This study is intended to detail the relative level of adaptation (at the hiatus palatinus) of five (5) acrylic resins used in partial and complete prosthodontics (Formatray, Orthodontic, Triad, Lucitone, Ivocap). These five (5) resins have been treated to five (5) different methods of conservation (in water at different temperatures, to air and to cold) to discover which of these methods are most likely to conserve the accuracy of adaptation one looks for in a resin.

This study evaluated the effects of chemical disinfectants on the color of denture base materials. Materials tested included Paladon 65 (Kulzer, Friedrichdorf, Germany), Triad VLC (Dentsply Int, York, PA), and ProBase Cold (Ivoclar, Schaan, Liechtenstein). The disinfectants were Klinex (Lever Hellas, Athens, Greece), Cidex-7 (Johnson & Johnson, East Windsor, NJ), Hibitane (Imperial Chemical, Macclesfield, UK), and Cabadol (Detax Karl Huber, Ettlingen, Germany). Denture material samples were placed in the various disinfectants and evaluated for color changes (delta E*) at intervals of 10 minutes, 10 hours, and 7 days. Changes in color were measured using a tristimulus colorimeter on 10 samples for each denture material and disinfectant combination. It was concluded that if the recommended disinfecting times are followed, no observable color changes should be anticipated for the denture materials tested. Even the long-term (7-day) immersion caused observable color changes only with Cabadol, a phenol-based disinfectant, and ProBase and Triad denture materials.

A 29-year-old woman presented with severe leg pain that had lasted for several weeks. During that period, she had taken painkillers in order to achieve sleep. In the week before she was admitted to hospital, she had noticed numbness and a cold feeling below her knees. There were no arterial pulsations below her groin, the skin of her legs being cold and pale. She had a history of chronic daily headache and had ingested Cafergot compound corresponding to ergotamine 2 to 3 mg daily for the previous 2 or 3 months. Angiography demonstrated severe narrowing of both superficial femoral arteries for a distance of about 5 to 6 cm and a subtotal stenosis of the right popliteal artery. After discontinuation of ergotamine, the patient's symptoms gradually disappeared within a few days. Angiography was repeated 2 days after the first examination and demonstrated regression of the spasms in the femoral arteries and reestablished flow in the distal vessels. Ergotamine tartrate can induce life-threatening ischemia of an extremity. Discontinuation of ergotamine is usually sufficient to reverse the ischemia, however, intravenous infusion of sodium nitroprusside may occasionally be necessary to avoid limb amputation.

The acrylic materials used in orthodontics for the fabrication of removable appliances are subjected in the oral cavity to processes of change which influence their physical, mechanical and biological properties. It is therefore essential that every newly developed material must be judged in terms of its clinical value. In the present study, 2 orthodontic cold-cure acrylics, Orthocryl and Forestacryl, and 4 orthodontic photocure acrylics, Triad, Wil-O-Dont, Odontolux and Lux-A-Tech, were investigated and compared with 2 prosthetic acrylic materials: the cold-cure acrylic Palapress and the hot-cure acrylic Paladon. The quantity of residual monomers from methyl methacrylate (MAA) or urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) eluted from the sample in a given time after the processing was estimated by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The cytotoxic properties of the materials were examined by Mosmann's proliferation-inhibition test with an established culture of fibroblasts (= MTT test). The hot-cure acrylic Paladon produced by far the smallest amount of eluted residual monomer and the least growth inhibition in the MTT test. The prosthetic cold-cure acrylic Palapress achieved significantly better results than the orthodontic cold-cure materials Orthocryl and Forestacryl. The photocure acrylics released less UDMA than did the cold-cure acrylics MMA. In the cell culture test, all the orthodontic materials examined were assessed as "slightly cytotoxic"; the prosthetic acrylics were graded under ISO-standard 10993-5 as "noncytotoxic". After soaking the plastic material in water for 3 days its cytotoxic properties, as exemplified by the cold-cure acrylic Forestacryl and the photocure acrylic Triad, were reduced, and during the following investigation no more inhibition of growth was observed. It was possible to confirm with the tests used that, for Triad, it is necessary to carefully remove the oxygen-inhibition layer of the photocure acrylic in order to improve the biological properties. The influence of the plastic material on fibroblast cultures was assessed, among other methods, by the quantity of residual monomers liberated. These were significantly reduced after soaking the manufactured substance in water for 3 days. Careful laboratory treatment of the photocure acrylics is necessary in order to improve their biological properties.

