Attempts to solve the problem of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg) infection of poultry by a combination of eradication and antibiotic treatment have at best met with only partial success. As a result of the continuing economic burden of the disease, there has been a renewed interest in vaccination as a tool in the control of Mg. A particularly pressing problem exists in the commercial egg industry, where the occurrence of MG infection of layer hens at the onset of egg production leads to a marked depression in productivity. Vaccination with the F strain of Mg has been demonstrated to efficacious in the alleviation of this problem, and the procedure is widely employed in the USA. Under field conditions of vaccination the F strain was found to be virtually nonpathogenic, although challenge experiments show that it retains some pathogenicity. The strain is carried in the trachea of vaccinated layers for as long as one year, but only spreads slowly. A specific serological response to Mg is produced in response to vaccination. To some extent, this response is dose dependent, but it is quantitatively less than that produced by virulent strains introduced by the same route. It has been suggested that the continued presence of a nonvirulent Mg in the upper respiratory tract, and the concomitant local immunological response, may prevent infection by field strains of Mg. In fact, judicious vaccination procedures appear to lead to the displacement of pathogenic Mg by the vaccine strain. By these means, it may be possible to eradicate Mg from flocks while maintaining production.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Baytril, Tylosin and Tiamulin for strains of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) M. synoviae (MS), M. meleagridis (MM) and M. iowae (MI) and serovars were compared. In general the lowest MIC for MG, MS and MI was obtained with Baytril, while for MM both Baytril and Tiamulin gave the lowest MICs. Protection against mortality was best attained with Baytril for broiler chicks and poults but against prevention of growth depression Baytril was best for broiler chicks whilst Baytril and Tylosin were equally effective in poults. MG was recovered from fewer birds following treatment with Tiamulin and then Baytril in that order. Baytril also had a suppressive effect on the natural infection of MI in poults. Fewer poults showed rapid serum agglutination reactions to MG antigen following Baytril treatment than with the other antimicrobials. The tolerance of turkey embryos for Baytril was between 1 and 2 mg/ egg. Baytril reduced MG infection of turkey embryos.

Avian mycoplasmas were mainly the cause of poultry industry economic losses; reduced meat and egg production and increases the antibiotic treatment cost. Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infection is designated as infectious sinusitis of turkeys and chronic respiratory disease of chickens (gasping, depression, semi closed eyes, infraorbital sinuses edema and decrease in egg production). This study aimed to prepare, evaluate and Compare in-house ELISA kits and lateral flow assay (LFA) from a local strain of MG with commercial ELISA kits and PCR consequently. A total of 54 samples (27 tracheal swabs, 10 trachea and 17 lung) and 50 serum samples collected from birds suffering from chronic respiratory disease were tested by prepared in-house ELISA, commercial ELISA kits, PCR and LFA; a high correlation coefficient between in-house ELISA using whole antigen or sonicated antigen and commercial kit was recorded. Lateral Flow assay (LFA) performance indicate a low sensitivity (77.5%) but maintain a high specificity (92%) compared to PCR. The in-house ELISA kits and LFA prepared could be used as a fast diagnostic technique for detection of MG in Egypt. According to the available knowledge the prepared LFA for diagnosis of MG infection in chickens was developed for the first time in Egypt.
