Gram-negative bacterial infections were documented in 6 neonatal New World camelids (5 Ilamas and 1 alpaca). The organisms isolated from blood before death or from multiple organs after death were Escherichia coli (n = 3), Actinobacillus sp (n = 1), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 1). Only 2 crias survived, and 1 became blind secondary to retinal detachment and ocular inflammation, which developed after treatment for bacterial infection. Abnormal events during the perinatal period (prematurity, dystocia, cesarean section, weak at birth) were reported in all 6 crias. Signs of
depression
, convulsions, and/or coma were observed in all animals. Diarrhea and
respiratory distress
were also noticed in the 3 crias that died shortly after admission. Serum immunoglobulins were assessed, but without the benefit of a stall-side test specific for Ilama immunoglobulins. All crias were suspected to have poor transfer of maternal immunoglobulins. Hemograms and serum biochemical values prior to the initiation of treatment were obtained on 5 of the 6 crias. Total nucleated cells ranged from 1,400 to 23,100 cells/microliter. Four of the 5 crias has a left shift, and 2 crias had toxic neutrophils. Serum glucose concentrations, measured in 5 of 6 crias, ranged from 83 to 293 mg/dl. Serum creatinine values were high in 2 of 5 crias, 1 of which had acute tubular necrosis. Three crias with high serum electrolyte (sodium, chloride, or potassium) values subsequently died. Arterial blood gas values were assessed in 3 crias, 1 of which had respiratory alkalosis and mild hypoxemia.

In the second herd, 5 of 30 Holstein heifers were affected (1 died). The Conium alkaloids, coniine and gamma-coniceine, were quantified in the hay, the plants from the responsible hayfield, and the urine of affected animals.

Hyperbilirubinaemia in newborn infants is generally regarded as a problem, and bilirubin itself as toxic metabolic waste, but the high frequency in newborn infants suggests that the excess of neonatal bilirubin may have a positive function. To investigate the hypothesis that bilirubin has a role as a free-radical scavenger, the rate of rise in serum bilirubin in the first few days of life was measured in 44 infants with five illnesses thought to enhance free-radical production and in 58 control infants. The infants were selected from 2700 consecutive births by exclusion of those with factors known to affect bilirubin metabolism, including enteral feeding. The control infants were those who seemed to be ill and received treatment, including restriction of enteral feeds, but in whom no illness, or disorders not related to free-radical production, were found. The mean serum bilirubin rise was significantly lower in the combined illness group than in the control group (36.1 [95% Cl 26.9-45.3] vs 66.7 [55.9-77.5] mumol.l-1.day-1; p less than 0.0001). Thirteen piglets were infused with live Escherichia coli at a rate of 2 to 10 x 10(8) colony-forming units per hour for six hours or until death and were divided into two groups: the septic control group (n = 8), and the naloxone-treated group (n = 5), which received 8 mg/kg/h of naloxone by continuous infusion. The results showed a significant reduction of QS/QT, VD/VT, and arterial carbon dioxide pressure at one hour and a significant increase of arterial carbon dioxide pressure and minute ventilation at 1, 3, and 4 hours in the naloxone-treated group, compared with the untreated septic group. None of the piglets in the naloxone-treated group developed ventilatory

, while 75% of those in the untreated septic group did. Among the latter ficial effects of naloxone are likely related to its action on the central and peripheral respiratory regulatory mechanisms. Outpatient arthroscopic knee surgery carries with it certain risk factors similar to those accompanying other major knee procedures. These risks may be related to the complexity of the procedure, exposure to anesthesia, or risk factors from previous medical history. Two cases of acute pulmonary edema following arthroscopic knee surgery in otherwise healthy teenage athletes are presented. Both patients developed acute

Histologic renal changes were interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration and degeneration and necrosis of tubular epithelial cells. Lesions in respiratory tissues included thickening and edema of the air sacs, congestion of the tracheal mucosa, and frothy serous exudate. Histologic tracheal lesions were deciliation, mucous gland distortion, inflammatory cell infiltration, and squamous metaplasia. Clinically, H13-IBV was highly pathogenic in birds infected at 1 day of age and mildly pathogenic in birds infected at 4 weeks of age. Kidney lesions were of marked severity only in birds infected at 1 day of age. Tracheal lesions were similar in severity in both age groups.

Fibronectin is a large-molecular-weight glycoprotein present on most cell surfaces, in extracellular fluids, and in plasma. Although chloral hydrate sedation has been proposed as an alternative to evaluation under anesthesia for pediatric patients who are unable to cooperate with routine test procedures, a careful study of the drug's safety and effectiveness is lacking. This study reports the effectiveness and safety of high-dose chloral hydrate for ophthalmic examination in 302 patients between the ages of 1 month and 5 years. The patients had nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to drug administration. The patients were monitored during sedation and until fully awake. Eighty-eight percent of the patients (266/302) were successfully sedated without a supplemental dose. There were no reports of any complications including emesis,

, behavioral problems, changes in vital signs, patient injury, or hospital admission. The high-dose chloral hydrate protocol described, results in safe and generally successful sedation of pediatric patients for ophthalmic examination.

Microscopically, renal changes were primarily associated with the medullary region. Lesions included an interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration, urate deposition, edema, and degenerative and necrotic tubular changes. Tracheal changes included marked thickening of the mucosa, desquamation of ciliated and glandular epithelia and replacement with a stratified undifferentiated epithelium, and inflammatory cell infiltration.