Trichloroethylene is an industrial solvent used primarily for vapor degreasing and cold cleaning. It was selected for study because of its industrial use and for potential for human exposure. (An estimated 3.5 million workers are exposed to trichloroethylene.) In an earlier study trichloroethylene (stabilized with epichlorohydrin and 1,2-epoxybutane) administered by gavage caused hepatocellular carcinomas in male and female B6C3F1 mice. Trichloroethylene administration did not increase the incidence of tumors in male or female Osborne-Mendel rats. However, the survival of dosed rats was reduced, thereby compromising the sensitivity of the study to detect a carcinogenic effect. The studies described in this report were conducted to compare the sensitivities of four strains of rats (ACI, August, Marshall, and Osborne-Mendel) to diisopropylamine-stabilized trichloroethylene. The results of the present studies demonstrate that long-term administration of trichloroethylene produces nephrotoxicity in four strains of rats and that the susceptibilities of these strains to the nephrotoxic effects of the chemical are similar. Because of chemically induced toxicity, reduced survival, and incomplete documentation of the experimental data, the studies are considered inadequate for either comparing or assessing trichloroethylene-induced carcinogenesis in these strains of rats. Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of trichloroethylene (more than 99% pure, stabilized with 8 ppm diisopropylamine) were conducted by administering the chemical in corn oil gavage at doses of 0, 500, or 1,000 mg/kg per day, 5 day per week, for 103 weeks to groups of 50 male and 50 female ACI, August, Marshall, and Osborne-Mendel rats. The doses were selected on the basis of results from 13-week gavage studies in which groups of 10 male and 10 female ACI, August, and Marshall rats received daily doses or trichloroethylene (male: 125-2,000 mg/kg; female: 63-1,000 mg/kg). Doses for Osborne-Mendel rats were selected to conform with doses used in an earlier carcinogenicity study in that strain (TR-2). In the 13-week studies, male ACI and August rats receiving 2,000 mg/kg trichloroethylene and male and female Marshall rats receiving 1,835 mg/kg had final mean body weights 12%-17% lower than those of the vehicle controls. All other dose groups had body weights comparable to those of the vehicle controls. Three male August rats dosed with 2,000 mg/kg died. Histopathologic evaluation of tissues revealed no lesions attributable to trichloroethylene administration in the 13-week studies. This absence of histopathologic findings did not accurately predict the nephrotoxic effects of long-term administration of trichloroethylene to rats. Body Weight and Survival in the Two-Year Studies: In the 2-year studies, all dosed groups exhibited some reduction in mean body weights relative to the vehicle controls. Survival relative to vehicle controls was significantly reduced in 7/16 dosed groups (see page 6 of the Technical Report). Also, the survival of high dose male Marshall rats was reduced by a large number of accidental deaths. Nephrotoxicity, reduced survival, and central nervous system toxicity (characterized by sedation, loss of consciousness, tremors, and convulsions) showed that the doses of trichloroethylene selected for the 2-year studies were too high. Renal Effects in the Two-Year Studies: Trichloroethylene caused tubular cell cytomegaly in 82%-100% of all dosed animals. In addition, trichloroethylene produced toxic nephropathy (which was distinguishable from age-related nephropathy) in 17%-80% of the dosed animals. Cytomegaly, karyomegaly, or toxic nephropathy was not found in untreated or vehicle control animals. Trichloroethylene administration was also associated with increased incidences of renal tubular cell adenomas and adenocarcinomas. The incidences of renal lesions are shown in the following table (see page 7 of Technical Report). Other Pathologic Effects in the Two-Year Studies: An increased incidence of interstitial cell tumors of the testis was observinterstitial cell tumors of the testis was observed in high dose male Marshall rats (untreated control, 16/46; vehicle control, 17/46; low dose, 21/48; high dose, 32/48; P=0.002). The incidences of pheochromocytomas of the adrenal gland were significantly reduced in male ACI, female August, female Marshall, and male and female Osborne-Mendel rats. Genetic Toxicology: Trichloroethylene did not cause mutations in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA100, TA1535, or TA1537 with or without metabolic activation. In Chinese hamster ovary cells, trichloroethylene did not induce chromosomal aberrations; the results for sister chromatid exchanges were considered positive. Trichloroethylene was mutagenic to mouse L5178Y lymphoma cells in the presence of rat liver S9. Data Audit: Audits of the experimental data for these 2-year studies of trichloroethylene were conducted by the National Toxicology Program (see Appendix Q of the Technical Report). The results of the audits revealed evidence that the doses of trichloroethylene were too high. In addition, there was insufficient documentation of animal breeding, clinical observations, environmental conditions, and analytical chemistry data. Also, individual animal identification was not always verifiable. Conclusions: Under the conditions of these 2-year gavage studies of trichloroethylene in male and female ACI, August, Marshall, and Osborne-Mendel rats, trichloroethylene administration caused renal tubular cell cytomegaly and toxic nephropathy in both sexes of the four strains. However, these are considered to be inadequate studies of carcinogenic activity because of chemically induced toxicity, reduced survival, and deficiencies in the conduct of the studies. Despite these limitations, tubular cell neoplasms of the kidney were observed in rats exposed to trichloroethylene and interstitial cell neoplasms of the testis were observed in Marshall rats exposed to trichloroethylene. The relationship between air temperature and human mortality is described as non-linear, with mortality tending to rise in response to increasingly hot or cold ambient temperatures from a given minimum mortality or optimal comfort temperature, which varies from some areas to others according to their climatic and socio-demographic characteristics. Changes in these characteristics within any specific region could modify this relationship. This study sought to examine the time trend in the maximum temperature of minimum organic-cause mortality in Castile-La Mancha, from 1975 to 2003. The analysis was performed by using daily series of maximum temperatures and organic-cause mortality rates grouped into three decades (1975-1984, 1985-1994, 1995-2003) to compare confidence intervals (p<0.05) obtained by estimating the 10-yearly mortality rates corresponding to the maximum temperatures of minimum mortality calculated for each decade. Temporal variations in the effects of cold and heat on mortality were ascertained by means of ARIMA models (Box-Jenkins) and cross-correlation functions (CCF) at seven lags. We observed a significant decrease in comfort temperature (from 34.2 degrees C to 27.8 degrees C) between the first two decades in the Province of Toledo, along with a growing number of significant lags in the summer CFF (1, 3 and 5, respectively). The fall in comfort temperature is attributable to the increase in the effects of heat on mortality, due, in all likelihood, to the percentage increase in the elderly population.

