Tyzzer's disease has been detected in nine unrelated, commercial rabbitries. During the acute stage of the disease, recently weaned rabbits showed profuse watery diarrhoea. Mortality was between 14.2 and 41.2% during the first three weeks of the outbreaks. In surviving animals, there was a chronic evolution with depression, anorexia, loss of weight and sometimes extreme cachexia. Reproduction animals were less badly affected. Multifocal hepatic necrosis, focal myocardial necrosis, patches of mucosal necrosis in ileum, caecum and colon and marked caecal oedema were most prominent at autopsy. In histological sections of the liver, bundles of slightly Gram-negative and Giemsa-, PAS- and silver-positive rod-shaped bacilli were established in apparently viable hepatocytes bordering foci of necrosis. They were also present in myocytes around necrotic foci in the heart and in enterocytes and smooth muscle cells of the muscularis mucosae of the intestinal mucosa. Transmission electron microscopy showed that these organisms had a similar ultrastructure as Bacillus piliformis. Most antibiotics used failed to combat the disease. Only oxytetracycline was active.

Tyzzer's disease, caused by Bacillus piliformis and characterized by a multifocal, necrotizing hepatitis was diagnosed in a 25 days old, male, German warmblood foal. The animal was submitted to the clinic of horses because of colic symptoms and a severe depression. Upon arrival it was comatose, recumbent and showed opisthotonos. Due to a severe, metabolic acidosis and a rapid progression of the disease, the foal was euthanatized. In immediately formalin-fixed tissue samples Bacillus piliformis was detected in the cytoplasma of hepatocytes by different histological techniques (Giemsa stain, silver impregnation technique by Warthin-Starry, immunohistology). A debilitated 9-yr-old female red panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) with a recent history of corticosteroid administration displayed anorexia, depression, and diarrhea for 2 days. Blood work revealed a moderate nonregenerative anemia, leukocytosis, hypokalemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and mildly elevated alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. Serology was negative for occult heartworm, Toxoplasma gondii, feline leukemia virus, feline infectious peritonitis, feline immunodeficiency virus, and canine distemper virus. Electron microscopy of the feces demonstrated corona-like virus particles. The panda died 3 days after initial presentation. Histologic findings included multifocal, acute, hepatic necrosis and diffuse, necrotizing colitis. Liver and colon lesions contained intracellular, curved, spore-forming, gram-negative, silver-positive rods morphologically consistent with Clostridium piliforme. This panda most likely contracted Tyzzer's disease subsequent to having a compromised immune system after corticosteroid administration and concurrent disease.
