itself contributes to the immunodeficiency by multiple mechanisms. The powerful cytostatic-cytocidal drugs reduce the immune response also, especially in the phases of bone marrow

. Granulocytopenia shows the most significant correlation with the incidence of serious infections. The different forms of hospital infections have been reviewed and classified as 1. bacterial, fungal and, rarely, (but most dangerous) protozoal infections, 2. endogenous infections with the patient's own anaerobic intestinal flora and 3. viral infections. The perspectives of up-to-date chemotherapy and management of the immunodeficiency e.g. with leucocyte transfusions, and attempts to prevent infection are discussed.

Mycosis fungoides is a T-cell lymphoma which is often localized to the skin in the early stages. Untreated, the process eventually progresses through eczematous, plaque, and
tumor
stages to systemic involvement. Its course, however, is unpredictable. Topical chemotherapy is effective in early stages of mycosis fungoides. Possibly prognostic benefits can occur from the early use of these agents. Nitrogen mustard and BCNU, both alkylating agents, have been used topically to control the disease. A dermatitis may develop in persons treated with nitrogen mustard but systemic side-effects are rare. However, BCNU may rarely lead to marrow
depression
when used topically. The use of these agents in mycosis fungoides is discussed herein.

The hematologic manifestations of neuroblastoma are numerous and varied. Bone marrow invasion by

cells may cause leukoerythroblastic changes or
depression
of one or more of the cell lines in the peripheral blood; occasionally bone marrow involvement may be so extensive that
tumor
cells may be released into the peripheral blood and lead to an erroneous diagnosis of leukemia. Anemia in neuroblastoma patients may result not only from bone marrow involvement, but also from bleeding into a
tumor
mass or from the hemolysis accompanying a consumption coagulopathy. A specific morphologic abnormality, the cogwheel erythrocyte, has been reported in patients with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma may also be associated with elevation of the platelet count or a hypercoagulable state. Recognition of these protean hematologic manifestations may facilitate diagnosis in children with atypical presentations of this highly malignant tumor.

The radiological characteristics of intraventricular tumors were studied with special reference to differential diagnosis from paraventricular tumors by careful analysis of seven cases intraventricular tumors and five cases paraventricular tumors. As, in the radiological term, intraventricular tumors have been dividied into two groups according to their location by Bernasconi et al., seven cases intraventricular tumors reported in this paper were also divided into two groups; 1) 2 cases ependymom occupying the frontal horn and the body of lateral ventricle, 2) 4 cases meningioma and one plexus papilloma occupying the trigone and the adjucent regions. In case of tumors belonged to group 1, the filling defect showing the circumference of tumors and the associated unilateral hydrocephalus were characteristic findings on the ventriculogram, while the
depression
of ventricular wall was observed in paraventricular tumors. Angiographic characteristics in group 1 tumors were the splay of subependymal veins of the medial group from those of lateral group and the increased density of deep veins due to raised circulation, and these findings demonstrated in all cases of ependymoma reported here. On the other hand, in all meningiomas belonged to group 2, the hypertrophia of choridal arteries was noticed in the angiogram. Moreover, the anterior choroidal artery was shown to be divided into two branches at its plexal segments, and the
tumor
stain at the trigone always lied between these two branches. We named this dissociation of these two plexal branches due to
tumor
as "flare sing". This is considered to be specific finding for a trigone meningioma, and this "flare sing" was observed in all of our 4 cases meningioma. In two cases out of four, the inferior ventricular vein was displaced anteriorly delineating the anterior margin of the
tumor
. This again is considered as a sign indicating the
tumor
occupying the trigone and adjacent regions.

Radiotracer 67Ga-citrate is used as a
tumor
-seeking agent in clinical imaging investigations although fundamental reasons for its high uptake in certain malignant lesions remain unexplained. The mechanism by which 67Ga becomes concentrated in
tumor
cells has been investigated by comparing 67Ga and 59Fe uptake by cultured mouse myeloma cells with particular reference to uptake stimulation by transferrin. Concentrations of human transferrin down to 2 microgram/ml greatly stimulated cellular uptake of both tracers, whereas bovine transferrin proved relatively inactive. The rates of stimulated uptake of both tracers were similar as was their high degree of retention by cells, but their quantitative dependencies on transferrin concentration showed characteristic differences. Pretreatment of human transferrin with saturating amounts of nonradioactive Fe3+ canceled its ability to promote 59Fe uptake, but it had little effect on its promotion of 67Ga uptake. Further increase in the amount of added Fe3+ did cause a progressive
depression
of 67Ga uptake, but this effect probably relates to the iron distribution in the whole-cell culture system including the fetal calf serum component of cell growth medium. The results suggest that 67Ga and 59Fe reveal different aspects of the interaction of transferrin with cells.

