This study examines the relationships between exposure to violence and depression, hopelessness, and purpose in life among black adolescents living in or around public housing developments. Black adolescents (N = 225, males = 44%) ages 11 to 19 years in a southern city were administered an anonymous questionnaire. Depression was correlated with the exposure to violence (r = .28), family conflict (r = .29), and corporal punishment (r = .32) scales, perceived probability of being alive at age 25 years (r = -.14), socioeconomic status of head of household (r = .14), anticipated socioeconomic status as an adult (r = .21), and number of sexual partners (r = .22). Based on multiple regression analysis, corporal punishment, family conflict, educational level of head of household, and perceived probability of being alive at age 25 years explained 18% (p < or = .0001) of the variation in depression. Family conflict, corporal punishment, and unemployed head of household explained 11% of the variation in the hopelessness scale. Unemployed head of household, the corporal punishment scale, and number of sexual partners explained 9.7% of the variation in purpose in life. Even when accounting for other social factors, exposure to violence in the home was associated with psychological distress in this sample of adolescents.

Client attendance at individual counseling sessions in community-based methadone treatment programs was more frequent among clients with self-reported psychological problems at intake. These problems included anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and other symptoms suggesting psychopathology (hallucinations, difficulty controlling violence, etc.). The sample consisted of 462 clients in treatment at least 90 days, divided into two groups of no psychological problems reported at intake (no problems group, N = 341) and two or more problems reported (high problems group, N = 121). The high problems group was twice as likely to attend the treatment program's recommended minimum number of individual counseling sessions (two per month) than was the no problems group, and was more likely to discuss psychological issues in their individual counseling sessions. The high problems group showed significant decreases in drug use and illegal activity in the first 3 months after admission and did not differ significantly from the no problems group on drug-positive urines or illicit activity at month 3. Within the high problems group, clients who attended at least two individual sessions per month reported less cocaine and speedball use during treatment than those who attended fewer sessions.

General population surveys suggest that the percentage of US women who drink declined slightly during the 1980s. Comparisons of 1981 and 1991 national surveys using the same drinking measures show that fewer women drank heavily in 1991, and women drinkers drank less frequently and had fewer episodes of heavy drinking, although younger drinkers reported more frequent intoxication. Longitudinal analyses of 5-year changes in drinking behavior indicate that movement both into and out of problem drinking is greatest among women aged 21 to 34. Subgroups of women with elevated rates of heavy drinking and/or adverse drinking consequences include younger women; women lacking social roles or occupying unwanted social statuses; women in nontraditional jobs; cohabiting women; and ethnic minority women experiencing rapid acculturation. Risks of heavy and/or problem drinking are also greater among women with a heavy-drinking husband or partner; depression; sexual dysfunction; or violent victimization in childhood or adulthood. Future research should focus on (1) the causes and consequences of recent declines in women's drinking; (2) antecedents and consequences of specific patterns of multiple substance use in women; (3) social and relational contexts of women's drinking, including occupational influences, drinking behavior of significant others, sexual dysfunction, and relationship violence; (4) longitudinal predictors of both problem drinking onset and "spontaneous" remission of women's alcohol problems; and (5) childhood sexual abuse as a potentially powerful risk factor for later alcohol abuse in women.

The author posits that overpopulation is a problem that can be solved only with an understanding of the natural environment and its interactions with people. The formation of a national Indian planning commission for population control is viewed as necessary for motivating all people to reduce population size. More statistics are needed in India on environmental measures and population. Man is part of nature, but not a master of nature. Water-borne diseases occur after flooding and earthquakes and when the drinking water supply is contaminated. Weather forecasting would be useful in preventing these diseases. Construction sites are reservoirs of infectious diseases and affect the natural environment. Environmental conditions must be monitored. Monitoring of environmental sanitation will help in forecasting epidemics and in curbing the negative affects on human physical, mental, and social well-being. Man alters the environment through such activities as urbanization, industrialization, deforestation, construction of dams and irrigation channels, and use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. New negative effects are occurring. Environmental degradation lowers economic status, which in turn contributes to poverty. Low income populations are more prone to crime, drug abuse, alcoholism, depression, and violence. The health status of an individual, community, or nation is a product of man's internal environment and the external natural environment, which can be physical, biological, and social. The biological environment includes viruses and disease producing agents, which struggle for their survival. The social environment includes customs, values, socioeconomic status, religion, standard of living, and political factors. Natural ecological regulation was suspended when man made technological advances. Scientific knowledge does not yet hold all the answers. Pollution is the result of progress in technology. Agricultural development has negative effects on the environment. Large population size contributes to the contamination of air, water, and agricultural areas. Demographic transition has been uneven in India.

