The oral toxicity of Tifemoxone, phenoxymethyl-6 tetrahydroxazine-1, 3 thione-2, a new potential antidepressant was studied during 6 months in rats at 30, 85 and 230 mg/kg/d and in beagle dogs at 10, 55 and 300 mg/kg/d. Thyroid hyperplasia and hypoactivity were observed in the rats and dogs plasma triiodothyronine, determined in dogs, was modified. A dose dependent hepatotoxic effect was observed in the rats and dogs. In dogs at low dose, one animal died after B.S.P. test.

consumption and urinary volume increased, weight loss and

. Geochemical studies indicate that the majority of lead in ecosystems originated from industrial operations, and that human lead intake has increased 100-fold above the "natural" level. Prehistoric human skeletons contain about two orders of magnitude less lead than present-day samples. Biochemical interference with heme biosynthesis can be detected as a result of current lead exposures, inhibition of aminolevulinate dehydratase and accumulation of zinc protoporphyrin in erythrocytes being the earliest effects.
Anemia
is uncommon except for cases of lead poisoning, but even slightly increased lead absorption results in a decrease in hemoglobin concentrations. Modern neurobehavioral test methods have disclosed increased prevalence of psychological dysfunction associated with augmented lead absorption. Biochemical and behavioral changes occur below the recommended limit for blood lead concentration of 60 micrograms/100 ml. Several diagnostic tests for lead toxicity are available. The protoporphyrin concentration in the blood seems to be the best risk indicator. The highest occupational lead exposures occur in lead smelters and storage battery plants, but several other industrial operations may result in high lead levels. As much as 1% of the working population may have a significantly increased lead absorption with possible adverse effects.

(2) Relieve of obstruction results in excess polyuria as blood flow and glomerular filtration recover rapidly, the extracellular space gets rid of its osmotic load, and the tubular dysfunction of resorption continues for several days until the epithelium has recovered from its pressure atrophy. which requires adequate substitution; otherwise, natriuretic shock will result. (3) The chronic (bilateral) obstruction behaves in a similar way, yet is less reversible. The tubular damage is the same. Moderate polyuria occurs already during the stage of obstruction. Hereby the extracellular space decreases. After relieve of the obstruction the polyuria increases significantly, yet less rapidly than after acute obstruction as the glomerular function does not recover completely. The aim of this investigation was to establish the relationship of cadmium-induced fetal growth retardation in the mouse to iron deficiency. Pregnant mice were either fed a low iron diet or given 40 ppm cadmium in their drinking

. The effects of these factors on fetal weight and hematological values of the fetuses and dams were established and compared, both with each other and with appropriate controls. Both treatments caused maternal and fetal
anemia
, the fetuses being more severely affected. The anemic fetuses were also severely growth retarded. These changes, when caused by the iron deficient diet, could be completely prevented by either parenterally or orally administered iron supplements. When the changes were caused by cadmium in the drinking

they were only partially prevented by oral supplements. From these results it was concluded that iron deficiency in pregnancy causes not only

but also fetal growth retardation. Cadmium exposure in pregnancy, presumably by blocking intestinal absorption of iron, also causes
