The incidence of metastases to the breast from nonbreast carcinoma is less than 1% of all breast cancers; of these, adenocarcinoma of the lung to breast is a small proportion (<0.1% of breast carcinomas). The imaging findings of a case of metastatic lung adenocarcinoma to the breast are presented with a review of the literature. Imaging findings including elastography suggesting the breast mass is not a primary breast cancer are highlighted. The importance of notifying the pathologist that nonbreast metastatic disease is in the differential is discussed. The use of appropriate tumor markers is needed; otherwise, the lesion may be interpreted as a triple negative breast cancer.

High dimensionality and small sample sizes, and their inherent risk of overfitting, pose great challenges for constructing efficient classifiers in microarray data classification. Therefore a feature selection technique should be conducted prior to data classification to enhance prediction performance. In general, filter methods can be considered as principal or auxiliary selection mechanism because of their simplicity, scalability, and low computational complexity. However, a series of trivial examples show that filter methods result in less accurate performance because they ignore the dependencies of features. Although few publications have devoted their attention to reveal the relationship of features by multivariate-based methods, these methods describe relationships among features only by linear methods. While simple linear combination relationship restrict the improvement in performance. In this paper, we used kernel method to discover inherent nonlinear correlations among features as well as between feature and target. Moreover, the number of orthogonal components was determined by kernel Fishers linear discriminant analysis (FLDA) in a self-adaptive manner rather than by manual parameter settings. In order to reveal the effectiveness of our method we performed several experiments and compared the results between our method and other competitive multivariate-based features selectors. In our comparison, we used two classifiers (support vector machine, [Formula: see text]-nearest neighbor) on two group datasets, namely two-class and multi-class datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that the performance of our method is better than others, especially on three hard-classify datasets, namely Wang's Breast Cancer, Gordon's Lung Adenocarcinoma and Pomeroy's Medulloblastoma.

A woman who had formerly had adequately treated breast cancer presented with symptoms of pain in the right shin. An X-ray of the punctum maximum for the pain showed a bone lesion. Biopsy revealed that it came from an adenocarcinoma of the lung, contrary to the first diagnosis of breast cancer meta-stasis. The lung lesion had been seen on a subsequent computed tomography. There were no presenting symptoms relating to lung cancer. This case is interesting as adenocarcinoma metastasis to bone rarely occurs in the tibia and below the knee.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that most commonly involves the visceral or parietal pleura, but that has also been described arising from virtually all organs. This neoplasm exhibits rich vascularity, a characteristic it shares with renal cell carcinoma, making these tumors especially suitable for harboring metastases. We present a case of a 64-year-old woman with history of right breast cancer treated six years previously and who presents with a left pulmonary SFT containing metastatic invasive ductal breast carcinoma as well as a synchronous contralateral primary adenocarcinoma of the lung. The literature on tumor-to-tumor metastasis is then reviewed.

Transcriptome data can provide information on signaling pathways active in cancers, but new computational tools are needed to more accurately quantify pathway activity and identify tissue-specific pathway features. We developed a computational method called "BioTarget" that incorporates ChIP-seq data into cellular pathway analysis. This tool relates the expression of transcription factor TF target genes (based on ChIP-seq data) with the status of upstream signaling components for an accurate quantification of pathway activity. This analysis also reveals TF targets expressed in specific contexts/tissues. We applied BioTarget to assess the activity of TBX21 and GATA3 pathways in cancers. TBX21 and GATA3 are TF regulators that control the differentiation of T cells into Th1 and Th2 helper cells that mediate cell-based and humoral immune responses, respectively. Since tumor immune responses can impact cancer progression, the significance of our pathway scores should be revealed by effective patient stratification. We found that low Th1/Th2 activity ratios were associated with a significantly poorer survival of stomach and breast cancer patients, whereas an unbalanced Th1/Th2 response was correlated with poorer survival of colon cancer patients. Lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma patients had the lowest survival rates when both Th1 and Th2 responses were high. Our method also identified context-specific target genes for TBX21 and GATA3. Applying the BioTarget tool to BCL6, a TF associated with germinal center lymphocytes, we observed that patients with an active BCL6 pathway had significantly improved survival for breast, colon, and stomach cancer. Our findings support the effectiveness of the BioTarget tool for transcriptome analysis and point to interesting associations between some immune-response pathways and cancer progression.

The Metastasis Associated Lung Adenocarcinoma Transcript 1 (MALAT1) is among long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) which has disapproved the old term of "junk DNA" which was used for majority of human genome which are not transcribed to proteins. An extensive portion of literature points to the fundamental role of this lncRNA in tumorigenesis process of diverse cancers ranging from solid tumors to leukemia. Being firstly identified in lung cancer, it has prognostic and diagnostic values in several cancer types. Consistent with the proposed oncogenic roles for this lncRNA, most of studies have shown up-regulation of MALAT1 in malignant tissues compared with non-malignant/normal tissues of the same source. However, few studies have shown down-regulation of MALAT1 in breast cancer, endometrial cancer, colorectal cancer and glioma. In the current study, we have conducted a comprehensive literature search and provided an up-date on the role of MALAT1 in cancer biology. Our investigation underscores a potential role as a diagnostic/prognostic marker and a putative therapeutic target for MALAT1.

Miliary metastasis to the central nervous system (CNS) is a rare presentation of metastasis mainly found in primary adenocarcinoma of the lung. Its association with breast cancer is even less frequent. We present the case of a 50-year-old female patient diagnosed in 2010 with stage IIA infiltrating ductal breast cancer RE (-), RP (+), HER 2 (-), HER2 NEU (+). She was treated with modified radical left breast mastectomy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Her condition began presenting oppressive frontal headache without irradiation, predominantly in the evening, intensity 8/10, which decreased when sleeping and was exacerbated with stressful situations, in addition to progressive cognitive deterioration. Simple and contrasted computed tomography (CT) of the skull and thoracoabdominal were requested, showing multiple micronodular lesions with calcium density in the brain parenchyma, left pleural effusion, hypo and hyperdense lesions in the liver parenchyma, as well as osteoblastic lesions in the lumbar spine. Simple and contrasted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the skull showed multiple supra and infratentorial intra-axial lesions. The most frequent associated symptom with miliary metastasis is cognitive impairment. Miliary metastasis, confirmed by imaging studies and histopathology, requires the ruling out of other causes of this calcification pattern, such as neurocysticercosis, due to specific treatment for each pathology.
