Initial manifestations of cerebrovascular pathology (CVP) in the presence of arterial hypertension (n-26) and
atherosclerosis
(n-428) were combined with various cardiovascular disorders ranging from
cardialgia
to coronary heart disease in 67.4% of the patients. Cardial disturbances were expressed as an atypical pain syndrome in 47% and as angina of effort and postinfarction cardiosclerosis in 23.2% of the patients. Electrocardiographic changes were elicited in 52.6-62% of the patients. Bicycle ergometry revealed a decrease in all parameters of tolerance to physical exercise. Disorders of the general and cerebral hemodynamics were more pronounced in atherosclerotic patients; at the first stages of cerebral pathology they predominantly presented the normokinetic type of the hemodynamics (40.6%) while its more marked forms were associated with the hypokinetic type of the circulation (52). The early diagnosis of cardial and hemodynamic disorders is necessary for the presention of acute disturbances of the cerebral circulation.

The authors studied 158 young women with the syndrome of sclerocystic ovaries (SCO) and 40 healthy subjects. The patients showed a high rate of vegetovascular dystonia, predominantly according to the hyperparasympathicotonic type,
cardialgia
and dyspnea. In 54.5% of the patients lipid metabolism disturbances of the atherogenic nature were elicited, being most pronounced in the hypothalamic-pituitary form of the disease. It is postulated that in cases of the SCO syndrome, the deficit of estrogens and pregnanediol decreases "immunity" of females to the development of atherogenic dyslipoproteinemias while a relative or absolute hyperandrogenia accounts for the transformation of the "female" type of the lipid spectrum into the "male" type with lower levels of cholesterol of high density lipoproteins (LP) and higher levels of TG, and cholesterol of very low density LP and of low density LP. It is recommended that the SCO syndrome should be included into the risk factors for
atherosclerosis
and coronary heart disease.

Twenty-six patients with arterial hypertension and chest pain were examined using echocardiography, bicycle ergometry, pharmacological tests with the intravenous administration of dipiridamol and isoproterenol, coronary angiography and left ventriculography. With regard to the painful syndrome the patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 with angina, Group 2 with
cardialgia
. The majority of the group 1 patients showed extensive
atherosclerosis
of the coronary arteries. The results of bicycle ergometry and pharmacological tests in this group were positive in the majority of cases. The group 2 patients displayed minor
atherosclerosis
of the coronary arteries or intact arteries which correlated with negative results of the bicycle ergometry and pharmacological tests. Echocardiographic and ventriculographic examinations of the functional state of the left ventricle revealed circulation insufficiency in none of the patients.

Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai in Chinese), as a famous traditional Chinese medicine, has great medicinal and dietary values since ancient times. In China, the dry bulbs of Allium macrostemon and Allium chinense are both used as its original plants. Pharmacological studies have revealed that both of them could increase plasminogen activator activity and prolong the effect of coagulation to achieve antiplatelet aggregation which validates their traditional uses for the treatment of thoracic obstruction and
cardialgia
in clinics. Besides, several other significant activities, including lipid-lowering, anti-
atherosclerosis
, antitumor, antispasmodic, antibacterial, antioxidant, and insecticidal activities, have already been reported. The volatile oils, nitrogenous compounds, and steroidal saponins are the major beneficial compounds. Among them, steroidal saponins are considered as the characteristic constituents. In this review, the current information concerning the phytochemistry and pharmacology of Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus is summarized comprehensively. In addition, several research future perspectives are presented, especially the mechanism of bioactive components and fraction from the bulbs of Allium macrostemon and Allium chinense.
