Both major depression and depressive symptoms are associated with a high rate of nicotine dependence, and a history of major depression has an adverse impact on smoking cessation. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether continuous ingestion of nicotine affects indices of depressive behavior in the rat. We compared cholinergic- and serotonergic-hypersensitive Flinders Sensitive Line rats (FSL), a genetic animal model of
depression
, with their control counterparts, Flinders Resistant Line rats (FRL). Female rats of both lines were allowed access to a solution of nicotine bitartrate (100 microg/mL) in
tap
water for 14 days. Subsequent behavioral testing revealed striking effects of continuous ingestion of nicotine on depressive-like behavior of both lines. FSL and FRL rats that ingested nicotine for 14 days displayed less immobility in the 10-min forced-swim test (an index of depressive-like behavior) relative to the animals of both lines that were not exposed to nicotine or exposed to nicotine for shorter periods of time. This finding indicates that ingested nicotine has antidepressant properties that are independent of the genetic difference between FSL and FRL female rats. Animal studies on nicotine ingestion and withdrawal may become an important source of insights into the comorbidity of
depression
and nicotine self-administration.

Alcoholism is a very important cause of congestive cardiomyopathy in man. The aim of this study was to examine a short-term effect of ethanol in rat cardiac muscle, using histologic, morphometric and biochemical methods. Experiments were carried out in Wistar male albino rats, divided into two groups: the control group consisting of eight animals receiving

water, and the experimental group comprising eight animals received ethyl alcohol for ten days, in a single daily dose of 3 g ethanol/kg body weight, per os, using esophageal intubation. The mean volume weighted nuclear volume of cardiac myocytes was estimated by point sampled intercept method, by objective x 100. The mean cubed nuclear intercept length was multiplied by pi and divided by 3. For biochemical analysis, a 10% water tissue homogenate from the left ventricle was made. In the experimental group, the mean volume-weighted nuclear volume (15.08 +/- 5.20 microm3) was significantly lower than in the control group (51.32 +/- 7.83 microm3) (p < 0.001). The treatment of experimental animals with ethanol caused significant increase of aldolase (p < 0.0001) and aspartate transaminase (p < 0.05) activity in the rat cardiac tissue; at the same time, the enzyme activity of creatine phosphokinase, alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase were not changed in the experimental group compared to the control values. The amount of the glucose in the cardiac muscle was greater in the experimental group compared to the control animals. Our results suggest that there is

of cardiomyocyte nuclei in experimental animals treated with ethanol. Alcohol intake results in the loss of Krebs cycle enzymes and as a consequence there is greater utilization of fatty acids for energy production.

Scale); and (c) staff views of patient perceptions of the importance of caring behaviors. The study included 21 matched patient-staff dyads. Three questionnaire versions of the Caring Assessment Instrument were used to

patient (CARE-P) and staff (CARE-S) perceptions, and staff views of patient perceptions (CARE-SP). There were no correlations between patient and staff perceptions of the importance of caring behaviors, patient health, quality of life, or greatest health-related concern. However, staff views of patient perceptions about the importance of caring behaviors were strongly correlated with their own perceptions. Staff ratings of the importance of caring behaviors were not related to patient anxiety,
depression
, health, and/or quality of life. Patient
depression
was negatively correlated with three CARE-Q subscales. The results indicate that staff are not successful in judging the importance of caring behaviors, health, quality of life, and greatest health-related concern for individual patients. The major implication is that staff must be open to patient perceptions of what caring behaviors are important, and must validate their own perceptions of patient needs and concerns.

Clinical
depression
is often characterized by a loss of interest or pleasure in formerly enjoyable activities. Analogs of anhedonia are established in rats, but the generality of this phenomenon to other species is unknown. Maternally-deprived rhesus macaques show a wide range of behavioral abnormalities that are reversed by chronic antidepressant treatment. We tested consumption by maternally deprived versus control macaques of sweetened (seven sucrose concentrations) or bitter water (four quinine concentrations) versus plain water to evaluate a non-human primate model of
depression
for signs of anhedonia. All monkeys consumed more sweetened than
tap
water, but maternally-deprived monkeys had a diminished preference for sweetened water than did controls. However, maternally deprived animals consumed more bitter water than did controls. Baseline fluid consumption did not differ. The data suggest that 'anhedonia' in animal models may be secondary to a generally attenuated responsiveness to stimuli, rather than a unitary reduction in responsiveness to the appetitive properties of stimuli. We conclude that maternally-deprived rhesus monkeys do not display gustatory signs of anhedonia, but rather of insensitivity to gustatory stimuli.

