1. Two experiments are reported. In both experiments a cereal-based diet containing 5 mg copper/kg was fed to two breeds of laying hens for 336 d. In Expt 1 four other groups were given this diet with the addition of CuSO4.5H2O to give added levels of 200, 400, 600 and 800 mg Cu/kg diet. In Expt 2 the levels of added dietary Cu used were 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg. 2. In Expt 1 records were kept of food intake, water intake, body-weight and egg production for eight 28 d periods and body-weight and egg number only were recorded for the full twelve periods. In Expt 2 full records, excluding water intake, were taken for all twelve periods. 3. Food and water intake showed a quadratic response to level of added dietary Cu, being enhanced at lower levels and depressed at higher levels of addition. 4. There was a quadratic response of total egg weight, mean egg weight and egg number to added dietary Cu. In Expt 1 egg number was maximum at 235 mg added Cu/kg diet for Warren Studler SSL (breed 1) and at 170 mg added Cu/kg diet for
Shaver
288 (breed 2). In Expt 2 no breed effect occurred, the maximum egg number being calculated to occur at 176 mg added Cu/kg diet. 5.
Depression
of body-weight gain occurred at high levels of Cu addition. The
depression
of liver and oviduct weight found at high levels of addition appeared to be directly related to body-weight. A marked amount of feather loss also occurred at a high inclusion of CuSO4 in the diet. 6. The reproductive systems of the hens did not appear to be adversely affected at the levels of additive used. Gross and microscopic examination of specific tissues revealed no pathological effects although gizzard and intestinal weights were increased and caecal weight decreased by high levels of added Cu. THose aspects of the blood chemistry examined did not reveal any consistent effect between the two experiments. 7. The liver Cu analyses indicate that between 600 and 800 mg added Cu/kg diet the liver Cu concentration rises sharply. Both liver Fe and Zn concentrations showed a positive linear response to added dietary Cu. In the kidney Cu and Zn concentrations were increased but only to a limited extent, while the concentration of Fe was unaffected.

The present study, using a sample of Turkish children, aimed to test two attachment-theory predictions: (a) institution-reared children who were separated from their parents at an early age are less likely to have secure attachment schemata than children from two-parent families, and (b) depressive schemata are positively related to insecure attachment schemata and negatively related to secure attachment schemata. Following a systems-theory perspective, we also predicted that the relationship between
depression
and attachment styles would be stronger for institution-reared children than for children from two-parent families. Hazan and
Shaver
's (1987) attachment-style items and the Beck
Depression
Inventory were administered to 20 institution-reared and 20 parent-reared boys by a female interviewer. The results supported the first two predictions of the study.

To evaluate the effect of lipid-lowering agents upon egg quality, reproductive performance, plasma lipids, and egg yolk cholesterol levels, 30-week-old
Shaver
laying hens were fed a basal diet (commercial ration) supplemented with 0.1% probucol (PROB), 0.025% gemfibrozil (GEMF), or lovastatin at 0.0005% (LOV1), 0.001% (LOV2), or 0.0015% (LOV3) for a 12-week experimental period. It was observed that the supplementation of the drugs did not impair albumen and shell quality. Hen performance was not adversely affected. The
depression
in triglyceride concentrations approached statistical significance only in LOV2 (38.5%), and total cholesterol was significantly depressed in LOV2 (36.0%), LOV3 (36.8%), PROB (29.6%), and GEMF (30.4%) treatments. Egg cholesterol content, expressed per gram of yolk, was significant lowered in LOV1 (7.5%) and LOV3 (12. 7%).

Brown chickens infected with Newcastle disease virus (NDV) Kudu 113. The infected chickens came down with Newcastle disease by day 3 post infection (PI). The major clinical signs were
depression
, greenish diarrhoea, paralysis of legs and wings, opisthotonus and torticolis. Mortality and morbidity were 52% and 1000%, respectively. There were haemorrhagic lesions in the wall of the intestine, proventricular mucosa and caecal tonsils. There were necrosis and mononuclear cell infiltration of the liver, kidney and spleen. There was a significant increase in daily mean HI antibody titres from days 3 to 9 PI. Similarly, significant rise in daily mean RTs were noticed in the infected chickens from days 1 to 13 PI. On the other hand, there was a decrease in daily mean TP concentrations of infected chickens, beginning from day 3 PI, and the lowest concentration of 2.60 +/- 0.15 g/dl was obtained by days 7 and 11 PI. The values of HI, RT and TP for the control chickens were relatively constant during the experiment. The correlation coefficient (r) between HI and RT was positive and highly significant (r = 0.725, p<0.001), while the relationship between HI and TP was negative but highly significant (r = -0.712, p<0.001). It was concluded that NDV Kudu 113 induced increases in values of HI and RT, which occurred concurrently with a decrease in TP concentrations of infected chickens.

The purpose of this study was to look for effects of attachment styles for emotional reacting with
depression
in 117 lung cancer patients who were undergoing surgery during hospitalization and six weeks later. All subjects were classified according to their attachment style (secure, avoidant, ambivalent) assessed by means of the instrument based on Hazan and
Shaver
's (1987) descriptions of how people typically feel in close relationships. The Beck
Depression
Inventory was used to measure
depression
. Anova variance analysis revealed higher level of
depression
in anxious-ambiwalent style than in the secure style or the avoidant style during hospitalization. Six weeks later higher level of
depression
was in the anxious-ambivalent subjects than in the secure. The avoidant style took the middle position and it did not differ with the level of
depression
from others. The results indicate that the secure or the avoidant style may protect lung cancer subjects from overreacting with
depression
during hospitalization, but the anxious-ambivalent style may increase the
depression
level. After the return home the insecure styles may react with stronger
depression
and the secure style with weaker
depression
.

