of the interfacial fluid in order to oppose the forces of pulling. As a summary, it is important to achieve the formation of a salivary meniscus: with the smallest curvature; continuous despite the mobility of the mucosa; beyond the limit between the free mucosa and the attached mucosa and the "farthest" possible from this area. The purpose of recording the periphery borders is to obtain the highest and widest possible denture flanges without any over-extension or over-thickness. The authors then propose performing a comparative study of the various materials available for recording the periphery of maxillary full dentures, in order to determine which best responds to the criteria of quality mentioned. Several recording techniques are possible, depending on the material used: either a segmented border recording (widely described); or a recording of the periphery seal in one or several stages which is then illustrated by the use of Impregum. For each patient, recordings of the periphery was made according to a protocol always identical and precise; only the material used for this purpose (Kerr compound, regular Neo-Plex and Impregum) varied. The measure taken from these recordings showed that Impregum demonstrates the highest and thickness borders as opposed to Neo-Plex and Kerr compound which provided intermediary results. , random migration and chemotactic migration, phagocytosis, and spontaneous nitroblue tetrazolium-dye reduction (NBT) capacity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) were analysed in 38 patients with ulcerative colitis before and during therapy with sulphasalazine (12 months), corticosteroids (6 months), levamisole (12 months), ascorbic acid (6 months) and sulphasalazine plus levamisole (12 months). Remission was achieved by levamisole in as many patients as by sulphasalazine and by sulphasalazine and levamisole used together. Nevertheless, the only function of PMNs affected by levamisole therapy was a
depression
of chemotaxis, whereas other functions as well as chemotaxis were altered by sulphasalazine, whether used alone or in combination with levamisole. Of patients treated with corticosteroids, all were in remission at 6 months and the most marked decrease in chemotaxis was seen. No clinical benefits were observed after 6 months of treatment with ascorbic acid and PMNs function was unaltered. The
depression
of chemotaxis occurred whether or not remission was achieved, suggesting a direct drug-induced effect. The apparent discrepancies of the "in vivo" drug effects in comparison with previously reported findings may reflect abnormal reactivity of PMNs in UC.

Clinical findings for 5 new cases of colonic perforation in corticosteroid-treated dogs were presented and 8 other cases from the literature were reviewed. Colonic perforation was a fatal complication in all 13 dogs, 12 of which had had recent major surgery. Ten dogs were neurosurgical patients, 1 dog received medical therapy for head trauma and nonambulatory paresis, and 2 dogs were operated on for non-neurologic conditions. Dexamethasone was the most frequently used corticosteroid, and 12 dogs received a mean cumulative dose of 6.4 mg/kg over an average period of 5.1 days.
Depression
, anorexia, and emesis, the most frequent signs attending colonic perforation, became evident 3 to 8 days after surgery. Signs preceded death by an average of 22.3 hours. Correct antemortem diagnosis (5 dogs) and surgical intervention (3 dogs) had no effect on eventual outcome (mortality = 100%). Colonic perforation most frequently developed in the proximal descending portion and always involved the antimesenteric border. Gross fecal contamination of the peritoneal cavity and acute generalized peritonitis were evident in all but one dog.
Adhesions
were observed at the lesion site in 6 dogs, but prevented gross soilage in only one dog.

The

of focal fibrinolytic activity in mesothelial or serosal tissues which results from a surgical ischemic insult can lead to the formation of permanent fibrinous adhesions. To assess the time course for the prevention of adhesion formation by recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA), infusions of rt-PA were administered to rabbits every 12 hr for a total of 1, 2, 4, or 8 days. Animals in each rt-PA treatment group received a total cumulative dose of 16 mg. Control animals received saline with the same corresponding dosing regimens as the treated groups. Prior to dosing, all animals had a devascularizing injury to the uterine horns performed bilaterally by bipolar cauterization of the uterine mesenteric vascular arcade below the horns. A catheter was then placed from a subcutaneous port to the intraperitoneal space. rt-PA, or saline, was instilled intraperitoneally via the subcutaneous port.
Adhesions
were scored at the second laparotomy by assessing the percentage of the involvement of the uterine horns in adhesions. Mean score for adhesion formation in each placebo group was 35 to 40%. Mean score (+/- standard error of the mean) for rt-PA after 1 day of therapy was 13.1% +/- 3.89; after 2 days of therapy, 6.3% +/- 1.57; after 4 days of therapy, 3.8% +/- 1.57; and after 8 days of therapy, 6.9% +/- 2.3 (P < 0.01 compared to the control grouped mean for each day of treatment).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Infection of implanted cardiovascular biomaterials still occurs despite inherent host defense mechanisms. Using a rotating disk system, we investigated Staphylococcus epidermidis and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) adhesion to a polyetherurethane urea (PEUU-A') under shear stress (0-17.5 dynes/cm2) for time periods up to 6 h. In addition, the superoxide (SO) release capacity of PMNs after transient exposure to PEUU-A' under shear stress was determined. Bacterial adhesion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) showed a linear shear dependence, decreasing with increasing shear stress. Overall adhesion in PBS decreased with time. However, bacterial adhesion in 25% human serum was similar for all time points up to 360 min.
Adhesion
was observed at all shear levels, displaying no shear dependence. In contrast, PMN adhesion demonstrated a strong shear dependence similarly for times up to 240 min, decreasing sharply with increasing shear stress. Although PMNs preexposed to shear stress showed a slightly diminished SO release response compared to fresh cells for all stimuli, it was not statistically significant regardless of the stimulus. We conclude that circulating leukocytes are unable to adhere in regions of high shear which may contain adherent bacteria. In addition, exposure to PEUU-A' and shear stress (in the range 0-18 dynes/cm2) is insufficient to cause a

