Recently developed techniques for the investigation of iron kinetics were used to study the disturbance of iron metabolism in 19 untreated patients with Hodgkin's diseases (HD). The erythroid abnormality in newly diagnosed HD appears to be confined to those patients with systemic symptoms of weight loss, night sweats and fever, and consists of
depression
of marrow erythroid activity. These patients had a significnatly lower haemoglobin and serum iron concentration and a higher serum ferritin concentration, both when compared to normal subjects and to those patients with HD who lacked systemic symptoms. Ineffective erythropoiesis and red-cell destruction were not significantly increased. The present findings, confirm that HD patients with systemic symptoms have a
depression
of erythropoiesis, and that in these patients the marrow fails to respond to the stimulus of mild
anaemia

Nickel toxicity was studied in young chicks fed a semi-purified diet. Dietary nickel concentrations of 300 mg/kg and higher resulted in significant reduction in growth rate. Mortality and
anemia
were observed in chicks receiving 1100 mg/kg nickel. Dietary nickel content of 300 mg/kg resulted in a significant increase in kidney nickel content while higher dietary levels were required to affect the nickel content of other body tissues. Supplementation of nickel toxic diets (500 mg/kg) with 100 mg/kg of cobalt, iron, copper, and zinc did not alleviate the symptoms of nickel toxicity or consistently affect tissue nickel accumulation. The addition of cobalt resulted in a further
depression
in growth rate when added to the nickel toxic diet. However, subsequent studies showed that this was due to the toxicity of cobalt and no evidence was found for an interaction between these two elements. The lack of interaction of nickel with copper, iron, and zinc is in contrast to the results observed by other investigators at low dietary concentrations of nickel.

This study investigated the relationship between 59 Fe absorption and the
anemia
associated with aflatoxicosis in commercial broilers. A level of 0 or 5 micrograms of aflatoxin per gram of diet was fed for a 21 day period beginning at 1, 7, 14, or 21 days of age in each of two trials. Packed cell volume (PCV) and percent retention of an oral dose of 59 Fe were determined. The feeding of aflatoxin resulted in an
anemia
when fed from 0 to 3 or 1 to 4 weeks of age. At the conclusion of these treatment periods, percent 59 Fe retention was significantly reduced from the controls. Aflatoxin when fed from 2 to 5 weeks of age resulted in a slight but significant
depression
in PCV (P less than .05) with a slight but nonsignificant
depression
in percent 59 Fe retention. At the conclusion of the 3 to 6 week treatment period both percent iron retention and PCV were greater than controls but not significantly so. The iron retentions of birds separated into high and low PCV groups within each treatment combination were compared. Although the iron retentions of the low PCV groups were lower than those of the high PCV groups, none of the differences were statistically significant. However, Pearson correlations of PCV with percent 59 Fe retention were - .28 (P less than or equal to .02, n = 69) for control birds and - .19 (P less than or equal to .14, n = 58) for birds fed aflatoxin, suggesting a relationship between PCV and iron absorption.

Anemia
in neuroblastoma patients may result not only from bone marrow involvement, but also from bleeding into a tumor mass or from the hemolysis accompanying a consumption coagulopathy. A specific morphologic abnormality, the cogwheel erythrocyte, has been reported in patients with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma may also be associated with elevation of the platelet count or a hypercoagulable state. Recognition of these protean hematologic manifestations may facilitate diagnosis in children with atypical presentations of this highly malignant tumor.

Canine ehrlichiosis was successfully transmitted from the domestic dog to three Wild Dogs Lycaon pictus and three Black-backed Jackals Canis mesomelas. Wild Dogs showed symptoms of anorexia and

as well as

, leucopaenia and mild thrombocytopaenia. Black-backed Jackals were asymptomatic. Morulae of Ehrlichicia canis were found in peripheral blood smears from all experimental animals. The disease was also successfully transmitted from Black-backed Jackal to the domestic dog.

