implies failure of this adaptive feeding response. In vivo NPY release and regional hypothalamic NPY concentrations were measured in rats with trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced
colitis
, healthy controls and animals pair-fed to match the food intake of the colitic group. Food intake in the colitic group was assessed after administration of NPY and two other potent orexigenic peptides: melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and hypocretin (orexin-A). Food intake was decreased by 30-80% below control values for 5 days in the colitic rats. In both the pair-fed and colitic groups, release of NPY in the paraventricular nucleus was significantly increased compared with free-feeding controls. Intraventricular or intrahypothalamic administration of NPY, MCH or hypocretin elicited a feeding response in healthy controls, but not in the colitic group. In summary, animals with TNBS-
colitis
and
anorexia
show an appropriate increase in hypothalamic NPYergic activity. However, the failure of NPY and other orexigenic peptides to increase feeding in the colitic group indicates suppression of feeding, either by inhibition of a common downstream hypothalamic neuronal pathway or by induction of one or more potent anorexigenic agents.

Blood work revealed a moderate nonregenerative anemia, leukocytosis, hypokalemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and mildly elevated alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. Serology was negative for occult heartworm, Toxoplasma gondii, feline leukemia virus, feline infectious peritonitis, feline immunodeficiency virus, and canine distemper virus. Electron microscopy of the feces demonstrated corona-like virus particles. The panda died 3 days after initial presentation. Histologic findings included multifocal, acute, hepatic necrosis and diffuse, necrotizing
colitis
. Liver and colon lesions contained intracellular, curved, spore-forming, gram-negative, silver-positive rods morphologically consistent with Clostridium piliforme. This panda most likely contracted Tyzzer's disease subsequent to having a compromised immune system after corticosteroid administration and concurrent disease.

and died one after another. At necropsy, all four snakes had severe hemorrhagic

. Microscopically, all snakes had severe necrotizing hemorrhagic

, in association with ameba-like protozoa. Some of the protozoa had macrophage-like morphology and others formed protozoal cysts with thickened walls. These protozoa were distributed throughout the wall in the large intestine. Based on the pathological findings, these snakes were infested with a member of Entamoeba sp., presumably with infection by Entamoeba invadens, the most prevalent type of reptilian amoebae.

Ever since its first description in 1918, Dientamoeba fragilis has struggled to gain recognition as a significant pathogen. There is little justification for this neglect, however, since there exists a growing body of case reports from numerous countries around the world that have linked this protozoal parasite to clinical manifestations such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, and
anorexia
. A number of studies have even incriminated D. fragilis as a cause of irritable bowel syndrome, allergic
colitis
, and diarrhea in human immunodeficiency virus patients. Although D. fragilis is most commonly identified using permanently stained fecal smears, recent advances in culturing techniques are simplifying as well as improving the ability of investigators to detect this organism. However, there are limitations in the use of cultures since they cannot be performed on fecal samples that have been fixed. Significant progress has been made in the biological classification of this organism, which originally was described as an ameba. Analyses of small-subunit rRNA gene sequences have clearly demonstrated its close relationship to Histomonas, and it is now known to be a trichomonad. How the organism is transmitted remains a mystery, although there is some evidence that D. fragilis might be transmitted via the ova of the pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis. Also, it remains to be answered whether the two distinct genotypes of D. fragilis recently identified represent organisms with differing virulence.

induction. Pretreatment with glycomacropeptide had a dose-dependent anti-inflammatory effect, characterized by lower body weight loss, decreased

(57%), colonic damage (65%), and weight to length ratio (32%), as well as a reduction in colonic alkaline phosphatase activity (42%) and interleukin 1, trefoil factor 3, and inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA levels (P < 0.05). The mechanism of action of glycomacropeptide is unknown but is consistent with an inhibition of the activation of immune cells. The magnitude of the anti-inflammatory effect was generally comparable to that of sulfasalazine, an established drug used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Bovine glycomacropeptide may play a role in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

A 2-year-old, Quarter Horse filly was referred to Michigan State University, Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 2-3 day history of depression and partial
anorexia
progressing to severe, watery diarrhea with severe neurologic abnormalities, including repetitive muscle fasciculations, muscle stiffening, and collapse. Laboratory findings included severe polycythemia, neutropenia, metabolic acidosis, and electrolyte and fluid loss, consistent with watery diarrhea and endotoxic shock. Increased creatine kinase and aspartate transaminase activities were consistent with recent transport and the muscle abnormalities. Severe hyperammonemia (1369.0 micromol/L; control value, 15.3 micromol/L) was found, without other substantial laboratory evidence of hepatic dysfunction. The horse was euthanized because of poor prognosis and rapid clinical deterioration. Necropsy findings were unremarkable with the exception of severe diffuse
colitis
. Culture of colonic contents recovered >1000 colony-forming units of Clostridium perfringens. Based on these findings, marked hyperammonemia in this filly was attributed to changes in colonic flora leading to increased bacterial production of ammonia that was readily absorbed through the inflamed bowel wall, exceeding the hepatic capacity for deamination. Intestinal bacteria as a source of hyperammonemia in the absence of hepatic disease has been linked rarely to positive culture results for clostridial organisms.
