patients, pneumonia in an early (20%) and a late (3.5%) period, pythorax except for leakage (8%) and pulmonary tuberculosis (1.4%) were observed characteristically through the post operative course. Changes in cellular immunity through the course were indicated with remarkable
depression
of PHA stimulation index (s.i.) and T cell number. The lowest values during 5-year survey were observed 2 weeks after surgery. Especially, cases with post operative pulmonary infections had low PHA s.i. and low T cell number for long time, different from cases without them. As regards T cell subsets, both helper T and suppressor T decreased dramatically early after surgery and helper T kept in low value for long time, in contrast to suppressor T returned to normal range gradually, and then H/S ratio also depressively changed. Therefore, suppressive immunity after surgery must result in pulmonary infections and cause critical conditions. Cases with well reacted lymphocytes indicated high 5 year survival rate (40%).

Polyphenols in cereals and legumes have been receiving considerable attention largely because of their adverse influence on color, flavor, and nutritional quality. These compounds belong to the flavonoid and tannin groups and are mostly located in the seed coat or pericarp of the grains. The pearl millet flavonoids have been identified as C-glycosylflavones by the combined use of paper chromatography and UV spectroscopy. Although nontoxic, physiological and nutritional significance of these compounds occurring in high amounts in the pearl millet grain are still not clearly understood. In view of aesthetic quality, bleaching of the millet grains in acidic solution is recommended. A large proportion of current assays involves spectrophotometry of tannin or its chromogen and tannin-protein interaction. Sorghum and legume tannins have been characterized as condensed tannins. Several factors such as plant type, age of the plant or plant parts, stage of development, and environmental conditions govern the polyphenol contents in plants. Polyphenols are known to interact with proteins and form tannin-protein complexes leading to either inactivation of enzymes or making proteins insoluble. These are implicated in decreasing the activities of digestive enzymes, protein and amino acid availabilities, mineral uptake, vitamin metabolism, and
depression
of growth. Polyphenols are known to cause certain ultrastructural changes in the different parts of experimental animals. A correlation between dietary tannins and occurrence of
esophageal cancer
has been established. Bird resistance and seed germination in food crops have been correlated to high contents of polyphenols. The antinutritional activity of polyphenols can be reduced by removing polyphenols from the grains by chemical treatments or removing pericarp and testa by pearling. Treatment of alkaline reagents and ammonia can remove 90% of the polyphenols. Supplementation of polyphenols-rich diet with protein can alleviate the growth-depressing effect of polyphenols.

Serum total protein, albumin and fibronectin were maintained at the same levels as those in controls when multiple units of fresh frozen plasma and albumin products were employed. All of the patients who underwent elective surgery were given epidural anesthesia with or without general anesthesia. Antipsychotic medications were given until just prior to surgery and recommenced concurrent with the first meal. Abnormal behavior was observed in 11 patients (52.4%) postoperatively, but all the patients were discharged in accordance with recovery from their surgical disorder. Intra- and postoperative hypotension resistant to intravenous catecholamine administration was recognized in 9 patients (42.9%), and this peculiar complication should be borne in mind when patients with psychiatric disorders require surgical management.

The study examined the effects of combination of hyperthermia (42 degrees C) and 290 MeV/u carbon-ion (C-) beams or 200 kVp X-rays on tumour regrowth delay of transplantable human
esophageal cancer
as an in vivo model for radiotherapy of cancer. The C-beams were more effective in the tumour growth inhibition than X-rays. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of C-beams against X-rays was 2.00. It was observed that the interactive hyperthermic (42 degrees C, for 30 min) enhancement of tumour regrowth delay by high-linear energy transfer (LET) C-beams was similar to that of combination of low-LET X-rays with hyperthermia. The thermal enhancement ratios (TER) were 6.10 and 5.57 for X-rays and C-beams, respectively. These results suggest that hyperthermic treatment is effective in radiotherapy not only by low-LET radiation but also by high-LET radiation such as C-beams. In conclusion, the
depression
of the tumour growth by the combined treatment of hyperthermia (42 degrees C) and the C-beams strongly suggests the available possible application of interdisciplinary cancer therapy for refractory tumours.

The aims of this study were to prospectively evaluate gastric function in
esophageal cancer
patients after chemoradiotherapy and following surgery, using cutaneous electrogastrography (EGG). Twenty-three patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma were recruited to the study. A subset of patients (n = 11) underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and were also studied at 14 days after treatment. All patients underwent EGG studies prior to and following surgery, at 3 months postoperatively. Ten of these patients were also studied at medians of 6 months and 12 months after surgery. Twenty normal volunteers were used as controls. Post-operative EGG studies were monitored with a modified technique; the electrodes being placed in the subscapular region in the area of the transposed stomach. Following neoadjuvant treatment there was a significant increase in abnormal gastric myoelectrical activity involving changes in tachygastrias and decreased motility as measured by power ratio. Post-operatively there was a significant increase in bradygastria which persisted at 6 months but not at 12 months. There was a corresponding decrease in normogastria which persisted at 6 months and to a lesser extent at 12 months. Dominant frequency remained significantly depressed at 3, 6 and 12 months. This study prospectively assessed dyspnea and related bio-psycho-social-spiritual factors--including severity, cause, psychological distress, and fear of death--that were possibly related to dyspnea in 125 terminal cancer patients at admission and two days before their death. At admission, 74 patients had dyspnea, which improved but later worsened. Causes included cachexia, anemia, pleural effusion, and lymphangitis. Quality of life, anxiety,

, and fear of death improved after admission; anxiety was correlated with dyspnea before death (r = 0.211, P < 0.05, univariate analysis). in lead V(2-3) on the electrocardiogram (ECG). Coronary angiography revealed no stenosis. Drainage of the fluid in the gastric tube resulted in immediate relief of symptoms and normalization of ECG. Angina-like chest pain associated with ST segment changes were caused by expansion of the gastric tube and compression of the heart.
