MMPI profile patterns were compared between combat veteran groups of 168 POW survivors and 67 servicemen who were not war captives in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Results confirm previous reports that the scales, Hypochondriasis (Hs),
Depression
(D), and
Hysteria
(Hy), are characteristically elevated among former POWs. Findings also point to the contribution of scales, Psychasthenia (Pt), Paranoia (Pa), and Ego Strength (Es), in differentiating groups, suggesting that negative ruminations, heightened anxiety, interpersonal anger and suspiciousness, and low self-esteem contribute significantly to group differentiation.

In the development and evaluation of a multi-ethnic inventory (the BSI) of somatic symptoms associated with anxiety and
depression
, symptoms were derived from psychiatric case notes of Pakistani and indigenous British patients with a clinical diagnosis of anxiety,
depression
,
hysteria
or hypochondriasis. The inventory was constructed simultaneously in Urdu and English. A pilot version of the BSI was checked against psychiatric case notes in north and south India, and Nepal. The revised BSI achieved over 90% coverage of all somatic symptoms recorded in each centre. The linguistic equivalence of the Urdu and the English versions was established in a bilingual student population in Pakistan. Conceptual equivalence of the BSI was explored using factor analysis of responses by functional patients presenting to medical clinics in Britain and Pakistan. Four principal factors (head, chest, abdomen, fatigue) were similar in both populations.

The outcome of care in a special care burn unit and a traditional burn ward in the Main University Hospital in Alexandria was assessed in terms of length of hospital stay, psychoneurotic status, and satisfaction of patients. The study population comprised 38 consecutive admissions to the traditional ward and 37 consecutive admissions to the special care unit. Results indicated that the outcome of care was more favourable for patients treated in the special care unit. The length of hospital stay was significantly shorter for the special care unit group. Based on the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire, the levels of anxiety, phobia, psychosomatic complaints,
depression
and
hysteria
were significantly higher for the traditional ward group. The level of overall satisfaction, as well as the levels of satisfaction with physical conditions, staff responsiveness, and visiting regulations, were significantly higher for the special care unit group.

MMPI profiles of 185 Pacific Bell employees referred for psychological evaluation were compared to a sample of 200 seen for psychiatric evaluation related to Workers' Compensation litigation. In both samples, an almost identical percentage of MMPI profiles reflected significant psychopathology (85% vs. 83%). In the Pacific Bell sample, there were almost twice as many MMPIs of questionable validity (16%) as in the Worker's Compensation study (7%). The most striking finding is that the same five two-point Code-Types were the most frequently occurring in both samples; they accounted for about half of the profiles in each study. Three of these Code-Types, 12/21, 13/31, and 23/32, which involve the Hypochondriasis,
Depression
, and
Hysteria
scales, represented 38% of the Workers' Compensation and 26% of the Pacific Bell samples. These three Code-Types are characteristic of somatization of psychogenic complaints.

The present study evaluated changes in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) profile levels of chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients following successful treatment for their disability. A total of 69 patients were evaluated at admission and 6 months after completing the treatment program. Results demonstrated significant decreases of the
Hysteria
,
Depression
, and Hypochondriasis scales toward normal ranges at the 6-month evaluation. These results indicate that MMPI profile levels of CLBP patients are significantly reduced to normal ranges following successful treatment.

There are no correlations between MMPI
Hysteria
(Hs) and
Depression
(D) scales in psychosomatic patients in contrast to other patients with somatic disturbances, neurotic disturbances, and in healthy subjects. The roles of
depression
and hypochondria in the dynamics of psychosomatic disturbances are discussed according to the search activity concept. It is suggested that hypochondriacal complaints are prognostically favorable in comparison with anxiety-
depression
complaints.

In the present paper, the results are summarized of MMPI measurements in 210 cases of neurosis. They, by the criteria of Chinese T score, show an increase in the scales 1, 2, 3 and 7 and have an identical rate of 87.5%. Hence, it is reasonable for the scales above to be designated as the coding model of neurosis. In every type of neurosis the scales 1, 2, 3 and 7 have a tendency to increase, but there is a slight difference in their highest point and kurtosis. In
depression
neurosis, neurasthenia and anxiety neurosis the scale 2 (D) increases dominantly; in
hysteria
, the scale 3 (HY); in hypochondria, the scale 1 (HS); in phobic and compulsion neurosis, the scale 7. Therefore, MMPI measurements can be useful for clinical classification of neurosis.

Hypochondriacal and hysteroid personalities are considered the extreme variants of defined emotional and motivational dimensions. The hysteroid personality is mainly characterized by a strong need for social attention and respect as well as by a lack of emotional genuiness. For the diagnosis of hypochondriacal and hysteroid personality tendencies, a Hypochondria-
Hysteria
Inventory was developed and employed in 13 different samples with a total of 1206 persons. The index scores of the individual degrees of hypochondriacal and hysteroid tendencies were demonstrated to be of sufficient reliability. There was no important relationship between the individual degrees of hypochondriacal and hysteroid tendencies. Hypochondriacal tendencies are significantly correlated with general anxiety, neuroticism,
depression
, inhibition and psychasthenia as well as with a general negative self-concept. There is only a weak and partial significant relationship to the degree of introversion. The intensity of hypochondriacal tendencies increases with age. Hysteroid personality tendencies are significantly associated with extraversion, a certain degree of aggressiveness as well as with unconcern and sociability. The intensity of hysteroid tendencies in older adults is lower than in adolescents and young adults.

Clinical impression suggests that many cases of detrusor instability are psychosomatic. We evaluated 63 women with urinary incontinence and 27 continent controls using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Uplift and Hassle Scales, and a structured questionnaire screening sexual dysfunction. All incontinent women underwent diagnostic urodynamic studies including uroflowmetry, subtracted water cystometry with provocation, and urethral closure pressure profilometry. Thirty-five women had genuine stress incontinence and 28 had detrusor instability, including nine with mixed incontinence. No differences in psychological test results were noted between the detrusor-instability and genuine-stress-incontinence groups. On the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, subjects with detrusor instability scored significantly higher than controls on the hypochondriasis (P = .006),
depression
(P = .01), and
hysteria
(P = .0009) scales. Compared with continent controls, the detrusor-instability group reported a lower frequency of uplifts (P less than .05) and a greater intensity of hassles (P less than .05). Both incontinent groups reported more sexual dysfunction than did controls. We conclude that many women with urinary incontinence have abnormal psychological and sexual test results reflecting moodiness, feelings of helplessness and sadness, pessimism, general hypochondriasis/somatization, and sexual dysfunction. These abnormalities appear to be associated with urinary incontinence in general rather than with specific diseases of the urinary tract.

The authors studied the Personality and Aggressiveness of fifty-three cancer patients by using MMPI and the Instrument I for the Aggressiveness Measurements. The common characteristics in all of then were that they suffered solid tumors, were submitted to hospital treatments and had an absence of psychiatric illness in their personal history. Among the results that stand out most is the sensations of change that the patients experience due to their own illness, the hospitalization and the treatments which they undergo. There exists on increase of self-aggressiveness or a decrease of hetero-aggressiveness which predominates the scales of
depression
and social introversion, with a decrease of inner strength. In any case, the neuroticism and the dependence are increased and there are decreases in the scales of psychopathic deviation and domination. The four psychosis is staying normal, the
hysteria
is decreased in men and the hypochondria is increased in women. The defence mechanism that predominates are the denial and the avoidance reaction.
