Astragalus lusitanicus is a toxic legume grown in Morocco and in some other Mediterranean countries. In small ruminants, poisoning by this plant is dominated by nervous signs characterized by many cycles of excitement-

. Macroscopic examination of poisoned animals showed congestive lesions and oedema in the brain and lungs. Microscopic lesions consisted mainly of vacuolar degeneration in neurons, hepatocytes and in spleen and kidney cells. Serum activity of
AST
and CK as well as blood glucose and urea were increased as a result of poisoning. However, serum activity of alpha-mannosidase was not modified as is the case in locoism. Chemical investigations showed that A. lusitanicus does not contain swainsonine or miserotoxin and its selenium concentration is very low. However, this legume contains indolizidin alkaloids and a first compound was purified and identified.

As an antidepressant, bupropion is considered to be a safe agent that usually causes infrequent and mild increase of serum liver enzymes. Asymptomatic elevation of serum transaminases was previously reported only in a single case. We describe a patient who developed typical acute hepatitis after receiving six weeks of bupropion for
depression
. His presentation was characterized with acute onset of symptoms associated with significantly elevated ALT,
AST
, and LDH and acute hepatic inflammation. The clinical course of our patient, including incubation period, pattern of liver enzyme elevation, and time of recovery, was similar to, but much more severe than, the case reported by Oslin and Duffy. Discontinuation of bupropion was followed by a rapid resolution of clinical symptoms and liver enzymes. The incidence of bupropion-induced hepatitis remains to be defined even though it appears to be relatively low. Since the clinical application of bupropion is broader, we must be aware of the clinical entity of bupropion-induced hepatitis.

The aim of the study was to determine the level of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in blood samples taken from 102 patients with recurrent major depression (according to DSM-IV). The analysis was performed during the acute period of major depression in 3 subgroups: with and without suicidal ideation (S+, S-), and after suicidal attempts (AS), and during remission of depressive symptoms. Putative correlations between the level of total cholesterol and severity of depressive symptoms and between total serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and suicidal risk were evaluated. The patients did not suffer from any additional disorders, factors such as specific diet or pharmacotherapy, which could influence the levels of lipids, were absent. Low total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in persons in the acute period of major depression provided a useful parameter of suicide risk. A significant statistical correlation between the low level of total cholesterol and suicidal ideation was also found (r = 0.82, p < 0.05) as well as between the low level of serum total cholesterol and severity of
depression
, as evaluated by HAMD-S (r = 0.27, p < 0.05). During the remission of depressive symptoms, total cholesterol level and LDL-cholesterol increased significantly (p < 0.05) but a significant difference (p < 0.05) between subgroups (S-, S+, AS) were still observed. Low total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in remission in persons with the diagnosis of recurrent major depression may help to estimate the risk of suicidal behavior in the next depressive disorder. Possibly, low level of serum total cholesterol is a stable feature in some persons with recurrent major depression, probably dependent on their predisposition to autoaggression and presence of depressive disorder.

Ribavirin has recently been demonstrated to be efficacious in combination with interferon (IFN) alpha-2b for the treatment of relapsed hepatitis C infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the pharmacokinetics and adverse reactions of ribavirin when ribavirin plus IFN alpha-2b were administered to patients affected with chronic hepatitis C. Nineteen patients received intramuscular IFN alpha-2b at a dose of 6 or 10 million units and oral ribavirin at 600 mg or 800 mg daily for 24 weeks. The pharmacokinetic profiles of ribavirin were assessed by the measurement of plasma concentrations. Twelve patients were continuously given both ribavirin and IFN alpha-2b, whereas in 7 patients the therapy was discontinued due to severe adverse drug reactions such as skin eruption, anemia and

. There were no significant differences in ribavirin dose, Hb, ALT and

values between the continued and the discontinued therapy groups. In contrast, the pretreatment platelet level and patient age of the discontinued therapy group were significantly different to the continued group. The trough plasma concentration of ribavirin in the discontinued therapy group was significantly higher than that in the continued group at week 1. These results suggest that the monitoring of plasma ribavirin concentrations may be valid for predicting the early phase of adverse drug reactions, thereby providing useful information for the adjustment of the ribavirin dosing for each patient.

