The Beck
Depression
Inventory (BDI) is a widely used self-report measure for
depression
. This study has two objectives: (a) to revise, develop, and adapt a Spanish language BDI (BDI-S) that takes the criteria for the diagnosis of major depression according to the DSM-IV into consideration; and (b) to evaluate the psychometric properties (internal reliability and construct validity) of the revised version of the BDI (BDI-S). A sample of 351 undergraduate students at the University of Puerto Rico participated in this study. The participants who agreed to participate in the study and signed the consent form completed self-report measures related to
depression
(BDI-S, CES-D, and LCSd-7), dysfunctional cognition (
DAS
-A and IBT), stressful life events (LES), and social support (CAS). The coefficient of internal consistency obtained for the 22 BDI-S items was.88. The correlation coefficients between the BDI-S and instruments that measured other constructs (not
depression
) were lower than the correlation coefficients between instruments that measured the same constructs. Factor analysis revealed that the factor loading for the BDI-S was congruent with dimensions of
depression
reported in the literature. These results generally support the internal consistency and the construct validity of the BDI-S.

The Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale Form A (DAS-A), a self-report measure of
depression
-related attitudes, has been used in numerous
depression
studies. The
DAS
-A has a two-factor structure that has been found consistently with college student samples and clinically depressed samples of middle-aged adults, but it has not been validated with older adults. The present study examined the factor structure with a sample of 100 depressed older adults (average age = 68.19; average initial Hamilton Rating Scale for
Depression
[HRSD] score = 16.72) who participated in a
depression
treatment study. Results indicated the factor structure established with younger adults was not replicated with older adults. Furthermore, the factor structure with older adults was uncertain: a single factor structure, two-factor structure, and three-factor structure were essentially of equal validity. The uncertainty of the latent structure of the
DAS
-A suggests that it should be interpreted with caution whenever used with older adults.

The Arabic Scale of Death Anxiety (ASDA) was constructed and validated in a sample of undergraduates (17-33 yrs) in 3 Arab countries, Egypt (n = 418), Kuwait (n = 509), and Syria (n = 709). In its final form, the ASDA consists of 20 statements. Each item is answered on a 5-point intensity scale anchored by 1: No, and 5: Very much. Alpha reliabilities ranged from .88 to .93, and item-remainder correlations ranged between .27 and .74; the 1-week test-retest reliability was .90 (Egyptians only), denoting high internal consistency and stability. The correlations between the ASDA and Templer's
DAS
ranged from .60 to .74 denoting high convergent validity of the ASDA against the
DAS
in the 3 Arab countries. Four factors were extracted in the Egyptian sample and labeled "Fear of dead people and tombs", "Fear of postmortem events", "Fear of lethal disease", and "death preoccupation". The first two factors were almost completely identical in the three countries. The item, "I fear the torture of the grave", had a very high mean score. The efficacy of Withania somnifera (Ws) to limit myocardial injury after ischemia and reperfusion was explored and compared to that of Vit E, a reference standard known to reduce mortality and infarct size due to myocardial infarction. Wistar rats (150-200 g) were divided into six groups and received orally saline (sham, control group), Ws-50/kg (Ws control and treated group) and Vit E-100 mg/kg (Vit E control and treated group) respectively for 1 month. On the 31st day, rats of the control, Vit E and Ws treated groups were anesthetized and subjected to 45 min occlusion of the LAD coronary artery followed by 60 min reperfusion. Hemodynamic parameters: systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure (SAP, DAP, MAP), heart rate (HR), left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP), left ventricular peak (+)LVdP/dt and (-)LVdP/dt were monitored.

were removed and processed for histopathological and biochemical studies: Myocardial enzyme viz, creatin phosphokinase (CPK), and antioxidant parameters: malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) were estimated. Postischemic reperfusion produced significant cardiac necrosis,
depression
of left ventricular functions (MAP, LVEDP, (+) and (-)LVdP/dt) and a significant fall in GSH (p < 0.01), SOD, CAT (p < 0.05), LDH and CPK (p < 0.01) as well as an increase in MDA level (p < 0.05) in the control group rats as compared to sham group. The changes in levels of protein and GPx was however, not significant. Ws and Vit E favorably modulated most of the hemodynamic, biochemical and histopathological parameters though no significant restoration in GSH, MAP (with Vit E) were observed. Ws on chronic administration markedly augmented antioxidants (GSH, GSHPx, SOD, CAT) while Vit E did not stimulate the synthesis of endogenous antioxidants compared to sham. Results indicate that Ws significantly reduced myocardial injury and emphasize the beneficial action of Ws as a cardioprotective agent.