23 patients whose weight varied from ninety-eight to 220 kilos were subjected to four different types of jejuno-ileal by pass operations: terminal-lateral (14 X 4) in three, terminal-terminal (14 X 4) in fifteen, (12 X 8) in two, and (10 X 8) in three. The defunctionalized intestine was anastomized to the transverse colon. Liver, jejenum and ileal biopsies as well as profilactic apendectomy were performed in all the cases along with colecistectomy when possible. All our patients were carefully studied in the pre and postoperative periods. The postoperative follow-up varied from 16 to 72 months, during which time a short and long-term mortality of 8.6% was observed. In eight patients it was necessary to reestablish normal intestinal transit for one or two reasons: rapid weight loss or total lack of patient cooperation. During the first few months post-op, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of apetite, weakness, inactivity,
depression
, electrolyte anormalities,

and increased hepatic esteatosis were the clinical and pathological findings most frequently encountered. With the cooperation of the patient it is possible to correct all these alterations: it is for this reason that the importance of right patient selection is emphasized. The rate of post-operative weight loss varied from patient to patient with an ideal weight being achieved between 18 and 24 months after the operation. Only in those patients reoperated upon to establish normal intestinal transit was the lost weight recuperated. Along with rigid patient selection, the success of this operation depends upon interspecialty teamwork during the preoperative evaluation as well as the follow up period in order to resolve the intricate physio-pathological problems that so frequently arise.

Bone marrow cells from two patients with primary acquired sideroblastic
anaemia
were studied using the technique of electron microscope autoradiography. Whereas a significant proportion of erythroblasts containing small to moderate quantities of intramitochondrial deposits incorporated [3H]thymidine into DNA, the majority of cells containing large quantities of intramitochondrial deposits did not. These results are consistent with the idea that several of the early polychromatic cells with large quantities of deposits become arrested in their progress through the cell cycle. The data also revealed that the accumulation of increasing quantities of iron-containing material within the mitochondria of an erythroblast was frequently (but not invariably) associated with and was possibly responsible for (I) a
depression
of RNA synthesis and (2) a more marked
depression
of protein synthesis. A small proportion of the erythroblasts showing a
depression
of protein synthesis also displayed various non-specific ultrastructural abnormalities indicative of cellular injury such as the presence of intranuclear clefts, nuclear membrane-associated myelin figures and lipid-laden intracytoplasmic vacuoles.

in a 7 year old Quarter-horse mare were studied. Clinical signs included
depression
, disorientation, circling, knuckling at the fetlock and hypermetria. The neuropathologic lesions were characterized by a granulomatous ependymitis, subependymal encephalitis, choroiditis and hydrocephalus. These lesions were associated with signs of neurologic dysfunction which were the cause of the prominent clinical features.

The bone marrow cells of a patient with congenital dyserythropoietic
anaemia
, type II, were incubated with 3H-thymidine, 3H-uridine or 3H-leucine for 1 h and studied using the technique of electron microscope autoradiography. Several of the erythroblasts which either displayed the characteristic subsurface double membranes or showed various non-specific abnormalities of the nuclear membrane were found to be actively engaged in DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. Both members of some pairs of erythroblasts which were joined together by a spindle bridge were found to be engaged in DNA synthesis, indicating that some spindle bridges persist for a period longer than the duration of the G1 phase. A small proportion of mononucleate and binucleate late (non-dividing) erythroblasts showed a marked

or arrest of protein synthesis and some or all of such cells were presumably destined to be phagocytosed by the bone marrow macrophages.

Malaria-induced immunosuppression has been demonstrated in humans and experimental animals. The suppressed immune response has been suggested to be primarily humoral and not cellular in nature, since classical lymphocytic cell-mediated responses have been reported to be normal. Since previous results have demonstrated that an impairment in macrophage antigen processing may be a contributing factor in malaria-induced immunosuppression, the present studies were conducted to determine if the macrophage/reticuloendothelial system (RES) alteration occurs parallel to the course of the malarial infection and if the impairment in antibody formation is temporally related to the RES alteration. The present study has demonstrated that a profound impairment in splenic direct plaque forming cell (PFC) formation occurs in malaria-infected Balb/c mice which had been immunized with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) either 2 or 4 days after inoculation with Plasmodium berghei, NYU-2 strain. Serum hemagglutinin titers were significantly depressed in mice which received the SRBC 4 days post-inoculation; however, no alterations in antibody titers were observed in mice immunized with SRBC 2 days post-inoculation. Coincident with the
depression
of serum antibody titers at the day 4 immunization period was a profound increase in the vascular clearance of 51Cr-SRBC with an enhanced hepatic uptake of the 51Cr-SRBC and a decreased splenic localization of the labelled erythrocytes. It is suggested that a direct vascular exposure of the splenic lymphoid-macrophage elements to the parasite may be responsible for the initial early alterations in the PFC response while the impairment in serum antibody titers and splenic phagocytic activity may be a result of the pathological alterations occurring later in the infection, e.g., tissue anoxia,