Inadvertent ingestion of thiafentanil oxalate by a captive adult female mountain lion (Puma concolor) caused a prolonged clinical syndrome that included sedation and
depression
, muscle tension, and myopathy that was incompletely antagonized by naltrexone HCl. A serum chemistry profile revealed markedly elevated creatinine phosphokinase (CK; 490,450 IU/l), alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 1,896 IU/l), and aspartate aminotransferase (
AST
; 4,321 IU/l) 2 days after onset. The affected animal's condition gradually improved over the next 15 days in response to supportive therapy that included diazepam (5 mg as needed), Normasol R (3 l/day), dexamethasone (tapering dose starting at 1 mg/kg), and ketoprofen (1 mg/kg). She eventually recovered completely. Based on these observations, carcasses of animals immobilized with thiafentanil should be marked and disposed of properly to preclude opportunities for secondary exposure and potential intoxication in scavenging species. In addition, caution is advised when using thiafentanil in animals that could be preyed upon before full metabolism of the drug.

It has been reported that malaria infection impairs hepatic drug clearance and causes a down-regulation of CYP-mediated monooxygenase activities in rodents and humans. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Plasmodium berghei infection on the activity of liver monooxygenases in female DBA/2 and C57BL/6 mice. In both mouse strains, P. berghei infection decreased activities mediated by CYP1A (EROD: DBA/2 65.3%, C57BL/6 44.7%) and 2B (BROD: DBA/2 64.3%, C57BL/6 49.8%) subfamily isoforms and increased activities mediated by 2A5 (COH: DBA/2 182.4%, C57BL/6 148.5%) and 2E1 (PNPH: DBA/2 177.8%, C57BL/6 128.5%) isoforms as compared to non-infected controls. (354.1%) activities in the blood serum, our findings are consistent with the view that CYP2A5 activity is induced by liver injury. An almost generalized

Although the effects of acute pesticide poisoning are well known for the pesticides most currently used, hardly any data exist on health effects after long-term low-dose exposures. Major unresolved issues include the effect of moderate exposure in the absence of poisoning. The increased utilization of pesticides other than organophosphates makes it even more difficult to find associations. In this study a cohort of 106 intensive agriculture workers were assessed twice during the course of a spraying season for changes in serum biochemistry, namely enzymes reflecting cytotoxicity (
AST
, ALT, LDH, CK, and amino-oxidase) and other biochemical parameters, such as markers of nephrotoxicity (urea, creatinine) and lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides). Several criteria for estimating pesticide exposure were used, the most important one being serum cholinesterase
depression
greater than 25% from baseline to peak exposure. Our results revealed an association of pesticide exposure with changes in
AST
(increased activity), LDH, and amino-oxidase (decreased activity) as well as with changes in serum creatinine and phosphorus (lower and higher levels, respectively). These results provide support for a very slight impairment of the liver function, but overall these findings are consistent with no clinically significant hepatotoxicity. The progression of coccidiosis provoked by Eimeria acervulina was followed in chicks fed on OTA-contaminated as well as on OTA-free diets. More heavy progress of duodenal coccidiosis, including mortality, occurred in OTA-treated chicks as can be seen from the higher value of lesion (3.50) and oocyst (31.65) indices. A stronger decrease of serum total protein was found in OTA-treated chicks (22.80 g/l) than in chicks infected with E. acervulina(24.20 g/l), but that decrease was strongest in chicks treated with OTA and simultaneously infected with E. acervulina (19.71 g/l). The serum concentration of uric acid was significantly increased in all chicks exposed to OTA, most notably in those additionally infected with E. acervulina (1020.6 (micro mol/L), whereas the serum enzyme activity of
AST
was increased only in chicks infected with E. acervulina and highest in those fed OTA contaminated diet (122.2 U/L). This study evaluated the efficacy of 2 programs for preventing depressive symptoms in adolescents. Participants were 380 high school students randomly assigned to a cognitive-behavioral program (CB), an interpersonal psychotherapy-adolescent skills training program (IPT-AST), or a no-intervention control. The interventions involved eight 90-min weekly sessions run in small groups during wellness classes. At postintervention, students in both the CB and IPT-

groups reported significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms than did those in the no-intervention group, controlling for baseline

scores; the 2 intervention groups did not differ significantly from each other. The effect sizes, using Cohen's d, for the CB intervention and the IPT-