Given the importance of romantic and dating relationships during adolescence, the purpose of the study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Dating Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (DAS-A). Participants were 757 high school students (56% girls, ages 15 to 18 years). Adolescents completed the
DAS
-A, the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A), a Dating Questionnaire, and the Revised Beck
Depression
Inventory-II (BDI-II). Factor analysis of the
DAS
-A yielded a 3-factor solution with acceptable internal consistencies: fear of negative evaluation in dating situations (FNE-Dating); social distress when interacting with real or potential dating partners (SD-Date); and social distress when in a group of mixed-sex peers (SD-Group). Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the 3-factor solution. Results indicated that younger adolescents reported more dating anxiety than older adolescents, and boys reported more SD-Group than girls. Dating anxiety was associated with peer-related anxiety and depressive symptoms and was a significant predictor of adolescents' current and usual dating status, even when controlling for adolescents' peer-related social anxiety. The findings provide support for the reliability and validity of the
DAS
-A. Clinical and research implications are discussed.

The mechanism responsible for cardiac
depression
in septic shock remains unknown. The present study examined whether nitric oxide (NO) overproduced by inducible NO synthase (iNOS) can inhibit aerobic energy metabolism and impair the myocardial function in endotoxin-treated rat hearts. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) significantly decreased systolic blood pressure (BP) to 44% of control during the 48 h treatment.
Hearts
from control and LPS-treated rats were perfused in a Langendorff apparatus. After LPS injection, left ventricular (LV) developed pressure (LVDP) was significantly depressed, plasma NO2-/NO3- (NO(x)) concentration was markedly increased, and myocardial adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), creatine phosphate (CrP), and the ratio of ATP/adenosine 5'-diphosphate were progressively decreased with time. Immunological examination showed a significant expression of iNOS protein in the LPS-treated myocytes. Aminoguanidine, an inhibitor of iNOS, significantly attenuated these LPS-induced functional and metabolic changes. Myocardial cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) content was significantly increased after LPS injection. Methylene blue, an inhibitor of soluble guanylate cyclase, blunted this increase in cGMP and significantly restored the LPS-induced contractile dysfunction 6 h after LPS injection. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between LVDP and myocardial cGMP levels as well as a significant negative correlation between LVDP and plasma NO(x) levels. In contrast, 48 h after LPS injection, methylene blue no longer affected cardiac performance, and there was a significant positive correlation between LVDP and myocardial ATP content. Furthermore, the normalized activities (as a ratio of the citrate synthase activity) of mitochondrial NADH-CoQ reductase, succinate-CoQ reductase, and ATPase, were significantly inhibited, and the swelling or disruption of mitochondria cristae was seen in the 48 h LPS treatment. These LPS-induced functional and morphological disorders in the mitochondria were significantly improved by aminoguanidine. The findings suggest that sustained production of NO by iNOS leads to contractile dysfunction via cGMP in the early stage, but that it can directly impair the mitochondrial function, lower myocardial energy production, and contribute significantly to the myocardial dysfunction in the later stage of septic shock.

This study examined the construct validity of the Detroit Area Study Discrimination Questionnaire (DAS-DQ) in 49 healthy African American adults, with respect to its association with global measures and daily experiences of psychological demand. Daily experiences of psychological demand were obtained using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods. Everyday Mistreatment, as measured by the
DAS
-DQ, was significantly related to global reports of perceived stress and
depression
but was unrelated to measures of hostility and social desirability. Everyday Mistreatment was significantly related to average EMA score measures of Negative Affect and Social Conflict but was unrelated to daily experiences of Task Demand or Decisional Control. Negative Affect mediated the relation between Everyday Mistreatment and global reports of perceived stress. In contrast, Lifetime History of Discrimination, as measured by the
DAS
-DQ, was unrelated to global measures or daily experiences of stress. Thus, this study lends support to the construct validity of the
DAS
-DQ.