The Dark Triad of personality is a cluster of three socially aversive personality traits: Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy. These traits are associated with a selfish, aggressive and exploitative interpersonal strategy. The objective of the current study was to establish relationships between the Dark Triad traits (and their dimensions) and momentary affect. Machiavellianism, grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism and the dimensions of the Triarchic model of psychopathy (namely, boldness, meanness and disinhibition) were examined. We used the Day Reconstruction Method, which is based on reconstructing affective states experienced during the previous day. The final sample consisted of 270 university students providing affective ratings of 3047 diary episodes. Analyses using multilevel modelling showed that only boldness had a positive association with positive affective states and affect balance, and a negative association with negative affective states. Grandiose narcissism and its sub-dimensions had no relationship with momentary affect. The other dark traits were related to negative momentary affect and/or inversely related to positive momentary affect and affect balance. As a whole, our results empirically demonstrated distinctiveness of the Dark Triad traits in their relationship to everyday affective states. These findings are not congruent with the notion that people with the Dark Triad traits, who have a dispositional tendency to manipulate and exploit others, are generally cold and invulnerable to negative feelings. The associations between the Dark Triad and momentary affect were discussed in the contexts of evolutionary and positive psychology, in relation to the role and adaptive value of positive and negative emotions experienced by individuals higher in Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy.
