A 35-year-old woman had a 4-year history of skin
depression
on the right side of both the forehead and chin. A biopsy specimen showed a normal dermis and an absence of subcutaneous tissue. She also had
Poland syndrome
on the left side of the body, with loss of the sternocostal portion of the greater pectoral muscle. Significant cosmetic improvement was achieved with dermal fat grafts and silicone implants.

The present study compares admissions to mental hospitals in England in 1981 with comparable figures obtained for 1971. Patients were classified by place of birth and the two data sets reveal interesting similarities a decade apart. With schizophrenia the trend in 1981, as in 1971, is for the foreign born to have higher rates of admission in comparison to the native born; and as in 1971 the groups with the highest rate of admission are the Irish born and those born in the Caribbean and
Poland
. Overall rates of admission in 1981 for immigrants from India, Pakistan, Germany and Italy (like 1971) are lower than the native born rates. As in 1971 the Irish and Scots have extremely high rates of alcohol and drug related disorders, and although they also have high rates of personality disorders they are not as high as the 1971 rates. Those born in the Caribbean continue to show relatively low rates of admission for alcohol, drug and personality disorders. For Indian born males the 1981 figure for alcohol related admissions is twice that of 1971. There is an apparent increase in the rates of
depression
in 1981 compared to 1971 across all the groups which is affected by changes in recording procedures. There are other findings which are peculiar to only one sub-group, such as the very low re-admission rates for Pakistani women compared to the other groups. This paper provides some possible explanations to account for these variations in rates of admission.

Midwives do not play an apparent role in family planning and in avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Nevertheless, they should pay more attention to this problem, primarily in the case of women who are less knowledgeable about family planning. Induced abortion should not be a means of family planning since it has many harmful consequences. Different means of contraception have been known for centuries, but the social movement for ""birth control"" dates back only to the 19th century. The International Society of Family Planning was organized in the 1950s, while the idea of birth control in
Poland
arose only in 1956. Before the amendment on abortion was added to the Polish constitution, the annual number of illegal abortions was about 300,000. In the era of legal abortions it is the task of physicians and midwives to propagate other means of family planning. Induced abortion results in complications in 2%-5% when carried out in the first 6-7 weeks of pregnancy, in 5%-10% in weeks 8-12 and in 20% after the 13th week. One of the most frequent complications is psychogenic. Among the women involved in a study conducted by Kokoszka, 104 out of a total of 500 women reported for a follow-up examination. Disturbance in orgasm occurred in 45 cases, decrease of sexual desire in 48 cases, reduction of sexual drive in 73 cases, and nervousness in 14 cases. The risks of induced abortion are ranked as 1) sexual nervousness 2) clinically diagnosable pain 3) general and organic nervousness. W. Poltawska adds the following. Psychological complications:
depression
and feelings of guilt, aggression and auto aggression, and prolonged changes in personality.

Dantrolene, a skeletal muscle relaxant, has been proven prophylactic and therapeutic for malignant hyperthermia (MH) in swine. This study examined the feasibility of using a dantrolene dose response as measured by indirectly evoked foretoe twitch
depression
as a means to safely discriminate MH susceptibility in swine. The effect of halothane on the dantrolene response was quantified. Subjects were five
Poland
China malignant hyperthermia susceptible (MHS) and five Hampshire malignant hyperthermia resistant (MHR) swine. Dantrolene dose response was determined twice in each anaesthetized subject, once with thiopentone and subsequently with thiopentone and halothane. Dantrolene in incremental doses, 0.15 mg.kg-1, was given to a cumulative dose of 2--3 mg.kg-1. Under thiopentone anaesthesia, the dantrolene dose responses were similar in MHS and MHR animals. The presence of halothane augmented dantrolene twitch
depression
in MHS but not MHR animals when compared to their response under thiopentone. Under halothane, the MHS animals had significantly augmented dantrolene response compared to MHR pigs, but three MHS animals had developed the MH syndrome prior to receiving dantrolene. We conclude that dantrolene muscle relaxant dose response cannot be used as a diagnostic test for MHS in swine. Halothane augments dantrolene twitch
depression
in MHS swine.

