scores, there was a significant reduction in the score and a significant increase in serum

levels after 8 weeks of micronutrient supplementation. Placebo group scores were unchanged. This small study concluded that

A method has been developed for the determination of bismuth by generation of its gaseous hydride and introduction of the hydride into a premixed argon (entrained air)-hydrogen flame, the atomic-fluorescence lines from which are all detected by use of a non-dispersive system. The detection limit is 5 pg/ml, or 0.1 ng of bismuth, but the reagent blank found in a 20-ml sample volume was approximately 2 ng of bismuth. Analytical working curves obtained by measuring peak-heights and integrated peak-areas of the signals are linear over a range of about four orders of magnitude from the detection limit. Perchloric, phosphoric and sulphuric acids up to 2.0M concentration give no interference, but nitric acid gives slight

Selenium
-binding protein (SEBP) is believed to play crucial role in controlling the oxidation/reduction in the physiological processes. In this study, the cDNA of selenium-binding protein from abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino (HdhSEBP) was cloned by homology cloning and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) technique. The full length of HdhSEBP cDNA was 2071 bp, consisting of a 5' untranslated region (UTR) of 55 bp, a 3' UTR of 522 bp, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 1494 bp. The deduced protein has 497 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular mass of 55.6 kDa and a predicted isoelectric point of 5.47. BLAST analysis reveals that HdhSEBP shares high identities with other known SEBPs from mammal, bird, fish and mollusk, etc. The mRNA expression patterns of HdhSEBP in hepatopancreas and haemocytes were measured by real-time PCR in abalone fed with nine different diets containing graded levels of
selenium
(0, 1 and 50 mg kg(-1)), iron (0, 65 and 1300 mg kg(-1)) and zinc (0, 35 and 700 mg kg(-1)) for 20 weeks, respectively. The results showed that the expression of the HdhSEBP mRNA increased and reached the maximum at optimal dietary

(Gn-Se) combination on chemosensitivity and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) expression levels in PC3 (hormone-independent) and LNCaP (hormone-dependent) prostate cancer cells. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium staining and ATP bioassay showed that genistein,
selenium
, and Gn-Se combination significantly inhibited growth of LNCaP and PC3 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner, independent of hormonal status, and with no significant differences in chemosensitivity between LNCaP and PC3. Gn-Se combination induced significantly the greatest growth inhibition in both cell lines. Growth inhibition was through apoptosis induction. The treatment-induced apoptotic cascades are caspase-dependent, with evidence of an alternative non-caspase pathway(s). Treatment also induced a dose- and time-dependent decrease in MMP-2 expression levels in PC3 and LNCaP with no significant differences between the two cells. Gn-Se combination induced the greatest

in MMP-2. Overall, none of the treatment modalities had any significant inhibitory effect in normal prostate epithelial cells. The high suicide rates in Japan and several reports of inverse associations of suicide rates with the levels of lithium (Li) in drinking water prompted determinations of Li along with other elements in samples of scalp hair of 100 male and 100 female residents of Tokyo Prefecture. In more than half of the samples of both genders, Li levels were below the instrumental detection limit or below or the lower limit of the laboratory reference ranges. Among other elements, the concentrations namely of cobalt were also frequently below the laboratory reference range, suggesting that low circulating levels of vitamin B(12) were common in this study population. As vitamin B(12) deficiency is associated with

and other psychiatric conditions, and there is evidence of interactions between Li and vitamin B(12), Li deficiency as well as suboptimal vitamin B(12) status must be considered as potential suicide risk factors. Although the analytical results suggested that the Se status of the subjects was generally adequate, as seafood was a major dietary source of Se, much of it was actually sequestered by mercury and only a fraction was bio-available. In addition, the hair samples were found to contain not insignificant levels of As, Cd, Ni, and Pb, arising from the adventitious presence of these elements in foods and the environment. As these elements also interact with Se in vivo and are known to adversely affect mood and behavior, in investigational studies, subjects at risk need to be evaluated also with respect to these elements.

is used by people in the prevention and/or treatment of different disorders including cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, stroke, atherosclerosis, cancer susceptibility and treatment, HIV, AIDS, neuronal diseases such as Alzheimer or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, pancreatitis,

, and diabetes amongst others. Several mechanisms have been suggested to mediate the biological effects of Se and these include antioxidant defence systems, synthesis and stability of metabolites that act as intermediates implicated in diverse selenoproteins expression pathways oxidative metabolism, immune system modulation, DNA intercalators, kinase regulation, enzymatic cofactor, and gene expression. A number of clinical trials in recent years have provided convincing evidence of the central role of this element, either alone or in combination with other micronutrients or antioxidants, in the prevention and treatment of multiple diseases.
