In this paper, recipes for 41 herbal remedies used for treating 25 illnesses in traditional medicine in Swaziland are reported. Preparation of the herbal remedies involved the use of different parts of 47 species from 32 families, some of which have never been described previously in the flora of Swaziland. Descriptions of the plants used, the preparation of each remedy, dosage, route of administration and medical uses are reported. Some of the diseases the remedies are used to treat include asthma, backache, candidiasis, cardiac problems,
cough
, diarrhoea, dizziness, eye problems, constipation, menorrhagia, painful shoulders,
scabies
, threatened abortion, toothache, ulcers and vomiting among others. The remedies were obtained from traditional medical practitioners (TMPs) in an ethnomedical survey carried out in the Manzini region of Swaziland. Voucher samples of the plants used for the remedies were collected, identified and deposited in the National Herbarium of Swaziland.

Nepal is a mountainous Himalayan country. All the signs of underdevelopment--poverty, illiteracy, sickness, malnutrition, high birth rate, high infant mortality--are evident. Life in Panchkhal is not easy. Women work hard, fetching water from streams or ponds. There are no safe sources of water. Water-borne diseases are common because of fecal contamination of water. Unhygienic habits and unsanitary disposal of human excreta have resulted in a high incidence of parasitic infestation in the community. In 1983, community-based health care units were set up. Community members pooled funds for a community-based primary health care unit where drugs for diarrhea,
scabies
, dysentry,
cough
, fever, and eye infection would be made available at low cost. The Integrated Family Planning and Parasite Control Project has set up a sales depot to make drugs available at nominal prices. 2 health units were established in Panchkhal in 1983. There was a strong determination on the part of the community to improve the health status of the people, especially that of the uner-5s. The local village health workers were trained and assigned to work in the project area. Village health workers found the health unit a useful base. The importance of disease prevention was realized by the villagers. At present there are 9 health units. Each is run by 2 village health workers who receive salaries from either the integrated project of the government FP/MCH program. Social workers also provide services. A woman volunteer trained in basic MCH and family planning motivation assists the unit twice a week. The responsibility of the health committee is to ensure the smooth operation of the unit and to see that health care is provided to the villagers. Toilets have now been constructed in many homes. Children are healthier. Family planning is more acceptable to the community. The marketing of lacal produce is a problem, as well as funding of the health project.

A total of eighty-one consecutive cases of Kala-azar admitted in all four medicine units of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital during the period from January 2002 to mid August 2002 were included in this study. The number of the patients clearly indicates that the burden of Kala-azar in this region is significant and expanding, which constituted 1.90% of total admission in all 4 medicine units during this period. Majority of the patients were of 20-29 years of age. Male to female ratio was 1.38:1. Maximum number of the patients were of poor socio-economic group with history of housing made up of mud and having close proximity with cattle house. Fever and splenomegaly (100%) were the predominant features. Hepatomegaly was found in 91.36% of the cases. Other clinical manifestations were weight loss (79.01%), normal or increased appetite (65.43%), generalized weakness (72.84%), pallor (69.13%),
cough
(25.92%), jaundice (17.28%), abdominal Pain (12.34%), hyperpigmentation (9.88%), ascites (4.94%) and bleeding manifestations (4.94%). Notable concomitant illnesses were urinary tract infection (7.40%), pulmonary tuberculosis (3.70%), malaria (1.23%),
scabies
(4.94%), heart failure (3.70%) and chronic liver disease (2.47%). Due to wide diversity of clinical presentations, clinical features of kala-azar should be evaluated in details which will pave the hidden cases into light.

Lindane is an organochlorine pesticide found in certain prescription-only shampoos and topical lotions used to treat pediculosis (i.e., lice infestation) and
scabies
; lindane has been associated with human neurologic toxicity. In 2004, CDC was alerted to cases of illness caused by unintentional ingestion of lindane by persons mistaking the product for a liquid oral medication (e.g.,
cough
syrup). To assess the extent of illness from ingestion of lindane, CDC, with assistance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state health departments, collected case reports and analyzed data from the Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risks-Pesticides (SENSOR-Pesticides) program and the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS). This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which identified 870 cases of unintentional lindane ingestion during 1998-2003, and describes two examples of lindane ingestions. To reduce the risk of lindane ingestion, public health authorities should alert clinicians to the hazards of lindane and the importance of following FDA usage guidelines, which include dispensing lindane in manufacturer-produced, 1- or 2-ounce single-use containers.
