A 1-month-old Jersey calf died of oxalate nephropathy. The calf had access to antifreeze (ethylene glycol) 3 days prior to death. Since ethylene glycol toxicosis had not been reported in cattle, the effects or oral administration of ethylene glycol were studied in 7 calves and 3 cows. The toxic dose ranged from 2 to 10 ml of ethylene glycol per kg of body weight. Clinical signs were increased respiration, staggering gait, paraparesis, depression and later, recumbency and death. Hemoglobinuria and epistaxis were seen at doses of 10mg/kg of body weight. Azotemia, hypocalcemia and neutrophilia were constant findings whereas acidosis, plasma hyperosmolality and hemolytic anemia were seen in the animals receiving the higher doses. A diagnosis of ethylene glycol toxicosis must be based upon a history of ingestion and the presence of calcium oxalate crystals in body tissues (especially the kidney and brain).

The injection of aethimizol to rats (10 mg/kg) causes an irregular widening of cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum in "light" pyramidal neurons of zone CA1 of dorsal hippocampus, which is considered as a depression of the neuronal apparatus of protein synthesis. A 1 mg/kg dose causes, in some synapses, a complex of changes supposed to express the activation of synapses. No essential changes were revealed in the heart neurons. Aethimizol acts selectively on the ultrastructure of central nervous system and does not exert a pronounced action on autonomic neurons.

This study tested the hypothesis that discriminant function analysis of clinical and exercise-test variables including computerized ST measurements could improve the prediction of severe coronary artery disease. Secondary objectives were to demonstrate the effect of digoxin and/or resting electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities, and to evaluate the relative importance of ST measurements made during the recovery phase and in the three lead group areas. The design was a retrospective analysis of data collected during exercise testing and coronary angiography. The ECG data were gathered and stored in digital format on optical discs and all ST measurements were made off-line using the authors' own software. Univariate and multivariate analytic methods were used to analyze all pretest characteristics as well as hemodynamic and computerized ECG responses to exercise. A 1,000-bed Veterans Affairs Medical Center served as the setting. The study included 446 male veterans who underwent a sign or symptom limited treadmill exercise test and coronary angiography. Analysis was also performed on a subset of this population formed by excluding patients receiving digoxin or with resting ECGs exhibiting left ventricular hypertrophy or ST depression (n = 328). In the total study population, the authors derived a treadmill score using discriminant function analysis. This score included: (1) the time-slope area in lead V5 during recovery; (2) delta heart rate; (3) angina pectoris during the exercise test; and (4) presence of diagnostic Q waves on the resting ECG. This score was effective in predicting triple vessel/left main disease and outperformed exercise-induced ST depression for predicting severe coronary artery disease. After exclusion of patients with ECGs exhibiting left ventricular hypertrophy or resting ST depression and patients receiving digoxin, discriminant function analysis chose: (1) the time-slope area in lead V5 during recovery and (2) delta heart rate. Exclusion of these patients resulted in a nonsignificant decrease in specificity of all ST criteria. ST-segment amplitude or slope in lead V5 at 3.5 minutes in recovery clearly outperformed the maximal exercise measurements in both groups. Summing the depressions or selecting the most depression in the three areas (ie, lateral-V5, inferior-II, anterior-V2) did not improve test performance. Leads other than V5 did not contain significant diagnostic information. A quantitative approach to exercise testing using discriminant function analysis enhanced the tests' performance for predicting severe coronary disease. The inclusion of patients taking digoxin or with resting ECG abnormalities nonsignificantly decreases the specificity of all ST criteria.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A 1 year double-blind trial of bromperidol decanoate and fluphenazine decanoate was conducted in the maintenance treatment of 47 outpatients with schizophrenia. Six patients relapsed on bromperidol decanoate and none on fluphenazine decanoate, a difference which is statistically significant. No significant differences in positive and negative symptoms, nor depression measures were found between treatment groups when comparisons were made for change in score from entry to last visit. However, patients on fluphenazine decanoate achieved significantly better changes on social disability (Morningside scale) compared to those on bromperidol decanoate. The incidence of extrapyramidal side-effects was similar in both groups, and no statistically significant differences emerged in body weight change between treatments.

To determine the effects of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) on the properties of the plasma proteins that bind L-thyroxine (T4) immature rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were injected intraperitoneally on days 0 and 3 with 0.5 mg E2-3-benzoate/100 g body weight, and plasma was sampled on days 4, 7, or 12. Control trout received peanut oil alone. E2 caused a small but significant decrease in the free T4 index. Saturation analysis on miniature G-25 Sephadex columns revealed at least two major T4-binding sites. Filtration on agarose Bio-gel A 1.5 also indicated two major T4-binding protein fractions with molecular weights of 150 and 55 kDa with a small proportion of T4 binding to a 1,500-kDa site presumed to be lipoprotein. Addition of unlabeled T4 displaced [125I]T4 from the 55-kDa site and unmasked an adjacent site of higher molecular weight. E2 increased the proportion of T4 bound to the low-affinity (150 kDa) site relative to that bound to the high-affinity (55 kDa) site, increased the level of protein associated with the 1,500-kDa site and its T4 binding, and also initiated the production of presumed vitellogenin (VTG), which bound a small amount of T4. It is concluded that the E2-induced depression in FT4 is caused by a shift in T4 binding between high-affinity and low-affinity sites, and also by binding of small amounts of T4 to presumed lipoprotein and VTG.

