We report the fabrication of
Fabry
-Perot microcavity structures with the organic light-emitting material tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)
aluminum
(Alq3) and derive their optical properties by measuring their photoluminescence (PL) and absorption. Silver and a TiO2-SiO2 multilayer were used as metal and dielectric reflectors, respectively, in a
Fabry
-Perot microcavity structure. Three types of microcavity were prepared: type A consisted of [air[Ag[Alq3]Ag]glass]; type B, of [air[dielectric[Alq3]dielectric]glass]; and type C, of [air[Ag[Alq2]dielectric]glass]. A bare Alq3 film of [air[Alq3]glass] had its PL peak near 514 nm, and its full width at half-maximum (FWHM) was 80 nm. The broad FWHM of a bare Alq3 film was reduced to 15-27.5, 7-10.5, and 16-16.6 nm for microcavity types A, B, and C, respectively. Also, we could control the PL peak of the microcavity structure by changing the spacer thickness, the amount of phase change on reflection, and the angle of incidence.

Fabry disease
(
angiokeratoma corporis diffusum
universale) is a rare, X chromosome-linked lysosomal storage disease. The deficient enzyme, alpha-galactosidase A (alpha-gal A), is responsible for the accumulation of neutral glycosphingolipids within vascular endothelial lysosomes of various organs, including skin, kidneys, heart, and brain. The disease manifests primarily in affected hemizygous men and to some extent in heterozygous women ('carriers'). The diagnosis of
Fabry disease
is made in hemizygous males after the detection of the presence of angiokeratomas, irregularities in sweating, edema, scant body hair, painful sensations, and of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, ophthalmologic, phlebologic, and respiratory involvement. A deficiency of alpha-gal A in serum, leukocytes, tears, tissue specimens, or cultured skin fibroblasts further supports the diagnosis in male patients. Since heterozygous women show angiokeratomas in only about 30% of cases and may have alpha-gal A levels within normal range, genetic analysis is recommended. Current treatment of angiokeratomas of
Fabry disease
is based mainly on the use of laser systems, including variable pulse width 532nm Neodymium:Yttrium-
Aluminum
-Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser, 578nm copper vapor laser, and flashlamp-pumped dye laser. When cutaneous and mucous glands are affected, restrictions may be required with regard to the time spent in a warm climate and the amount time spent working or on sporting activities, and may necessitate the use of topical and systemic antiperspirant agents, and topical application of artificial lacrimal fluid and saliva, respectively. For the future, new treatment modalities, including enzyme replacement therapy, substrate deprivation strategies, and gene therapy offer extraordinary options for the cutaneous and visceral lesions in patients with

Fabry
-Perot-like resonant transmission of microwave radiation through a single subwavelength slit in a thick
aluminum
plate is quantified for a range of slit widths. Surprisingly, and in contrast to previous studies [e.g., Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5601 (2001)]], the resonant frequency exhibits a maximum as a function of slit width, decreasing as the slit width is reduced to less than 2% of the incident wavelength. This result accords with a new model based on coupled surface plasmon theory taking into account the finite conductivity, and hence permittivity, of the metal. This is contrary to a common assumption that metals can be treated as infinitely conducting in this regime.

This paper advances a kind of micro-spectrometer based on
Fabry
-Perot cavity's character of filtering the waves. The basic structure of the micro-spectrometer is the array of
Fabry
-Perot cavity which contains many different lengths of cavity on the substrate of silicon, consequently the authors can achieve the detection at several wavelengths simultaneously. The unit of probing is a
Fabry
-Perot cavity made up of the substrate of silicon-metal film-silicon dioxide layer-metal film. The authors carried out the corresponding simulation. In the basic structure of
aluminum
film(14 nm)-silicon dioxide layer-silver film(39 nm), the resolution can reach 15 nm. When the area of a unit of probing is 0.14 mm x 0.14 mm only, it can reach the luminous flux of miniature grating spectrum instrument (the minimum volume in the order of cm), but the volume of the part of spectrum detection is only of the order of mm. The design size of the micro-spectrometer is a few millimeters. Furthermore it has no movable parts and could detect several wavelengths at the same time. It is possible to fabricate such micro-spectrometer through existing processing methods of IC technology.

