2,6,10,14-Tetramethylpentadecane (pristane), s.c. injected simultaneously with plasmacytoma inocula, enhances the transplantability of tumor cells. The effect is dose and time dependent. The enhancement is shown only by plasmacytoma (MOPC-315 and MPC-11) and not by the murine
lymphosarcoma
and chondrosarcoma tested. Various mechanisms, such as stress and
depression
of humoral and cellular immunity, have been considered.

Nine children treated for acute leukemia or
lymphosarcoma
developed subacute encephalopathy starting with listlessness,
depression
and impairment of speech. Walking difficulties, ataxia, spasticity and sphincter disorders developed later. Transient intracranial hypertension and abnormal movements respectively developed in two patients. EEG frontal slow waves, raised CSF protein, abnormal white matter radioisotope uptake and CT scan hypodensity with patchy contrast enhancement were evident at the onset. Later, dilated ventricles and calcification appeared in the younger patients. Post-mortem neuropathological studies of three patients disclosed predominantly perivascular myelin loss in areas of white matter necrosis, abnormalities of small vessels and numerous axonal swellings. The spinal cord showed secondary degeneration of the corticospinal tracts. Analysis of the aetiological factors in this series points to the prevailing danger of cranial radiotherapy, probably increased by the young age of patients and by associated drug administration.

A 17-year-old Arabian gelding was presented because of CNS
depression
and weight loss. Physical examination revealed generalized lymphadenopathy, pitting edema, and ascites. The diagnosis of
lymphosarcoma
with leukemic manifestations was based on cytologic and histopathologic examination of lymph node biopsy samples and a peripheral leukocyte count of 98,300/microliters, 94% of which were mature lymphocytes. These circulating lymphocytes lacked B-lymphocyte markers and did not respond to mitogenic stimulation, indicating functional incompetence. Though ultrastructural findings were equivocal, most morphologic changes indicated these cells were of T-lymphocyte lineage. Virus particles were not observed during transmission electron microscopy of these lymphocytes.

Thrombocytopenia in horses may be idiopathic or secondary to chronic infectious or inflammatory diseases (eg, equine infectious anemia,
lymphosarcoma
), drug administration, bone marrow
depression
, myelophthisic disease, or disseminated intravascular coagulation. This report describes EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia in a horse. Platelet counts for blood containing EDTA were consistently less than reference range, but platelet counts of blood containing heparin were within reference range. When thrombocytopenia is diagnosed in horses without clinical evidence of a bleeding tendency, EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia should be considered. The diagnosis can be confirmed simply by screening blood films for platelet clumps and by comparing platelet counts of paired blood samples, one containing EDTA and the other containing heparin.

A sixteen-year old pregnant Dutch Warmblood mare was referred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine because of sluggishness since eight days. The main clinical features were
depression
, pale mucous membranes with petechiae, ventral oedema and fever. Haematological evaluation revealed severe anaemia (haematocrit 0.15 L.L.-1) and leukopenia (2.3 G.L-1 with 96% lymphocytes). There was no thrombocytopenia. The horse died following a hospitalisation period of six days. At necropsy a (multicentric)
lymphosarcoma
was found in the bone marrow with neoplastic infiltration of the kidneys.

A 16-month-old, female alpaca presented with a 24-hour history of anorexia and
depression
. On necropsy, it was found that the liver was grossly enlarged and the cortices of both kidneys contained multifocal lesions. Histologic examination of these lesions and other tissues revealed infiltration with lymphocytic cells, a finding consistent with
lymphosarcoma
.

Seventy-eight patients with advanced malignant disease were treated with vincristine, an alkaloid derived from Vinca rosea Linn. Fifty-nine of these survived one month from the beginning of treatment and could be evaluated. Twenty made a good response, with return to activity and more than 75% regression of tumour deposits. Seven made a fair response with resumption of partial activity and at least a 25% regression of tumour deposits. Favourable results were seen in patients with Hodgkin's disease, reticulum cell sarcoma,
lymphosarcoma
, carcinoma of the breast, acute leukemia and choriocarcinoma. The duration of remission was usually brief but in five instances exceeded six months. Toxic reactions include a high incidence of alopecia and neurologic complications. The bone marrow
depression
is constant and predictable.

An example of lymphoblastic
lymphosarcoma
was found in a 7-year-old male brown bear (Ursus arctos) that died after having a 7-month history of
depression
, anorexia and watery diarrhea. Grossly the mesenteric lymph nodes were enlarged to approximately 4 to 6 times their normal size and histologically diagnosed as lymphoblastic
lymphosarcoma
. The small intestinal mucosa was corrugated and had severe mural thickening due to infiltrated neoplastic cells. Hepatic metastasis was also noted. This is the first reported case of
lymphosarcoma
in Ursidae in Korea. As an incidental finding, endogenous lipid pneumonia was noted in the lung.

An 8-month-old Holstein heifer with cervical enlargement was suspected of thymic
lymphosarcoma
given clinical signs of
depression
, tendency to lie down, cervical mass, jugular vein distension, conjunctival hyperemia, and ruminal tympany. Unilateral Horner's syndrome was also observed. Increased serum total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), LDH isozyme (LDH-2, and LDH-3) and serum thymidine kinase activity were observed. The findings of fine needle aspiration cytology of the cervical mass revealed large lymphoblasts with mitoses present. These findings strongly suggested the diagnosis of
lymphosarcoma
. Necropsy revealed a large mass in the cervical thymic region, which compressed the esophagus and trachea. Cranial masses in the frontal sinus and multiple extradural sites throughout the cranial vault were also recorded. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of thymic
lymphosarcoma
and demonstrated the brain involvement of neoplastic lymphoid cells in the cerebrum. This is a rare clinical case of thymic
lymphosarcoma
accompanied by brain metastasis in a Holstein heifer.
