Lead is a major heavy-metal contaminant in the environment that has various anthropogenic and natural sources. To study the phytotoxic effects of Pb on the popular vegetable Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis Rupr.) via depression of nitrogen assimilation, pot culture experiments with three concentrations of treatment with Pb (0, 4, and 8 mmol/kg dry soil) were carried out. Our results demonstrated adverse effects of Pb on nitrogen assimilation and plant growth. The addition of Pb in the soil resulted in elevated accumulation of Pb in the shoots of the plants: Pb concentrations of 14.3, 202.3, and 418.2 mg/kg (DW) in the shoots were detected with the 0, 4, and 8 mmol/kg treatments, respectively. Compared to the control, Pb exposure (4 and 8 mmol/kg) significantly decreased shoot nitrate content (71% and 80% of the control), nitrate reductase activity (104% and 49% of the control), and free amino acid content (81% and 82% of the control), indicating decreased nitrogen assimilation in the plants. The effect of Pb also was shown by the progressive decline in shoot biomass with increasing Pb concentration in plant shoots and in the soil. However, at the treatment levels used in this study, lead did not induce visible toxic symptoms. The lowest-concentration Pb treatment (4 mmol/kg) stimulated chlorophyll b content but did not influence chlorophyll a content. The results suggested that the toxicity of Pb to the plants occurred at least partly via depression of nitrogen assimilation.

To elucidate the deleterious effects of excess lead on radish (Raphanus sativus) cv. Jaunpuri plants were grown in refined sand in complete nutrient solution for 30 days. On the 31st day lead nitrate was superimposed at 0.1 and 0.5mM to radish for 65 days. A set of plants in complete nutrient solution was maintained as control for the same period without lead. Excess Pb at 0.5mM showed growth depression with interveinal chlorosis on young leaves at apex. Excess Pb reduced the fresh and dry weight pronouncedly at d 65. Lead accumulation reduced the concentration of chlorophyll, iron, sulphur (in tops), Hill reaction activity and catalase activity whereas increased the concentration of phosphorus, sulphur (in roots) and activity of peroxidase, acid phosphatase and ribonuclease in leaves of radish.

Lead (Pb) seems to be involved in the etiology of psychological pathologies. This study investigated the effects of subchronic Pb exposure from weaning to adulthood on anxiety, depression and aggressiveness in male and female Swiss mice. Moreover, the reversibility of the effects was evaluated retesting the animals 30 days after the end of exposure. Swiss male and female mice (21 days) were exposed to 0, 50, 100 or 500 ppm of Pb, as Pb acetate, in drinking water for 70 days and were submitted to the forced swimming, tail suspension, elevated plus-maze or intruder-resident tests. Pb exposure to 50 and 500 ppm induced anti-depressant-like effect in both males and females, whereas exposure to 500 ppm induced anxiogenic effect only in males. Interruption of exposure was able to reverse the behavioral alterations in females, but not in males exposed to the highest concentration (500 ppm). Our results suggest that behavioral effects induced by subchronic exposure to Pb from weaning to adulthood and their reversion are concentration and gender dependent.

Lead (Pb) intoxication in horses is usually a chronic phenomenon with clinical signs associated with central nervous dysfunction. This report gives details of a case of acute Pb intoxication in a 9-year-old American Saddlebred mare with severe, progressive and ultimately fatal neurological deterioration. During the 4 days of hospitalisation, clinical signs progressed from intermittent headshaking and depression to severe, continuous, uncontrollable manic behaviour. At autopsy, three grey-coloured, hard metal particles were present in the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently found to contain 2614 ppm Pb. Lead concentrations in the brain, liver, stomach and kidney were 29, 4, 6 and 2 ppm wet weight, respectively.

The phytotoxicity and antioxidative adaptations of lead (Pb) accumulating ecotype (AE) and non-accumulating ecotype (NAE) of Sedum alfredii Hance were investigated under different Pb treatments involving 0, 0.02 mmol/L Pb, 0.1 mmol/L Pb and 0.1 mmol/L Pb/0.1 mmol/L ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for 6 days. With the increasing Pb level, the Pb concentration in the shoots of AE plants enhanced accordingly, and EDTA supply helped 51% of Pb translocation to shoots of AE compared with those treated with 0.1 mmol/L Pb alone. Moreover, the presence of EDTA alleviated Pb phytotoxicity through changes in plant biomass, root morphology and chlorophyll contents. Lead toxicity induced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation and lipid peroxidation in both ecotypes of S. alfredii. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (G-POD), ascorbate peroxidase, and dehydroascorbate reductase elevated in both leaves and roots of AE as well as in leaves of NAE with the increasing Pb levels, but SOD and G-POD declined in roots of NAE. Enhancement in glutathione reductase activity was only detected in roots of NAE while a depression in catalase activity was recorded in the leaves of NAE. A significant enhancement in glutathione and ascorbic acid (AsA)levels occurred in both ecotypes exposed to Pb and Pb/EDTA treatment compared with the control, however, the differences between these two treatments were insignificant. The dehydroascorbate (DHA) contents in roots of both ecotypes were 1.41 to 11.22-fold higher than those in leaves, whereas the ratios of AsA to DHA (1.38 to 6.84) in leaves altering more to the reduced AsA form were much higher than those in roots. These results suggested that antioxidative enzymes and antioxidants play an important role in counteracting Pb stress in S. alfredii.

