Leukemia, aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, renal failure, cystic fibrosis, scoliosis, diabetes, and asthma. These are only a few of the many chronic diseases or handicapping conditions confronting children today. Little attention has been paid to children's emotional reactions to illness and hospitalization, important facets of the healing process. In the first part of this paper, children's characteristic emotional reactions to hospitalization are discussed within a developmental framework. Next, some of the emotional reactions elicited in hospital staff and parents by seriously ill children are discussed. It is hoped that an elucidation of the types of feelings hospitalized children experience, and the kinds of emotional responses they elicit in adult caretakers, can lead to more sensitive and effective child care-giving in hospital settings.

Priapism is a rare urologic emergency in pediatric population. It is usually a consequence of sickle cell disease. Leukemia is another important cause of priapism in children. We present a case of priapism associated with an acute pulmonary infection. To our knowledge, this is the second case describing this association. In the other reported case, pulmonary infection was related to Mycoplasma Pneumoniae. The hypothesis is that infection with Mycoplasma Pneumoniae can produce a hypercoagulable state, especially in selected areas of the circulation.

Skeletal manifestations are common in hematologic disorders. Benign entities such as Sickle cell disease develop microvascular embolization causing skeletal crisis. Leukemia, acute myeloblastic or lymphoblastic may develop bone marrow infarcts. Compromised immunity makes them susceptible to secondary infection leading to osteomyelitis or septic arthritis. Exposure to steroids may lead to osteonecrosis in these cases. Presented here is an atlas of various scintigraphic skeletal manifestations encountered over the past 10 years, in hematologic disorders.
