The patient, a 33 year old male, had suffered from swelling of the chest, neck and face for 4 months; palpitation, chest and epigastrium pain, cough and yellowish sputum for 10 days before admission into our hospital. Blood routine and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were normal. By X-ray examination, the right upper mediastinum was obviously widened with the trachea displaced toward the left and pleural effusion was present on both sides. On day 5 of admission, the patient died of heart failure. The clinical diagnosis was not clear but lymphosarcoma or other malignant tumors in the mediastinum was suspected. Autopsy was performed. A large tumor 8 X 10 X 2.5 cm in size was found in the right atrium. The tumor had a short and broad pedicle (6 X 5 cm in diameter) connected with the upper part of the atrial wall. The histological diagnosis was primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the heart.

A 71-year-old man was admitted complaining of cough and high fever. Chest X-ray and CT scanning showed diffuse thickening of both pleurae and malignant mesothelioma was suspected. Upon pleural biopsy, a diagnosis of lymphosarcoma, well differentiated type, was made. Postmortem examination revealed diffuse, extensive fibrous thickening of both pleurae with multifocal spreading of tumor cells. These occasional Hassal's bodies. The latter cells were spindle-shaped and ovoid. Therefore, the tumor was diagnosed as "malignant thymoma, mixed type".

Histologic examination of lung tissue has been the only definitive diagnostic procedure used to confirm pulmonary involvement with lymphosarcoma (LSA) in dogs. Lung involvement with LSA was diagnosed by cytologic examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in 2 dogs with multicentric LSA. Both dogs had cough or dyspnea, in addition to peripheral lymphadenopathy or visceral organomegaly. Both dogs had nonspecific, abnormal thoracic radiographic findings, including diffuse pulmonary interstitial pattern, hydrothorax, and mediastinal and retrosternal lymphadenopathy. In these 2 dogs, postmortem lung histologic examination, performed immediately after bronchoalveolar lavage, confirmed the cytologic diagnosis of pulmonary infiltration with LSA.

Thirty-eight horses with confirmed thoracic neoplasia included 28 (37.7%) with lymphosarcoma, 4 (10.5%) with metastatic renal cell carcinoma, 2 (5.3%) with primary lung carcinoma, 2 (5.3%) with secondary squamous cell carcinoma from the stomach, 1 (2.6%) with pleural mesothelioma, and 1 (2.6%) with malignant melanoma. The major clinical features included weight loss, inappetence, dyspnoea and coughing, but in cases of lung metastases, they related more to the primary site of tumour formation. Haematological and serum biochemical abnormalities were non-specific. Specific pre-mortem diagnosis was made in 14 horses; this was most readily achieved when exfoliated neoplastic cells were present in pleural fluid.

Four cats presented with clinical signs suggestive of respiratory disease, including dyspnea, wheezing, cyanosis, inspiratory stridor, coughing, and gagging. Radiographs revealed intratracheal masses. Bronchoscopy allowed for lesion localization and collection of samples for cytopathological and histopathological evaluation, which confirmed a diagnosis of lymphosarcoma. Cats treated with systemic chemotherapy or radiation were able to achieve complete remission and long-term resolution of clinical signs.
