The first percutaneous vertebroplasty, used to treat a painful cervical haemangioma, was performed by a French team in 1984 and reported in the literature in 1987. This technique has rapidly become the standard of care for treatment of medically refractory painful vertebral compression fractures. Vertebral fractures usually become evident because of pain of varying intensity that reduces the patient's quality of life, producing functional limitations, depression, disability, height loss, spinal instability and kyphotic deformity associated with impaired lung capacity. Many diseases may underlie vertebral compression fractures, such as osteoporosis, trauma, neoplasms and haemangioma. Vertebroplasty, as derived from our experience and a review of the literature data, has more than 70%-90% effectiveness for short-term pain reduction and return to activity. The aim of this paper was to describe the state of the art of this spinal interventional radiology procedure and to examine the future directions of percutaneous vertebroplasty.

An 11-year-old, castrated male beagle dog was presented with a sudden onset of clinical signs of depression, abdominal discomfort, anorexia and melena. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed a well-circumscribed mass lesion with a size of 5 cm in diameter at the hypogastrium. A complete blood count and blood chemistry revealed severe anemia, hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. Through celiotomy, a large tumor mass involving the ileum was resected. The inside of the mass was irregular and sponge-like structure with multiple cavitated structures. On histology, the lesion was diagnosed to be hemangioma of the ileal wall. To the best of our knowledge, this unusual case is the first clinical report on the ileal hemangioma in non-human animal species.

A case of epithelioid hemangioma of the duodenum causing bleeding was encountered. A 32-year-old man was admitted because of anemia. Endoscopic examination revealed a submucosal tumor with central depression in the 2nd portion of the duodenum. It was considered to be the bleeding focus of anemia. A partial resection of the duodenum was performed. The macro- and microscopic examination of the specimen revealed an epithelioid hemangioma. Hemangiomas of the intestinal tract are rare, representing only 0.3% of all tumors of the intestinal tract, and among them, hemangiomas of the duodenum are extremely rare, representing only 3.4% of those of the intestinal tract. Most hemangiomas of the duodenum are cavernous hemangiomas or capillary hemangiomas. We report the first case of epithelioid hemangioma of the duodenum.

A woman aged 60 years developed a Millard-Gubler syndrome after a diagnosis of a cavernous angioma in the median and paramedian areas of the pons. In this context, she presented a right VI nerve palsy, right conjugate gaze palsy, facial palsy and left hemiparesis. To improve the complete VI nerve palsy, we planned a modified transposition approach, in which procedure we made a partial transposition of vertical rectus with a silicone band that was fixated posteriorly. After the procedure, the patient gained the ability to slightly abduct the right eye. We found no compensatory torticollis in the primary position of gaze. There was also an improvement of elevation and depression movements of the right eye. We obtained satisfactory results with a theoretically reversible technique, which is adjustable intraoperatively with no need of muscle detachment, preventing anterior segment ischaemia and allowing simultaneous recession of the medial rectus muscles, if necessary.

Cerebral cavernous angioma or cavernoma is a benign vascular malformation, usually asymptomatic. It is infrequent and often its discovery is incidental, a so-called incidentaloma. However, these lesions can be symptomatic, causing headaches, epilepsy, cerebral hemorrhage and other neurological signs depending on the brain area involved. Frontal localization is responsible for psychiatric disorders, particularly the prefrontal region, leading to prefrontal syndrome, a condition common in all frontal lobe tumors. Psychopathological syndrome can be depression-type, pseudodepression syndrome or maniac-type, pseudomaniac syndrome. Surgical treatment of lesions like this may not always be possible due to their location in eloquent areas. In this study, we describe an unusual association of migraine-like headache, epilepsy and frontal lobe pseudodepression late-onset syndrome in the same patient. We have considered this case interesting mainly for the rarity of both a headache with migraine features and for the late onset of pseudodepression syndrome. Pathophysiology underlying migraine-like headache and that concerning the late-onset pseudodepression frontal lobe syndrome seems to be unclear. This case leads to further hypotheses about the mechanisms responsible for headache syndromes and psychopathological disorders, in the specific case when caused by a cerebral frontal lobe lesion.

Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) was isolated in meat-type breeder chickens for the first time in 1988 in the United Kingdom. Due to the application of an eradication program, there were fewer reports related to myelocytomatosis or ALV-J in China after 2013. However, there was another breakout almost simultaneously in six provinces of China in February 2018. On-site, 15- to 20-week-old broiler breeder chickens showed depression, paralysis and weight loss. Mortality for certain flocks reached 15%. Sick chickens showed numerous yellow-white neoplasms growing in the sternum, rib and lumbar vertebra and had hepatic and renal metastasis. Histopathological observation showed all neoplasms were myelocytomas, and there were massive myelocyte-like tumour cells in the liver, kidney and bone marrow. To explore the aetiology of this re-outbreak of myelocytomatosis in China, we collected tumour-bearing chickens and isolated six strains of ALV-J (GM0209-1 to -6). Phylogenetic analysis of gp85 and gp37 showed GM0209 strains were clearly distinct from the prototype strain of ADOL-7501, HPRS-103 and NX0101, and there was a mutation, R176G, in the conserved region between hr1 and hr2 regions of gp85, which was not found in other 44 ALV-J strains. The 3'UTR nucleotide sequences of GM0209 isolates showed there was a signature deletion of 11 nt that was also present in 3'UTR sequences of SCDY1 and NHH, two isolates that have a reported association with haemangioma, indicating this deletion could not determine the tumour type induced by ALV-J. Although the eradication program of ALV-J has been successfully applied in China, the outbreak of ALV-J still occurred, and the virus strain spread quickly. Thus, the biocharacteristics and pathogenesis of mutational ALV-J should be further studied.