The objective of this study was to identify major childhood events that were experienced by negligent mothers matched with non-negligent mothers as well as to define the existing link between those events, depression of the mother and parental stress. The sample was composed of 80 French-speaking Canadian families. The measures used were the Parental Stress Index (Abidin, 1983), the Psycho-Social Interview (Ethier et al., 1989) and the Beck Depression Inventory (1961). The results have shown an extreme level of parental stress and a high level a depression for negligent mothers. The negligent mothers had a history of placements, violence and sexual abuse, but they did not differ from control mothers for parental breakups and nonavailability. We have also shown a significant link between childhood events, depression, and parental stress even more so for the control group than for the negligence group. The results are discussed in the perspective of attachment theory.

Experts in the fields of child development, psychology, and criminology agree that family system variables play a key role in the development of delinquent and other deviant behaviors. Professionals in the field of substance abuse estimate that there may be at least 22 million children who have been or are currently being raised in homes with substance-abusing parents. Many studies have documented the relationships between being raised in such an environment and a variety of emotional and deviant characteristics. These individuals have been found to suffer from low self-esteem, depression, anger, and a variety of acting-out behaviors. This study investigated the differences between incarcerated juveniles from substance-abusing families and those from non-substances-abusing families. Significant differences were found in the areas of family violence, abuse; runaway, and self-reported substance abuse.

An excess mortality for violence (suicides and injuries) has been observed following the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs. It has been suggested that low cholesterol is associated with depression by modifying the serotonin metabolism. In this paper, a new hypothesis concerning the association among serum lipids, depression, and atherosclerosis is proposed. The hypothesis is based on epidemiologic evidence concerning serum lipids, depression, violent deaths, and atherosclerosis. It is also based on previous results concerning a cytokine, interleukin-2. Recent observations indicate that interleukin-2 has an important role in lipid metabolism, depression, and atherosclerosis.

Case histories of parricide by adolescents frequently reveal a history of abuse on the part of the victim and acute depression and suicidal ideation by the adolescent. This paper seeks to integrate an established concept of suicide as escape from "aversive self-awareness" through cognitive deconstruction with clinical observations of "projective-introjective cycling" of aggressive impulses, as a means of better understanding and preventing violence toward intimate others.

Although nurses may have the necessary skills to plan care of clients in a variety of settings, experience and research demonstrate that nursing interventions with women victims of violence have been consistently inadequate. Of the 243 nursing students included in this study, 8% reported experiencing physical abuse, and 18.9% reported experiencing nonphysical abuse. Difficulties with depression for 26.1% of the students and some level of clinical stress were reported in over half of the group. Specific needs to combat violence and abuse against nurses and nursing students include providing better information on such behavior by incorporating family-violence education into nursing-school curricula, and using this proactively in confronting domestic violence in home and work settings.

Many primary care physicians take care of lesbians and women sexually active with women without being aware of their patients' sexual orientation. These women have unique medical and psychosocial needs that each physician must consider. Lesbian identity or being sexually active exclusively with women influences care in areas such as sexually transmitted diseases, risk of human immunodeficiency virus infection, counseling, cancer risk, screening, parenting, depression, alcohol use, and violence. We review an approach to taking a history with all women that facilitates open, comfortable communication with lesbians. We also review specific medical and psychosocial areas of primary care in which caring for lesbians is different from caring for other women. Further research is needed on lesbian health issues to provide appropriate guidelines to clinicians.
