In 100 patients with various haematological syndromes and in 22 healthy subjects serum transferrin was determined by the method of radial immunodiffusion of Mancini. The results were correlated with total iron-binding capacity, iron concentration, beta1 globulin and albumin levels. A statistically significant rise in serum transferrin concentration was demonstrated only in patients with sideropenic anaemia. In the remaining groups of patients transferrin concentration was decreased without regard to associated disturbances of iron metabolism and iron level. The comparison of the total iron-binding capacity with transferrin level determined by radial immunodiffusion may suggest presence of iron-binding proteins other than transferrin.

Haematological investigations of peripheral blood and bone marrow were performed in rabbits receiving hydrazinophthalazines (hydralazine or binazin) with or without simultaneous hyperimmunization by means of repeated injections of bovine albumin. It was found that long-term administration of hydralazine caused appearance of LE factor in the serum and LE cells in blood. Less evident changes were caused by Binazin administration. Hyperimmunization caused weaknening of the effects of hydralazinophthalazines. Haematological investigations demonstrated hypochromic anaemia.

In 59 patients with warm-type autoimmunohaemolytic anaemia classes and types of immunoglobulins, presence of complement, serological specificity of autoantibodies, and in 14 selected cases also IgG subclasses were determined. It was found that warm autoantibodies differed from anti-Rh alloantibodies. In 27 patients only one type of L chain was found but, in the light of complex investigations, the authors reached the conclusion that this result cannot be sufficient for accepting autoantibodies as monoclonal immunoglobulins, since in some of them 2 or 3 IgG subclasses and more than one serologic specificity were demonstrated. These observations indicate the need for more precise investigation methods for explaining the problem of monoclonal origin of warm autoantibodies.

In 18 patients with autoimmunohaemolytic anaemia presence of light chains of IgG autoantibodies was south for by the method of direct antiglobulin reaction. In 11 patients variability was observed in the detection of light chains. The authors discuss the possible causes of this observation: variable participation of different cell lines in the production of autoantibodies and changes in the conformation of immunoglobulin molecule in the erythrocyte.

Notwithstanding the legalization of abortions because of social indications, acute renal insufficiency after septic and criminal abortions still constitutes a high percentage of cases to be treated in the dialysis department. This article reports on 26 cases of acute renal insufficiency after criminal or septic abortions and on their complications. All cases were characterized by a marked hyperthermia for 2-4 days, marked hyperleucocystosis, early onset of anemia with intravascualr hemolysis and protracted hypotonia. Early introduction of exchange blood transfusion decreased the signs of anemia and stopped the development of intravascular hemolysis, but did not change in any significant way the course of acute renal insufficiency. In the study presented here, 4 women deceased within 2-3 hours after admission; in conclusion, treatment was unsuccessful in 16 cases, and lethal exit occurred in 10 cases. Treatment was successful in 5 out of 14 cases after criminal abortion, and in 11 cases after septic abortion. Better results were observed in those patients where the proper diuretic therapy and exchange blood transfusions or dialysis were undertaken in the first 3 days after abortion. That is why it is recommended to transfer patients with acute renal insufficiency subsequent to criminal or septic abortion to the dialysis department in the first 24 to 48 hours after abortion. In a patient with chronic lymphatic leukaemia severe autoimmunohaemolytic anaemia (NAIH) was observed with coexistence of cold incomplete IgM, warm incomplete IgG and warm haemolysins active against papainized erythrocytes in low pH medium. The serologic and immunochemical characteristics of autoantibodies are presented and the mechanism of their action in vitro is tentatively explained.

Two phenotypes with defect of sialic acid in the cell membrane of erythrocytes due to some unknown factor, imitating the weak variant of antigen A are reported. One of them found in a healthy candidate for blood donation was called Tn. The second one associated with thrombocytopenia and anaemia differed from all as yet classified ones in that it had simultaneously increased expression of antigen H and lack of reaction with Dolichos biflorus lectin. For demonstrating the diagnostic difficulties differentiation against the weak variant of antigen A approaching A3 is described.

The interrelationship between erythropoiesis activity and the dynamic of copper metabolism in normal rats and the rats with experimentally induced anemia and polycythemia was studied, using 64Cu injected intravenously in the form of CuCl2. The studies demonstrated that the copper metabolism is different in erythropoiesis stimulation and inhibition. Significant changes in the plasma ceruloplasmin level and the plasma copper content as well as in the plasma copper clearance and blood copper turnover were observed.

The results of serological investigations in 23 patients with autoimmunohaemolyts anaemia (AIHA) and warm-type autoantibodies belonging to IgG immunoglobulins are presented. The serological specificity of autoantibodies was demonstrated in 8 cases, and in 4 of them specificity to single antigen of the Rh system was demonstrated, in the remaining 4 cases they were specific against U antigen. The method of identification of these autoantibodies and their characteristic features are described. Analysing the clinical course of AIHA in three cases with anti-U autoantibodies it was stated that was chronic, intermittently recurring and was not associated with proliferative disorders of the haematopoietic system.

Fetal haemoglobin concentration was determined in the blood of 122 adult patients. Raised level of this haemoglobin was found in cases of anaemia during chronic renal failure and in certain cases of malignant neoplasms. Besides that, fetal haemoglobin level was determined in anaemia associated with other diseases (liver failure, hyperthyroidism, myasthenia gravis). The obtained results are discussed.