Dental anxiety in the general population is more prevalent in females than in males. The presence of dental anxiety was studied in a group of 189 females and 176 males using the following scales: the Dental Anxiety Scale (divided into
DAS
1 containing 6 items, which explores a patient's dental anxiety and
DAS
2 containing 13 items, which looks at dental anxiety concerning dentist-patient relations), the Self-Rating
Depression
Scale (SDS), and the Quality of Life Index (QL-Index). The results obtained showed significant differences only in relation to dental anxiety regarding the use of instruments (such as needles and handpieces) and the tilted-back position of the chair (
DAS
1). No significant gender differences emerged between the two groups in relation to dental anxiety regarding dentist-patient relations (
DAS
2),
depression
(SDS), and the quality of life (QL-Index). The results may explain why women avoid dental care and indicate new designs to make the chair position more comfortable would be useful.

from severely Cu-deficient rats show a variety of pathological defects, including hypertrophy and, in intact hearts,
depression
of contractile function. Paradoxically, isolated cardiomyocytes from these rats exhibit enhanced contractile properties. Because hypertrophy and enhanced contractility observed with other pathologies are associated with elevation of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF)-I, this mechanism was examined for the case of dietary Cu deficiency. Male, weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were provided diets that were deficient (approximately 0.5 mg Cu/kg diet) or adequate (approximately 6 mg Cu/kg diet) in Cu for 5 wk. IGF-I was measured in serum and hearts by an ELISA method, cardiac IGF-I and IGF-II receptors and IGFBP-3 were measured by Western blotting analysis, and mRNAs for cardiac IGF-I and IGF-II were measured by RT-PCR. Contractility of isolated cardiomyocytes was assessed by a video-based edge-detection system. Cu deficiency depressed serum and heart IGF-I and heart IGFBP-3 protein levels and increased cardiac IGF-I receptor protein. Cardiac IGF-II protein and mRNA for cardiac IGF-I and IGF-II were unaffected by Cu deficiency. A Cu deficiency-induced increase in cardiomyocyte contractility, as indicated by increases in maximal velocities of shortening (-dL/dt) and relengthening (+dL/dt) and decrease in time to peak shortening (TPS), was confirmed. These changes were largely inhibited by use of H-1356, an IGF-I receptor blocker. We conclude that enhanced sensitivity to IGF-I, as indicated by an increase in IGF-I receptor protein, accounts for the increased contractility of Cu-deficient cardiomyocytes and may presage cardiac failure.

The present study evaluated the cardioprotective potential of bosentan, a mixed endothelin type A and B receptor antagonist, in the myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion model of myocardial infarction. Adult male wistar rats (175-225 g) were divided into three groups: sham operated, non-myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (SHAM); saline-treated myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion control (CON); bosentan-treated myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion (BOS). All animals were anaesthetized and subjected to 40 min. occlusion of left anterior descending coronary artery followed by 120 min. of reperfusion. Saline or drug was administered to the CON or BOS group, respectively, 20 min. after the left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion. Haemodynamic parameters viz. systolic arterial pressure, diastolic arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded throughout the experimental period.
Hearts
were subsequently excised and processed for histopathological and infarct size evaluation and for biochemical estimation of cardiac specific enzyme creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and myocardial malondialdehyde, a lipid peroxidation marker. Myocardial ischaemic reperfusion resulted in severe myocardial injury,
depression
of haemodynamic function, significant increase in malondialdehyde levels and decline in CK-MB isoenzyme activity in the heart tissue. Administration of bosentan (3 mg/kg, intravenously) slightly improved haemodynamic effects, decreased myocardial oxygen consumption, significantly (P<0.01) attenuated the rise in malondialdehyde levels and loss of myocardial CK-MB isoenzyme activity compared to the CON group, whereas bosentan administration significantly reduced the percentage area of fiber loss and infarct area. It is therefore concluded that endothelin-1 may mediate myocardial damage produced by ischaemia and reperfusion and that dual blockade of endothelinA and endothelinB receptors may have potential as a mode of therapy for myocardial infarction.
