A 76-year-old man with a past history of pneumoconiosis visited the Department of Gastroenterology in our hospital suffering from
dysphagia
. Gastroscopy revealed an esophageal ulcer on the top of a torus lesion. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed it was caused by a swollen lymph node in the mediastinum. Squamous cell carcinoma related antigen (SCC) was elevated to 1.8 ng/ml. To rule out malignancy, we performed
fluorine
-18 deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDGPET) which revealed a significantly increased uptake in a nodular lesion in the right upper lobe and mediastinal lymph nodes. Biopsy and cytology of the nodular lesion revealed only pneumoconiosis. We must be careful when we interpret the findings of FDGPET in pneumoconiosis patients.

A 74-year-old woman had
dysphagia
and underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy. A giant submucosal tumor was seen from the middle to the lower esophagus.
Fluorine
-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-18 FDG-PET/CT) was performed and F-18 FDG was found to accumulate in the submucosal tumor. The maximum standardized uptake value of the early phase was 4.93 and that of the delayed phase was 6.48. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) was confirmed by both fine needle aspiration under endoscopic ultrasound and postoperative histopathologic findings. We stained the postoperative histopathologic specimen to investigate glucose transporter (GLUT) expression using immunohistochemistry, which revealed that GLUT-1 had a weak expression on membranes and GLUT-4 had a strong expression on membranes or in cytoplasm. GLUT-3 had no expression on membranes or in cytoplasm. Esophageal GIST is rare and the relationship between GLUT expression and F-18 FDG accumulation in GIST is probably rare.

Primary neurolymphomatosis is an extremely rare tumor. We report the case of a 74-year-old patient presenting with
dysphagia
and hoarseness. Initial contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the head, neck, and chest did not reveal any lesions. His symptoms improved with short-term administration of prednisone but recurred and deteriorated. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a tumor along the ninth and tenth cranial nerves across the jugular foramen.
Fluorine
-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography indicated this was a primary tumor. Repeated MR imaging after 2 months revealed considerable tumor enlargement. A left suboccipital craniotomy was performed to remove the tumor that infiltrated the ninth and tenth cranial nerves. The histopathologic diagnosis was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Although focal radiation therapy was administered to ensure complete eradication of the tumor, the patient died of aspiration pneumonia with systemic metastasis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of primary neurolymphomatosis in the lower cranial nerves.

Osteoradionecrosis of the hyoid bone is a rare complication of therapeutic irradiation performed for head and neck cancer. In this article, we present a 52-year-old male patient who admitted with severe odynophagia following chemo-radiotherapy administration for tonsil carcinoma.
Fluorine
-18-fluorodeoxy-glucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed a metabolic activity in hyoid bone. The pathological findings were consistent with fungal infection and hyoid bone necrosis. Hyoid osteoradionecrosis should be kept in mind in patients with intractable
dysphagia
following irradiation for head and neck tumors.