To study the predictive value of silent ischemia, a total of 132 patients with first transmural myocardial infarction were examined, 69 had anterior and 63 had inferior myocardial infarction. On days 8-12 of onset of the disease, all the patients underwent loading two-dimensional echocardiography along with transesophageal pacing, as well as polyposition coronary angiography. According to the echocardiographic findings, 3 groups of patients were identified: 1) 34 (25.8%) with painful ischemia; 2) 37 (28.0%) with silent ischemia; 3) 61 (46.2%) with a negative test. Ischemic alterations were more frequently seen in inferior (73%) than in anterior (36.2%) myocardial infarction. The patients with painful ischemia showed a lower threshold of ischemia occurrence, more severe and prolonged ST segment depression, and greater extent of an asynergic area than did the patients with silent ischemia. A 1-5-year (mean 2.4) follow-up revealed that in terms of the risk for postinfarction angina, recurrent myocardial infarction and fatal outcomes, patients with silent ischemia represent an intermediate group between those with painful ischemia and those who have a negative load test.

Ten normal subjects underwent static threshold visual field testing of both eyes with the Humphrey perimeter, with one eye tested twice. The mean sensitivity of the field seemed virtually identical in the two eyes, with the average difference between the right and left eyes (0.65 decibels [dB]) being no greater than the testing error as reflected in the difference between the same eye tested twice (0.7 dB). The authors provide the mathematical basis for recognizing that a right eye-left eye difference in mean sensitivity might be abnormal. Additional information is needed about the variance of the right eye-left eye difference in the population at large, but present information suggests that a 2-dB difference may be meaningful on a single examination. A 1.5-dB difference is statistically significant if confirmed on a second test, and a difference as small as 1 dB may be meaningful if shown consistently in a series of four examinations. In all cases, nonglaucomatous causes of field abnormality needs to be ruled out, and the generalized asymmetry is most meaningful if it is consistent with asymmetry of cupping or intraocular pressure. Several cases are reported in which a mild (1 dB) generalized depression of the visual field is the only recognizable abnormality in the visual field in eyes with early glaucoma.

A 1-year follow-up study was carried out in 77 patients with panic attacks (panic disorder). Of these patients 43% were remitted; avoidance behaviour and chronic anxiety were more persistent than panic attacks within the 1-year period. The main predictor for features of anxiety in the follow-up was avoidance behaviour. The most prominent prognostic factor for features of depression was the history of previous depressive episodes. Female patients had a poorer outcome than male patients.

We examined the influence of goal conflict and ambivalence on psychological and physical well-being through the personal striving framework. Eighty-eight undergraduates in two studies listed 15 of their personal strivings and rated them on the amount of conflict experienced between them and ambivalence experienced about each. Diary and experience sampling methods were used to assess positive and negative affect and physical symptomatology. Conflict and ambivalence were associated with high levels of negative affect, depression, neuroticism, and psychosomatic complaints. Conflict was also associated with health center visits and illnesses over the past year. A 1-year follow-up demonstrated that conflict and ambivalence ratings were stable and that these ratings predicted psychosomatic complaints over time. In a third study, undergraduates' thoughts and activities were randomly sampled over a 3-week period. Subjects were less likely to act on conflictful and ambivalent strivings but to spend more time thinking about these strivings.

The comutagenic and desmutagenic effect of quercetin on the mutagenicity of typical mutagens e.g. 2-acetylaminofluorene (AAF), 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) and benzo[alpha]pyrene (B[a]P), in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100 and TA98/1,8 DNP6 were examined. In the mixed application of AAF with quercetin in the presence of mammalian metabolic activation system (S9 mix), the numbers of revertants in TA98 increased by as much 2.2-5.0-fold compared with the sum of those in the separate applications of AAF and quercetin. A 1.4-2.7-fold increase was observed in TA100. Quercetin did not affect the mutagenicity of 4NQO, and depressed that of B[a]P. Dose-response curves for mutagenicity of quercetin with or without AAF (5 micrograms/plate) were examined. The results suggest that quercetin, present in a molarity of up to 1.5 times that of AAF, is apparently effective in enhancing the mutagenicity of AAF, because a linear dose-response curve was observed in the range of 0-5 micrograms/plate quercetin with AAF although quercetin alone was not mutagenic in the same range. Dose-response curves for mutagenicity of quercetin with or without 5 micrograms/plate B[a]P did not increase compared with that for quercetin alone. The mutagenicity of the mixed application of B[a]P with quercetin was reduced to about 60% of the sum of separate application at doses ranging from 25 to 100 micrograms/plate of quercetin. Since enhancement and depression of mutagenicity by quercetin were observed for indirect mutagens, AAF and B[a]P, respectively, in the presence of S9 mix, quercetin may affect the metabolic pathway of these mutagens.