The intracranial, liquid-containing cysts in children (excluding
tumor
and parasitic cysts) are relatively frequent in neurosurgical practice. They raise several problems about their nosology, etiology, clinical and radiological diagnosis, and treatment which are analyzed in a series of 36 cases of supratentorial cysts. The most frequent clinical feature is increased head circumference (22 cases) followed by epileptic fits (18 cases), as well as mental and motor retardation (19 cases). Fundi were found abnormal in only one case out of three. Electroencephalogram was abnormal in almost every case, showing either spikes, spikes and waves or localized slow waves, or an asymmetric
depression
of the electrical activity. Radiological investigation is essential for diagnosis. Plain radiographs of the skull may show an asymmetry (11 cases). Carotid angiogram and pneumoencephalography give the diagnosis of the lesion without accuracy as to the histology. Computerized axial tomography shows the position of the liquid cavity within the head. The surgical approach (simple shunting [6], direct approach [19], or both [7]) should be carefully considered according to anatomical variety and age of the child. An anatomical classification is proposed, based on the radiological, surgical and pathological findings. Three types of cysts are defined: external cysts (cortical or extracortical) which may or may not be communicating with the ventrioles or the subarachnoid space; internal cysts which again may or may not be communicating; and the corticoventricular cysts. The ultrastructural study represents further progress in the attempt to define the exact anatomical type.

With the appearance of micrometastases in the lungs there was a decline in the humoral and cellular immune response to the SRBC. An increase of number and size of metastases in the lungs led to a further

To assess the effects of radiotherapy on immune status, a wide range of assessments have been performed on patients with localized carcinoma of the cervix uteri undergoing and initially responding clinically to radical pelvic radiotherapy. Neutrophil function was essentially unchanged by treatment. Absolute neutrophil and lymphocyte counts fell after treatment and remained depressed 3 and 12 months following treatment. The proportions of T and B cells dropped with treatment but recovered to near-presentation levels during the follow-up period even though absolute counts remained depressed. In vitro tests of cellular immunity were depressed by treatment and remained so 3 and 12 months following treatment whereas skin test responses remained normal throughout the assessments. Inhibitory plasma effects were observed in phytohaemagglutinin lymphocyte transformation studies on 4 untreated patients; at follow-up these effects were not evident. A variable response in immune indices has therefore been observed in patients in remission after treatment of localized carcinoma cervix stressing the importance of assessing several aspects of immune function and implying that persistent
depression
of certain indices does not adversely affect the host
tumor
response. In two patients relapsing after apparently good initial response all aspects of immunological assessment (except serum immunoglobulin levels and neutrophil function) deteriorated.

A partially purified enterotoxin was obtained from the growth medium of Escherichia coli strain 711 (P307), a derivative of E. coli K-12, by ultrafiltration, precipitation with ammonium sulfate, molecular sieving, and anion exchange column chromatography. The active moiety, which is heat-labile, behaved like a protein particle of 180,000 to 200,000 daltons during molecular sieving and ultracentrifugation. During polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-PAGE), it dissociated into two subunits with apparent molecular weights of 68,000 to 70,000 and 14,000 to 15,000. SDS-PAGE after heating in SDS changed the larger subunit to an apparent molecular weight of about 40,000; the smaller subunit did not change. The intact particle induced rounding of the cells in Y-1 mouse adrenal

cells used for assay. The detergent-dissociated molecules were not active. Proteolysis of the purified toxin by tolylsulfonyl phenylalanyl chloromethyl ketone-trypsin appeared to enhance its activity. The addition of serum to the assay medium resulted in partial

of the activity. Activity was also abolished by preincubation of the toxin with either a rabbit antiserum to it or solutions containing GM1 ganglioside. The length of time needed to evoke a response in the assay system by fractions from different stages in the purification of the enterotoxin was a useful parameter in the evaluation of specific activity.