We present an integrated optical displacement sensing method for microscale sensors which is based on an asymmetric
Fabry
-Perot etalon structure with an embedded phase-sensitive diffraction grating. Analytical modeling of the structure shows that the etalon significantly improves the detection sensitivity as compared to a regular optical interferometer and the embedded diffraction grating enables integration of optoelectronics in a small volume. The efficacy of the method is experimentally validated on a surface micromachined diffraction-based opto-acoustic sensor fabricated on a quartz wafer. A 15 nm silver layer is used to form the bottom mirror of the etalon structure with a sensor membrane and embedded diffraction grating made of
aluminum
. Comparison of the results with and without the etalon shows an 8 dB increase in detection sensitivity with the etalon structure, which should be further enhanced with the use of low-loss dielectric mirrors.

A novel instrument is described for obtaining accurate high-resolution residual stress images of
aluminum
oxide materials, based on the piezospectroscopy of Cr(3+) dopant ions. The instrument employs a charge coupled device camera, a narrow bandpass tunable filter and the use of Tikhonov regularization for reconstruction of the raw spectral data. The experimental accuracy and spectral shift resolution of this method were analyzed with two calibration light sources and with independently measured spectra, and were found to be approximately +/-0.01 nm across the pixel array. This is close to the theoretically obtainable accuracy for the particular filter used, a solid etalon
Fabry
-Perot filter with a passband of 0.25 nm, based on an analysis with simulated data. The spectral resolution corresponds to a stress resolution, under biaxial stress conditions, of +/-40 MPa.

We report on the ability of resonant plasmonic slits to efficiently concentrate electromagnetic energy into a nanoscale volume of absorbing material placed inside or directly behind the slit. This gives rise to extraordinary optical absorption characterized by an absorption enhancement factor that well exceeds the enhancements seen for extraordinary optical transmission through slits. A semianalytic
Fabry
-Perot model for the resonant absorption is developed and shown to quantitatively agree with full-field simulations. We show that absorption enhancements of nearly 1000% can be realized at 633 nm for slits in
aluminum
films filled with silicon. This effect can be utilized in a wide range of applications, including high-speed photodetectors, optical lithography and recording, and biosensors.

We study the angle and frequency dependence of sound transmission through water-immersed perforated
aluminum
plates. Three types of resonances are found to govern the acoustic properties of the plates: lattice resonances in periodic arrays,
Fabry
-Perot modes of the hole cavities, and elastic Lamb modes. The last two of them are still present in random arrays and have no parallel in optical transmission through holes. These modes are identified by comparing experiment with various levels of theoretical analysis, including full solution of the elasto-acoustic wave equations. We observe strong mixture of different transmission mechanisms, giving rise to unique acoustic behavior and opening new perspectives for exotic wave phenomena.

The sensing of temperature and of ultrasonic pressure with fiber-optic
Fabry
-Perot interferometers embedded in
aluminum
is demonstrated. The metal parts are cast in air by using graphite molds. Breakage of the fibers at the air-metal interface during the casting process is avoided through the use of stainless-steel stress-relief tubes. The optical phase in an embedded interferometer is found to be 2.9 times more sensitive to temperature change than for the same interferometer in air, in good agreement with model calculations. An embedded interferometer has also been used to detect ultrasonic waves over the frequency range of 0.1-8 MHz.

The transmission characteristics of

-Perot type
aluminum
-magnesium fluoride-
aluminum
interference filters for the wavelength region 1700 A to 2400 A are described. Typical peak transmissions of 0.25 with bandpasses <300 A are obtained with first-order filters on fused silica substrates. Secondorder filters give narrower bandpasses. Methods of filter preparation are described briefly, and the effects of the optical properties of the
aluminum
reflecting layers on filter performance are discussed.
