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies--
Depression
Scale (CESD) and a 7-item
short form
of the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) about each of their parents. Two dimensions of parental behavior, overprotectiveness and coldness, were analyzed jointly with
depression
data in both genetic factor and directional genetic models. Models that specify ratings of parents as a cause of
depression
in the offspring fit the data significantly better than models that specify
depression
as a cause of ratings of parents. A still better fit is obtained with models that specify common genetic variance to
depression
and ratings, though causal models with error variance perform almost as well. In general, ratings of fathers show more genetic and less shared environmental variance than ratings of mothers, which might arise from more consistent treatment of offspring by mothers than by fathers. No effect of children eliciting parental rearing style was detected with these data. The relative merits of instrumental variable, longitudinal, and family approaches to testing causal models are discussed.

Psychiatric diseases are very common among elderly people.
Depressions
rank before dementias in this age group. 2-2.5 million people aged over 65 years are suffering from symptoms of
depression
in Germany. Patients with Mayor
Depression
Disease (MDD) have a poor prognosis. MDD should therefore be recognized and treated in community dwelling elderly, in nursing homes and in hospitals. Underdiagnosis of MDD is well documented in the medical literature. Only a quarter of patients with a MDD are detected. By a short screening test for
depression
such as the Geriatric
Depression
Scale (GDS) depressed patients can be identified. With a sensitivity and specificity of about 70%. The time needed to perform the
short form
of the GDS is only 5-7 min. The GDS is an important part of many assessment programs in England and USA. It is also recommended in Germany by the "Geriatric Assessment" working group.

To investigate the association between
depression
and vision, 100 cataract operation patients (25 were men and 75 women) aged 71 to 76 years were studied. One day before the operation and 3 mo. after, the patients'
depression
was tested with the
short form
of the Beck
Depression
Inventory and their personalities with Mini-Mult MMPI. The cataract operation restored visual acuity sufficient for reading (minimum E-test value 0.40) to 79% of the subjects. The analysis indicated that their
depression
was significantly correlated with vision only after the cataract operation.
Depression
increased with weakened visual acuity and diminished with improved visual acuity. Part of the postoperation
depression
was, however, associated with glaucoma and serious somatic diseases (asthma, cerebrovascular disorders, and heart diseases).

The purpose of the present study was to compare the Satz-Mogel (S-M)
short form
of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Revised (WAIS-R) with the full-scale WAIS-R to establish its utility in the assessment of intellectual functioning in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). PD patients and elderly control subjects were administered a neuropsychological test battery that included the complete WAIS-R or the S-M. Results indicated that the S-M was a reliable measure of IQ. The PD subjects' Verbal, Performance, and Full-Scale IQ scores were inferior to that of controls, regardless of test form. Adjustments for
depression
and age did not alter these results. PD patients with more severe disease scored lower on some visual-spatial measures. Verbal decrements among PD patients may relate to problems in verbal fluency, categorical thinking, and impaired retrieval of verbal material. PD patients may experience patterns of subtle cognitive changes that include deterioration of some specific abilities as the disease progresses.

We derived and tested a
short form
of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies
Depression
Scale (CES-D) for reliability and validity among a sample of well older adults in a large Health Maintenance Organization. The 10-item screening questionnaire, the CESD-10, showed good predictive accuracy when compared to the full-length 20-item version of the CES-D (kappa = .97, P < .001). Cutoff scores for depressive symptoms were > or = 16 for the full-length questionnaire and > or = 10 for the 10-item version. We discuss other potential cutoff values. The CESD-10 showed an expected positive correlation with poorer health status scores (r = .37) and a strong negative correlation with positive affect (r = -.63). Retest correlations for the CESD-10 were comparable to those in other studies (r = .71). We administered the CESD-10 again after 12 months, and scores were stable with strong correlation of r = .59.

The aim of this study was to determine, in a population of medical inpatients, the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of two self-rating
depression
scales, and of the physicians' judgment, compared to a structured interview derived from the Composite Interview Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) designed to assess the diagnosis of major depressive episodes. The setting of the study was a general internal medicine inpatient ward of a French university hospital. Patients between 15 and 75 were asked to fill, within the first week of their hospitalization, two self-rating
depression
scales: the Beck
Depression
Inventory -
short form
(BDI-short form), a 13-item scale with established reliability and validity; and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-
Depression
Scale (CES-D), a 20-item scale designed for epidemiological use in the general population, recently translated in French. Patients were then interviewed by a psychologist, blind to the results of the self-rating scales, using a slightly simplified version of the
depression
section of the CIDI. The ward physicians' recognition of
depression
was assessed six months later by a careful chart review, conducted by an investigator blind to the results of
depression
scales and structured interview. One hundred consecutive patients were studied: 63% were women, mean age was 53.6 +/- 16.5 years. According to the results of the CIDI, the prevalence of current major depression was 29.7%, and the lifetime prevalence of major depression was 59.8%. The correlation between BDI-
short form
and CES-D was +0.81. BDI-
short form
proved to have a slightly better acceptability than the CES-D.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
