PC-904 was administered to 16 pediatric patients and the following basic and clinical results were obtained. (1) PC-904 was administered 20 approximately 30 mg/kg. The serum peak level of PC-904 after drip intravenous infusion over 1 hour was 66.7 microgram/ml at 1 hour and T 1/2 of PC-904 was 67.8 minutes. PC-904 was administered 25 approximately 30 mg/kg intravenous one shot injection was 49.4 microgram/ml at 1 hour and T 1/2 of PC-904 was 52.2 minutes. (2) Urinary excretion rate was about 20% up to 6 hours after drip intravenous infusion of 20 mg/kg. In a case of intravenous one shot injection of 25 approximately 30 mg/kg, the excretion rate was 11.9 approximately 19.9%. (3) PC-904 was administered 60 approximately 120 mg/kg/day for 3 approximately 48 days to 5 cases of sepsis and bacterial endocarditis, 6 of pneumonia, 2 of sss syndrome (staphylococcal scald skin syndrome) and 3 of pyelonephritis. Clinical effects were excellent in 11 cases and good in 5 cases, effective ratio being 100%. (4) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus viridans, Acinetobacter anitratus and Hemophilus influenzae isolated from clinical specimens disappeared by the treatment of PC-904, and Hemophilus influenzae isolated from clinical specimens disappeared by the treatment of PC-904. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae reduced. (5) As to the side effect by PC-904, s-GOT and s-
GPT
were elevated in 2 cases.
Anemia
, rash and fever were observed in each 1 case out of 16 patients though the causal relation with the agent was unknown.

Groups of Brahman-cross steers maintained on two nutritional planes were infected intravenously with a stabilate of Anaplasma marginale. In general, animals on the higher plane of nutrition were more severely affected. Fever was the first clinical sign of anaplasmosis but, like
anaemia
, was absent in the mildest cases. When present
anaemia
appeared two to three weeks after infection. There was a corresponding increase in erythrocyte sedimentation rates when read after 24 h but not at 1 h. The haemolytic nature of the
anaemia
was indicated by a significant increase in unconjugated bilirubin during the acute phase. Some visceral damage was suggested by a significant increase of serum aspartate amino-transferase (GOT) especially in severely affected animals of the 'high' nutrition group but no significant change occurred in levels of alanine amino-transferase (
GPT
).

A 16-year-old girl with myocarditis and hepatitis in the course of mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was reported. She had fever and coughed for ten days prior to admission. At the time of admission infiltrations of the left lower lung field were revealed on the chest X-ray films. The ESR was elevated and CRP+6. There were no leukocytosis and
anemia
, but S-GOT, S-
GPT
and LDH were moderately increased. On the 11th day of admission VPC in bigeminy appeared and the third sound was heard. Subsequently biphastic and inverted T waves in leads V2 and V3 and flattening of T waves in leads II and aVF appeared. At the same time, the cardiac shadow was enlarged. Antibody titer to mycoplasma pneumoniae increased to more than 1:640 two weeks after admission and then it decreased gradually. The cold agglutinin test was 1:64 on the 8th day of the disease and then it became normal. ASO, antibodies to DNA and immunoglobulins were normal; ANA, Coombs test and LE test were negative. The abnormal ECG-findings were normalized three months later.

A description is given of an outbreak of equine infectious
anaemia
(E.I.A.) in Campania [at Naples and Aversa (Caserta)]; it was diagnosed by clinical, pathological and serological examinations (Coggins test). Using the serum of 45 horses with E.I.A. and 11 healthy horses (controls), numerous investigations were carried out on: enzymes, intrinsic coagulation factors, lipids and other substances. The results obtained were very interesting and show that in this disease there are significant increases in many enzymes (LDH, LAP, gamma-GT, CPK, PK and ALD) and copper. Insignificant increases were found in other enzymes (SDH, GLDH, MDH, ICDH, AIP, lysozyme, cholinesterase, GOT and
GPT
) and also intrinsic coagulation factors, lipid substances (total cholesterol, esterified cholesterol, triglycerides) and glucose. LDH-1-isoenzyme remains unchanged, whilst AcP decreases slightly.