The aim of the study was to evaluate how far women are satisfied with their family function to compare the obtained results with the perception of a global stress (S. Cohen PSS) by the women under study and their mental health (D. Goldberg GHQ-28). The study was aided by the Family APGAR Index (designed by G. Smilkstein) used for the first time in
Poland
. A group of women (n = 98; mean age = 38) with different levels of education and subdivided into four occupational categories was selected for the study. About 75% of women were married and 80% of them had children. The results obtained differ significantly as far as general assessment and individual indicators are concerned. In 16% of women, the results suggest a serious dysfunction of their families. There are distinct differences between individual occupational groups. The general assessment of family function was significantly correlated with the estimate of the global stress (-31), with the total estimate (-26), as well as with the individual indicators of mental health--especially anxiety and sleeplessness (-33) and
depression
(-29). Women's satisfaction from the function of their families has, therefore, proved to be a significant factor contributing to lower level of the global stress and constituting a barrier against the occurrence of mental health disturbances.

We evaluated humoral immunity by measuring IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE concentrations in 274 male workers in an iron foundry in Cracow,
Poland
. There were two groups: 199 coke oven workers and 76 cold-rolling mill workers. The groups were similar with respect to age, length of work (average 15 years), and smoking habits. Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), assessed by personal and area monitoring, ranged from 0.2 to 50 micrograms/m3 benzo[a]pyrene in coke plant workers and was of 3-5 magnitudes higher than in the cold-rolling mill employees. Comparison of the two groups revealed a marked
depression
of mean serum IgG and IgA in coke oven workers (p < 0.001, Student's unpaired t-test). In the same subjects, serum IgM had a tendency to decrease, whereas serum IgE showed a trend toward higher values. Thus, workers exposed chronically to complex mixtures of air pollutants, composed primarily of PAHs, develop immunosuppression. It remains to be established whether the immunosuppression described here is related to the frequent development of lung cancer reported in coke plant employees. Workers exposed chronically to PAHs should have serum immunoglobulins monitored regularly.

We describe a large family with hyperhomocysteinemia, the first to be reported in
Poland
. The proband's coronary complaints appeared at the age of 20, and by the age of 50 he had suffered extensive myocardial infarction. Examination of 17 persons from 4 generations revealed hyperhomocysteinemia in 2 daughters of the proband, while more discrete abnormalities were detected during methionine loading test in two other persons. Levels of cystathionone beta-syntetase and methyleno-FH4 reductase were normal in skin fibroblast culture. Treatment with folic acid and vitamin B12 led to 5-fold
depression
of plasma homocysteine in the proband, and complete normalization in the other treated member of the family.

The authors describe
Poland's anomaly
in a boy aged three years and four months, characterised by a
depression
in the right hemithorax caused by the absence of the medial extremity of the large pectoral muscle with hypoplasia of the remaining venter musculi. Moreover, the scan showed the absence of the small homolateral pectoral muscle. The vascular alteration of the subclavian artery and/or its branches during embryogenesis might be related, in this case, to the fact that the mother took sex hormones during the 6th and 7th week of gestation.

The article presents the results of comparison of 30 victims of political persecution in
Poland
in the years 1944-1956 (with a diagnosis of PTSD) with a control group in regard to the styles of interpersonal functioning, anxiety,
depression
and aggression. The examined persons manifest changes in the quality of social contacts--increased results on the scales of hostility syndrome, helplessness, and appeal for help, and decreased results on the scales examining pro-social tendencies. The examined persons are characterized by low affiliation, high level of indifference as well as features developed on the ground of anxiety: lack of self-acceptance, suspiciousness, aggression and negative self-evaluation in comparison with others. They are also characterized by high level of
depression
, readiness to react with fear or anxiety as the actual state during examination. These categories determine the psychological results of injuries suffered by the examined persons in the past.

Congenital chest wall deformities include five types: pectus excavatum (funnel chest), pectus carinatum (pigeon breast),
Poland's syndrome
, defects of sternal fusion, and miscellaneous dysplasias and skeletal disorders. Of these five types, two, pectus excavatum and
Poland's syndrome
, are defects of the skeletal chest wall. These two specific anomalies comprise the vast majority of congenital defects of the chest wall and, as
depression
deformities, are readily amenable to surgical correction.
