A case of aphonia following a long-time endotracheal intubation is presented. The paramedian position of the left and the incomplete adduction of the right vocal cord were caused by a complete, respectively partial ankylosis of the cricoarytenoid joints. The ankylosis was the result of an

during the intubation period. A nearly normal mobility of the vocal cords and a normal voice was achieved by translaryngeal injections of Fludrocortisone and

encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a lentivirus which infects goats and causes chronic progressive
arthritis
after a prolonged incubation period. CAEV replicates productively in cultures of goat synovial membrane cells and causes cytopathic effects characterized by multinucleated giant cell formation. The enzyme hyaluronidase was found to accelerate this virus induced fusion of GSM cells.

treatment also resulted in synthesis of increased levels of unintegrated viral DNA early after infection. However, there was no significant increase in viral RNA in the infected cells or in the amount of virus produced. These studies suggest that hyaluronidase facilitates the interaction of CAEV with the target cells. Further it suggests that only a few copies of viral DNA are required to achieve maximal levels of virus replication. Additional copies of viral DNA appear to be redundant not contributing to viral specific transcription or increased production of virus.

The activity of collagenase, cathepsin B1, cathepsin D and
Hyaluronidase
was determined in skin, bone, liver, kidney, spleen and serum of adjuvant induced arthritic rats during the acute and chronic phase of the disease. Collagenase was assayed directly in tissue extract by a solution method using radioactive labelled substrate. The activity of collagenase, cathepsin B1 and D was found to increase significantly at both phases of the disease. The activity of hyaluronidase decreased significantly in liver, kidney and spleen of arthritic rats, while in skin, bone and serum no significant change was observed. . Prednisolone and L-thyroxine were administered to arthritic rats and the activity of collagenase, cathepsin B1, cathepsin D and hyaluronidase was determined in the treated groups during the acute and chronic phase of the disease. Prednisolone was found to suppress the development of
arthritis
which, in turn, decreased the increased activity of collagenase and lysosomal enzymes cathepsin B1 and D in tissues and serum of arthritic rats. L-Thyroxine was found to slowly diminish the development of inflammation and its beneficial action was found in mesenchymal tissues and skin of arthritic rats but not in bone.

. We assessed the chondroprotective potential of TG by examining its effects on the activities of pure hyaluronidase and collagenase type 2 enzymes. Triphala shodith guggulu (TSG), an intermediate in the production of TG, was also examined. A spectrophotometric method was used to assay
Hyaluronidase
activity, and to detect potential
Hyaluronidase
inhibitors. Aqueous and hydro-alcoholic extracts of TSG showed weak but dose-dependent inhibition of hyaluronidase activity. In contrast, the TG formulation was 50 times more potent than the TSG extract with respect to hyaluronidase inhibitory activity. A validated X-ray film-based assay was used to measure the gelatinase activity of pure collagenase type 2. Hydro-alcoholic extracts of the TG formulation were 4 times more potent than TSG with respect to collagenase inhibitory activity. Components of Triphala were also evaluated for their inhibitory activities on hyaluronidase and collagenase. This is the first report to show that the T2 component of Triphala (T.chebula) is a highly potent hyaluronidase and collagenase inhibitor. Thus, the TG formulation inhibits two major enzymes that can degrade cartilage matrix. Our study provides the first in vitro preclinical evidence of the chondroprotective properties of TG.
