The study examined 75 autistic individuals who met DSM-III-R criteria for autistic disorder at 5 years of age. Diagnosis was based on information elicited using a standardized interview for autism. Two of 75 (2.7%) autistic subjects expressed the fragile X marker (Xq27.3) in 40% of cells counted and had other affected family members. Two additional subjects expressed the fragile X anomaly at low rates (1%). These rates are compared with those reported in other studies. Methodological differences, which may underlie the varying rates reported across studies, are discussed.

CD4+ (helper) T cells are a heterogenous population of lymphocytes including at least two distinct subpopulations. To investigate the possibility that immune abnormalities in some subjects with autism may involve abnormal distributions of CD4+ and/or CD8+ cells, (suppressor) T cells, peripheral blood lymphocytes of 25 autistic subjects were characterized with monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. The autistic subjects had a significantly lower percentage and number of CD4+ cells, a lower number of T cells (CD2+ cells) and B cells (CD20+ cells), and a lower percentage and number of total lymphocytes than siblings and normal subjects. The level of blood values for female subjects appeared lower than those for males as compared to normal subjects of the same sex. These results suggest that a decrease in CD4+ cells is associated with autism.

Existing residential services for adults with autism vary in size, location, and source of funding. Most service options have been designed for individuals with handicaps other than autism and therefore have difficulty addressing the needs of all but the highest functioning autistic adults. This paper provides a review of the characteristics of autism that affect adaptation to residential settings. A description of existing residential options based on the combined experiences of Great Britain and North Carolina is presented, and directions for future research are then discussed.