The cholinergic system is believed to be associated with learning and memory functions. Lead (Pb2+) is a well-known neurotoxic metal that causes irreversible damage to the central nervous system (CNS). To investigate whether Pb2+ interferes with cholinergic modulation, we examined the effects of carbachol (CCh), a muscarinic cholinergic agonist, on synaptic transmission and plasticity in the CA1 area of the hippocampus of developmentally Pb2+-exposed rats. The results showed that: (1) In both control and Pb2+-exposed rats, 0.1 microM CCh significantly enhanced tetanus-induced long-term potentiation (LTP), while 5 microM CCh induced a reversible depression of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs). However, both the enhancement of LTP and depression of fEPSPs were significantly smaller in Pb2+-exposed rats than in controls, suggesting that the extent of the effect of CCh on the cholinergic system was depressed by Pb2+. (2) In Pb2+-exposed rats, the enhancement of LTP induced by 0.1 microM CCh was attenuated by pirenzepine, a M1AChR antagonist, but was not affected by methoctramine tetrahydrochloride (M-105), a M2/4AChR antagonist. The depression of fEPSPs induced by 5 microM CCh was reduced by either pirenzepine or M-105. (3) Furthermore, paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) was not affected by 0.1 microM CCh in control and Pb2+-exposed rats but was increased by 5 microM CCh in either group; the increase in PPF was less pronounced in Pb2+-treated when compared to control rats. These results suggested that cholinergic modulation could be impaired by Pb2+, and this kind of impairment might occur via different mAChR subtypes. Our study delineated the effects of Pb2+ on muscarinic modulation, and this might be one of the underlying mechanisms by which Pb2+ impairs learning and memory.

The main purpose of this study was to describe electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in canine babesiosis, and to relate these to clinical severity, outcome and cardiac pathology. Four groups of dogs with babesiosis were studied: mild to moderate anemia, severe anemia, concurrent autoagglutination and concurrent complications. Lead II ECG was recorded at admission for 1 minute in all dogs (121). A six lead ECG was recorded in 88 dogs. Full necropsy was performed on 16 dogs (5 died on arrival, 11 had ECG recording). The following ECG changes were recorded in relatively high prevalence: sinoatrial blocks or sinus arrest (7%), ventricular premature complexes (7%), low R-amplitude (23%), prominent Q (13%), axis deviations (40%), prolonged QRS (32%), ST depression and coving (28%), large T (42%), and notched R (28%). Differences between groups were minor. There was a significantly higher prevalence of sinus bradycardia and irregular rhythm in the non-survivors. Gross pathological changes were pericardial effusion and hemorrhages. Histological changes were hemorrhages, necrosis, inflammation and fibrin microthrombi. The only correlation between pathology and ECG was low R-amplitude and pericardial effusion. The ECG changes were similar to the pattern described for myocarditis and myocardial ischemia, and together with the histopathological findings indicated that the heart suffers from the same pathological processes described in other organs in canine babesiosis, namely inflammation and hypoxia. As the clinical application of the ECG changes found in this study was limited, cardiovascular assessment should be based on functional monitoring rather than ECG.

Obesity is a health disparity related to environmental, social, and physical health issues, including ethnicity, education, and gender. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among obesity, age, education, and socioeconomic status and the relationship between obesity and depression among African-American women living in Omaha, Nebraska. A convenience sample of 378 African-American women completed the African-American Female Health Survey, which included the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Body mass index (BMI) was used to measure obesity. Results indicated that 87% of the women were overweight; mean BMI was 32.78 with high cardiovascular disease risks. There was a statistically significant and positive relationship between depression and BMI (r = .201, p < .01). Occupational therapists may provide primary, secondary, and tertiary intervention through culturally relevant and meaningful health education programs.

Changing axis deviation has been reported also during atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Changing axis deviation has been also reported during acute myocardial infarction associated with atrial fibrillation too or at the end of atrial fibrillation during acute myocardial infarction. Patients with unstable angina have a higher incidence of left main coronary artery (LMCA) and proximal left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery disease compared to patients with stable angina pectoris. In 1982, Wellens and colleagues described two electrocardiographic patterns that were predictive of critical narrowing of the proximal LAD artery, and were subsequently termed Wellens' syndrome. The criteria were: a) prior history of chest pain, b) little or no cardiac enzyme elevation, c) no pathologic precordial ST segment elevation, d) no loss of precordial R waves, and e) biphasic T waves in leads V2 and V3, or asymmetric, often deeply inverted T waves in leads V2 and V3. The ECG changes are best recognized outside the episode of anginal pain. Lead aVR and lead v1 ST segment elevation, during chest pain, has been reported in patients with LMCA disease with ST segment depression in leads V3, V4 and V5 (with maximal depression in V4).We present a case of changing axis deviation in a 37-year-old Italian man with a LAD coronary artery subocclusion associated with a LMCA subocclusion. This case focuses attention on the importance of the recognition of the patterns suspected for LAD coronary artery disease or for LMCA disease.

Exercise-induced ST-segment elevation in lead aVR accompanied by ST-segment elevation in lead V1 might be a specific finding of left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenosis. Lead aVR and lead v1 ST segment elevation has been reported, during an attack of chest pain, in patients with LMCA disease with ST segment depression in leads V3, V4 and V5 (with maximal depression in V4). ST-segment elevation in lead aVR in patients with angina at rest can be related to transmural ischemia of the basal part of the interventricular septum, frequently due to LMCA or multivessel coronary disease too. 3-vessel coronary artery disease (CAD) and LMCA disease show a frequent combination of leads with abnormal ST segments during chest pain with ST-segment depression in leads I II V4-V6, and ST-segment elevation in lead aVR. When ST-segment status in lead aVR combines with troponin T, ST-segment elevation in lead aVR and positive troponin T on admission are useful predictors of LMCA or 3-vessel CAD. We present a case of acute myocardial infarction with significant left main coronary artery stenosis, significant 3-vessel coronary artery disease and elevated troponin I at admission in an 83-year-old Italian woman. Also this case focuses attention on the importance of the recognition of the patterns suspected for LMCA and/or 3-vessel coronary disease.