The aims were (1) to determine when in human postnatal development Group Ia reciprocal and Renshaw inhibition can be demonstrated; (2) to explore the relationship between the expression reciprocal inhibition and the disappearance of Group Ia excitatory reflexes between agonist and antagonist muscles. Studies were performed on 99 subjects, aged 1 day to 31 years, of whom 53 were neonates. A longitudinal study was also performed on 29 subjects recruited at birth and studied 3 monthly until 12 months of age. Reciprocal inhibitory and excitatory reflexes were recorded in the surface EMG of contracting biceps brachii (Bi), evoked by taps applied to the tendon of triceps brachii (Tri). Reciprocal excitatory reflexes were recorded in all but one neonate. Reciprocal inhibition was observed in 25% of neonates; evidence is provided that it was likely to have been masked by low threshold reciprocal excitation in the remaining neonates. Reciprocal inhibition was demonstrated in all subjects after 9 months of age. In four neonates there was

of inhibition of Bi during co-contraction of Bi and Tri implying that Group Ia interneurones may be under segmental and suprasegmental control at birth. The effects of conscious sedation by propofol on respiration were studied in 28 patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy under spinal anesthesia. The patients were randomly assigned to receive conscious sedation by propofol (Group P, n = 20) or no sedation (Group C, n = 8). After a satisfactory level of analgesia had been achieved, a loading dose of propofol, 0.2 mg.kg-1 was administered every minute in Group P until patients exhibited spontaneous eye closure or nystagmus. Thereafter, the infusion rates were adjusted to maintain conscious sedation. Respiratory rate, SpO2 and nasal PETCO2 were measured every minute during the initial 30 minutes and subsequently at 5-min intervals. The patients were questioned on the 1st postoperative day concerning intraoperative recall and the level of satisfaction. The mean loading dose of propofol was 0.4 mg.kg-1 and the mean mainteinance rate was 1.7 +/- 0.5 mg.kg-1.h-1. Compared with Group C, the respiratory

Although research has consistently demonstrated that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) impairs health-related quality of life (HRQL), little agreement has been evidenced regarding the factors identified as contributing to impaired HRQL. The aim was to study such factors using well established generic and specific HRQL instruments. The patients (n=68) were stratified by forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) to represent a wide range of disease severity. Although correlations between FEV1 versus SGRQ total and SIP overall scores (r=-0.42 and -0.32) were stronger than previously reported, multiple regression analyses showed that lung function contributed little to the variance when dyspnoea-related limitation,

Acid generation and elimination processes were compared with total base (bicarbonate plus metabolizable anions) turnover in 18 anuric patients undergoing post-dilutional haemofiltration. The study was conducted during the second haemodialysis session of the week by means of a whole-body base balance technique. The results showed that the mean rates of base loss and base gain during dialysis did not differ (i.e. the dialysis base balance approximated to zero). The concurrent mean rate of intestinal base absorption was 66+/-26 mmol/2 days, as calculated from the whole-body balance of the various inorganic cation and anion differences in a metabolic steady state. This level of intestinal base absorption would be capable of neutralizing the 59+/-21 mmol of H(+) ions/2 days that is contributed by sulphuric acid, which is the most important endogenous acid produced in anuric patients. In spite of the fact that intestinal base supply was adequate to neutralize endogenous acid production completely, our patients presented with pre-dialysis non-carbonic acidosis. The
depression
of plasma bicarbonate levels could not, however, be explained by increased concentrations of the anion gap and organic acids, which were within normal limits both before and after dialysis. We suggest as an alternative hypothesis that this pre-dialysis acidosis may represent an isotonic dilution acidosis that is induced by the ingestion of base-free

Clinical and epidemiological studies have found an association between aversive experiences early in life and an increased risk for
depression
, anxiety and substance abuse. In order to elucidate the mechanisms by which adverse life events are translated into behavioral and psychological abnormalities, we used a rat model to study the impact of chronic injection and 24 h maternal deprivation on the developing rat brain. Specifically, we investigated the regulation of molecules related to the 5-HT (5-HT) system and studied the effect of desipramine administration on animals that were maternally deprived (DEP) on day 13 of life compared with non-deprived animals. We found that maternal deprivation caused an enhanced corticosterone response to an acute stress. Maternally deprived animals also showed a decrease in corticosteroid receptors and an increase in 5-HT 1A and 1B receptors restricted to the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Desipramine prevented the maternal deprivation induced up-regulation of the 5-HT 1B receptor and the enhanced adrenocortical response observed in these animals. Interestingly, non-deprived animals receiving chronic injections showed a decrease in hippocampal 5-HT1B receptor mRNA. At 80 days of age, a group of animals that were treated as infants were given the option of drinking from two identical water bottles, one bottle contained

water, while the second contained ethanol at increasing concentrations. Animals that received chronic injections during the newborn period consumed more alcohol than those that were not injected. On the other hand, maternal deprivation did not have an impact on alcohol consumption. Alcohol preference has implications to the organism since studies of drug self-administration in laboratory animals have shown that ethanol ingestion is positively related to the use of other drugs, principally opioids and psychostimulants. Our findings suggest that the quality and/or chronicity of early life stressors can influence the neurobiological substrates that may trigger and/or predispose individuals to substance abuse in adulthood.