The purpose of this study was to look for effects of attachment styles for emotional distress presented in
depression
in 117 lung cancer patients under surgical treatment and in 112 healthy subjects. The three attachment styles were assessed by means of the instrument based on Hazan and
Shaver
's (1987).
Depression
was measured by self-reporting Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). Manova variance analysis revealed significant main effect of the factor "group" which indicated higher level of
depression
in cancer patients than controls, significant main effect of factor "attachment style" which exhibited higher level of
depression
in the anxious-ambivalent subjects than in the secure ones, significant main effect of interaction between these two factors which revealed higher level of
depression
in the anxious-ambivalent style in lung cancer patients than in controls. Analysis of correlations indicated that the patients' secure style was adversely associated with
depression
, the anxious-ambivalent style positively correlated with patients'
depression
, the avoidant style did not correlate significantly with
depression
neither in healthy nor affected by the disease subjects. The secure subjects and the avoidant subjects did not differ significantly in the level of
depression
. The results indicate that the secure style and the avoidant style may protect lung cancer subjects before operation from excessive reacting with distress demonstrated in depressive symptoms. The ambivalent style was favorable for higher
depression
and it could be a risk factor for mood disorders in clinical group.

This study aims at investigating alcoholic inpatients' attachment system by combining a measurement of adult attachment style (AAQ, Hazan and
Shaver
, 1987. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 52(3): 511-524) and the degree of alexithymia (BVAQ, Bermond and Vorst, 1998. Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire, Unpublished data). Data were collected from 101 patients (71 men, 30 women) admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Belgium for alcohol use-related problems, between September 2003 and December 2004. To investigate the research question, cluster analyses and regression analyses are performed. We found that it makes sense to distinguish three subgroups of alcoholic inpatients with different degrees of impairment of the attachment system. Our results also reveal a pattern of correspondence between the severity of psychiatric symptoms-personality disorder traits (ADP-IV), anxiety (STAI), and
depression
(BDI-II-Nl)-and the severity of the attachment system's impairment. Limitations of the study and suggestions for further research are highlighted and implications for diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Little is known about whether severe psychopathology influences the assessment of self-reported attachment style. Fifty-eight randomly selected adult psychiatric inpatients completed the Experiences in Close Relationship questionnaire (ECR; Brennan, Clark, &
Shaver
, 1998) and were administered the 24-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS; Ventura et al., 1993) and the Hamilton
Depression
Rating Scale (HDRS; Hamilton, 1960) at both admission and discharge. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-I; First, Spitzer, Gibbon, & Williams, 1996) was used to establish Axis I diagnoses. The ECR scales showed good internal consistency and absolute stability both in patients with (n = 24) and without (n = 34) a psychotic disorder. Relative stability was only fair among patients with psychotic disorders but good among patients without psychotic disorders. Neither higher BPRS or HDRS scores, nor the presence of a psychotic disorder, significantly reduced the retest reliability of the ECR scales. These findings suggest that self-report measures might provide a reliable assessment of attachment style in patients with severe psychopathology, except for the most severely impaired patients.

Child abuse has proved to be one of the most important social challenges. The present study attempts (a) to determine the prevalence of child abuse in an urban area in Iran and (b) to differentiate abused from non-abused adolescent boys using parental and child characteristics. A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of different types of child abuse. The prevalence sample comprised 2,100 students selected through a multistage random sampling procedure. Data were collected using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Beck
Depression
Inventory, II (BDI-II), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), modified Hazan &
Shaver
Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) and Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90-R). Descriptive statistics and discriminant function analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 14.85% of the subjects were exposed to child abuse, with emotional abuse being most prevalent (52.09%). Also, it appeared that variables such as parental
depression
and anxiety and children's attachment styles, anxiety, and aggression can help discriminate abused boys from their non-abused counterparts.

Transgender women are disproportionately affected by HIV and experience high rates of
depression
and anxiety. The importance of secure attachment in buffering against negative sexual and mental health outcomes is well established. However, few studies have examined attachment among transgender women. We recruited a community-based convenience sample of 213 transgender women in New York City (
M
age
=
34.3;
SD
= 11.7). The majority were women of color (75.6%), almost half identified as heterosexual (47.4%), and 34.7% were HIV-positive. Preliminary analyses examined the sample distribution across attachment categories using the Revised Experiences in Close Relationships scale. Specifically, Brennan, Clark and
Shaver
's guidelines were used for categorization (43.19% fearful, 22.5% preoccupied, 21.6% dismissive, and 12.7% secure). Regression analyses examined the association of dimensional attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, and their interaction with
depression
, anxiety, self-efficacy for condom use, temptations for condomless sex, and condomless sex acts. Results indicated a positive association between attachment anxiety and
depression
, anxiety, temptations and probability for condomless sex; and also between attachment avoidance and condomless sex probability. A significant interaction indicated that individuals with low attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance (i.e., secure) had the greatest condom use self-efficacy and the lowest probability of engaging in condomless sex.