in the oxidative response of PMNs.

Little more is known about the cellular and/or molecular control of this important morphogenetic event in any species.Gross, histological, microsurgical and immunohistochemical analyses in the mouse conceptus revealed that placental ontogeny took place in three major steps. The first, chorio-allantoic contact, was not enduring and was mediated by the allantois' mesothelial surface and the mesodermal component of the chorion. Modest amounts of VCAM-1 were found in distal allantoic mesothelium, whilst levels of alpha4-integrin were high throughout chorionic mesoderm. The second step, chorio-allantoic fusion, was more enduring. During this time, the distal allantoic region contained maximal levels of VCAM-1, and all allantoises had expanded far enough to reach the posterior chorion from where they spread toward a central chorionic

The last step, breakdown of chorio-allantoic fusing surfaces, was dependent upon chorio-allantoic fusion and resulted in the intimate juxtaposition of allantoic endothelium and chorionic ectoderm, possibly as a result of VCAM-1-mediated interactions. The umbilical connection was thereafter fixed at its perimeter to the chorionic surface by large amounts of VCAM-1 in disto-lateral allantoic mesothelium and alpha4-integrin in the remaining peripheral mesodermal component of the chorion.Thus, chorio-allantoic union is highly regulated, taking place in multiple steps. It is dependent upon the developmental maturity of distal allantoic mesothelium and involves the mesodermal component of the chorion. Breakdown of fusing surfaces enables penetration of the allantoic vasculature into the chorion. These findings provide a secure developmental foundation in which to elucidate the genetic control of early placentation.

Self-assembling oligopeptides are novel materials with potential bioengineering applications; this paper explores the use of one of these oligopeptides, EAK 16 II, for modifying the surface properties of cell-supporting substrates. To characterize the surface properties, thermodynamic measurements of liquid contact angle and surface free energy were correlated to atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. A critical concentration of 0.1 mg/ml was found necessary to completely modify the surface properties of the substrate with EAK 16 II.

of a yeast cell, Candida utilis, was modified by the coating of EAK 16 II on both hydrophobic (plastic) and hydrophilic (glass) surfaces: Cell coverage was slightly enhanced on the glass substrate, but decreased significantly on the plastic substrate. This indicates that the yeast cell adhesion was mainly determined via hydrophobic interactions between the substrate and the cell wall. However, on the EAK 16 II modified glass substrate, surface roughness might be a factor in causing a slightly larger cell adhesion than that on bare glass. The morphology of adhered cells was also obtained with AFM imaging, showing a

Ion currents and cytosolic free calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) elevations are crucial events in triggering the complex machinery involved in both gamete maturation and fertilization. Oocyte maturation is triggered by hormone signaling which causes ion currents and [Ca(2+)](i) increase. Extracellular calcium seems to be required for meiosis progression since: (i) calcium depletion in the maturation medium severely affects oocyte developmental competence; (ii) the activity of plasma membrane L-type Ca(2+) currents decreases during maturation; (iii) the exposure to verapamil, a specific Ca(2+) channel blocker, decreases in vitro maturation efficiency. In spermatozoa, maturation initiates inside the epididymis and ends in the female genital tract. During their journey through the female reproductive tract, sperm undergo a dramatic selection and capacitation achieving fertilization competence.

Adhesion
to pegylated combination therapy is a key factor for therapeutic success in patients HCV infected. To optimize it, goals to reach are to limit dose reduction and premature discontinuation of treatment due to adverse events ; to improve the patient compliance to treatment, particularly during the first three months, particularly to ribavirin. Therapeutic education, management of psychiatric adverse events, epoetin alfa, have demonstrated their benefit in terms of sustained virologic response or quality of life. Preparing the treatment with the patient and a multi-disciplinary team, setting successive therapeutic goals with the predictive value of the early virologic response will promote adhesion to treatment. A hepatitis C training program for general practitioners (GP) allows an efficient follow-up of treated patients by a trio hepatologist - GP - nurse and a concrete implication of GP in the field of hepatitis C. Further developments are needed for : taking in account the patient quality of life during treatment to anticipate premature discontinuation, promotion of therapeutic education by specialized nurses, standardization of the diagnosis of
depression
during treatment, and regular updating of general practitioners on antiviral C treatment.
