The winter of 1981-1982 in Oxfordshire was unusually cold. During this winter, 18 patients with frostbite were referred to the Peripheral Vascular Service of the Nuffield Department of Surgery. The age-range was 52-83 years. None was diabetic. Seven were smokers. All had frostbite of either feet or fingers, sometimes of both. Patients could be divided into 2 groups based on the severity of their injury. In the first group 10 patients had mild injuries and were managed as outpatients. One patient had terminal phalanges amputated as a day case. Patients in this group had adequate homes and no associated medical disease. Eight patients in the second group had severe frostbite. All were socially disadvantaged and 4 had significant medical disease (mitral valve disease,
lymphoma
, alcoholism and
depression
). Because of social circumstances and because it takes time to establish the line of demarcation between healthy and dead tissue, all patients in this group were in hospital for a minimum of 2 months (range 2-10 months). Four patients required skin grafting and 2 needed special shoes to enable them to walk. There needs to be greater public awareness of the dangers and risks of cold injury.

This study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in the prevention of side effects due to anthracycline agents-Adriamycin (ADM) and Daunorubicin (DNR)-by comparing the preventive effect between CoQ10-treated and non-treated groups. The subjects were 79 patients, 55 of whom had malignant
lymphoma
. The age range was from 16 to 77 years with a mean age of 45.4 years. CoQ10 was administered by intravenous drip at 1 mg/kg/day the day before ADM or DNR administration, on the day and for a further 2 days after administration. In mean total dose, complete remission rate and mortality, no significant differences were observed between the 2 groups. Although there were also no significant differences in the degree of alopecia, fever, nausea and vomiting, the incidences of diarrhea and stomatitis were significantly (p less than 0.10 and p less than 0.05, respectively) reduced in the CoQ10-treated group.
Depression
of ST waves (more than 0.05 mV) and changes in T waves (R/10 greater than T, flat, inversion) on ECG were regarded as a parameter of aggravation. Such ECG aggravation was found in 20 of 40 patients given CoQ10 (50.0%) and in 18 of 25 receiving none (72.0%); a cardiotoxicity-inhibiting tendency was thus evident (p less than 0.10). In heart rate, tachycardia was noted in the nontreated group when the period of use of anthracycline agents exceeded 8 weeks. Twenty nine patients received ADM or DNR for 8 weeks or more, and, of them, 17 were treated with CoQ10; 11 of the 17 (64.7%) showed ECG aggravation, while 11 of 12 patients (91.7%) not treated with CoQ10 showed ECG aggravation. A tendency to depress ECG aggravation was thus observed in the treated group (p less than 0.10).

Depression
of the enzymatic reaction was observed immediately after the onset of the cytostatic treatment, its normalization between the cycles and after the full remission was reached. A remarkable and lasting decrease of the phosphatase positive lymphocytes and a change in the expression of the enzymatic reaction was noticed in the course of L-asparaginase administration. The presented investigations are the continuation of the authors' earlier studies on the positive correlation between the rosette test with neuraminidase treated sheep erythrocytes and the acid phosphatase activity in lymphoproliferative diseases.

The effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on the growth of allografted
lymphoma
cells in Balb/c mice were studied. It was determined that the injection of LPS at the time of graft implantation resulted in a transient proliferation and a delay in the rejection of the graft. This effect was not attributable to any enhancement of proliferation of the
lymphoma
cells by LPS nor to any activity of LPS as a competing antigen or as a polyclonal activator of antibody formation. The in vitro cytotoxicity of peritoneal macrophages from LPS-treated animals against allogeneic
lymphoma
cells was equal to that of mice not treated with LPS. In vitro proliferation responses of splenic lymphocytes from LPS-treated animals indicated that LPS treatment produced a differential

Eleven patients with leukemia and
lymphoma
were treated with 14 courses of E. coli L-asparaginase. Abnormalities of the coagulation screening tests and decreased fibrinogen levels were observed in all patients during treatment. Significant depressions of functional (mean 32%) and antigenic (mean 48%) antithrombin III were observed by day 14 of therapy. There was no laboratory evidence of intravascular coagulation during 11/14 courses of L-asparaginase. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis of plasma obtained at the antithrombin nadir did not demonstrate an abnormal pattern which can be associated with an abnormal antithrombin III or an increase in antithrombin III-coagulation factor complexes. The major underlying mechanism of this
depression
is believed to be decreased hepatic synthesis, and the low levels of antithrombin III may be associated with an increased risk of thrombosis.

The present report describes the genetic patterns of this type of natural resistance [hereafter called drug-resistant inhibition of tumors (DRIT) in various tumor-host combinations DRIT was evaluated measuring the extent of 125I-5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine (125IUdR) uptake in the spleen and liver of leukemic hosts. The results of the experiments performed with two H-2d (i.e. L1210 and LSTRA), one H-2b (i.e. L5MF-22) and one H-2a (i.e. LAF-17) lymphomas inoculated into drug-treated recipients pointed out that: (a) tumor cell proliferation was markedly inhibited in the spleen and weakly or not impaired in the liver of D end Hh-1-incompatible euthymic or nude mice responder for the hh system; (b) no resistance was found in the spleen and liver of Hh-1-compatible B10.A (2R) mice against L5MF-22

or of SJL recipients genetically non-responder for the Hh system, against LSTRA cells; (c) splenic resistance against L1210 leukemia was detectable in Hh-compatible B10.A or B10.A (5R) mice; (d) splenic and liver resistance was found in Hh-incompatible but genetically Hh non-responder SJL or C3H mice against L5MF-22 or LSTRA lymphomas, respectively. Immune dysfunction seems to be more common in lymphoproliferative disorders wherein the malignant cells originate from the immune system itself. The reaction of Dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and six recall antigens were found to be diminished in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas as compared to control subjects (P less than 0.005). The skin reactivity was lost in increasing order in well differentiated, poorly differentiated, and histiocytic types. The

in delayed hypersensitivity was greater with generalized as compared to localized disease. In angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AIL), skin tests also showed negative response in 7 of 8 patients. This T-cell dysfunction in a preneoplastic condition (AIL) suggests early appearance of immunodeficiency and probably a prerequisite for the development of a
lymphoma
. The serum immunoglobulin levels failed to show any relation with respect to histology or extent of disease. Presumably, the alteration of IgG is secondary to a malignancy.