Hematograms, platelet function, and blood-enzyme chemistry were compared in two similar saturation-excursion dives, one conducted in a hyperbaric chamber and the other in the open sea. The chamber dive was more stressful in that it was preceded by a series of bounce decompression dives (one of which produced a 100% incidence of cutaneous pruritus in four subjects) and in that the excursions from saturation depth (60 fsw or 2.818 ATA) were longer and deeper (producing one case of O2 convulsions, one of confirmed decompression sickness, and several of Doppler-detected vascular bubbles). The chamber dive was associated with a marked and significant reduction in circulating platelet count; significant increases in plasma enzyme activities in the victim of O2 toxicity (LDH, CPK) and in one subject with Doppler bubbles and questionable bends symptoms (LDH, GOT,
GPT
) but not in another; and mild but significant
anemia
. In the open-water dive, one subject, who developed symptoms of gastroenteritis, showed moderate elevation of LDH, GOT, and
GPT
activity. No significant change in platelet counts occurred. Both dives were associated with elevated white-cell counts, apparently as a result of numerous minor infections, and reduced sensitivity of platelets of ADP-induced aggregation.

A subacute oral toxicity study of 6-amidino-2-naphthyl 4-[(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl) amino] benzoate dimethanesulfonate (FUT-187), a new protease-inhibiting agent, was carried out in beagle dogs of both sexes. FUT-187 was administered to dogs at daily oral doses of 15, 50 and 150 mg/kg. Dogs in 150 mg/kg group were given twice a day in a.m. and p.m.. The results were as follows: 1. Changes of physical sign attributed to FUT-187, consisted of vomiting, diarrhea, salivation, decrease of locomotor activity, sedation and hyperemia of eye mucosa. These changes expect vomiting vanished within about 2 hours after treatment. One male given 150 mg/kg died on day 19 and two females given 150 mg/kg were sacrificed on day 55 and 67 due to deterioration of systemic conditions. 2. Body weight gain was suppressed in males given 150 mg/kg and females given 50 mg/kg or more. 3. In hematological examinations, some changes suggesting
anemia
or inflammation were observed in a few animals received 50 mg/kg or more 4. In serum biochemical examinations, dogs given 50 mg/kg or more had decrease of albumin, total protein, A/G ratio and total cholesterol, increase of
GPT
activity. In liver function test, decrease of function was observed in a few animals in 150 mg/kg group. These changes diminished by the end of recovery period. 5. In autopsy findings, ulcer formation and desquamation of mucosa in the digestive tract were observed in dead or sacrificed animals and survived animals given more than 50 mg/kg. In sacrificed animals, liver was yellow in color and intussusception was seen. 6. Plasma levels of intact FUT-187 and metabolites on the day 37 or 83 were higher than that on the first day of administration. 7. In histopathological examinations, ulcer formation, desquamation, degeneration and/or atrophy of mucosa in the digestive tract were observed in the animals from 50 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg groups. In addition, fatty deposition in hepatocytes was observed in one dead animal and two sacrificed animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A case of B cell lymphoma with clinical and histological features of malignant histiocytosis was described. A 57-year-old male was admitted to Shinshu University Hospital because of transverse myelopathy. Five months before admission, he noticed urinary disturbance, which progressed to urinary obstruction. The following month, bilateral muscular weakness appeared in his legs. A few days later he could not stand up, and was admitted to a local hospital. Neurological examination revealed sensory disturbances below the level of Th12 in all modalities, and marked weakness and hyperreflexia in the lower limbs. A spinal tumor was suspected. However, myelography showed no abnormality. The patient's condition worsened and he became bed-ridden in February 1990. He was transferred to Shinshu University Hospital for further evaluation. On admission he was poorly nourished with fever,
anemia
, hepatomegaly, and bilateral pretibial pitting edema. No lymphadenopathy was observed. Neurological examination showed total sensory loss below the level of Th12, spastic paraplegia, hyperreflexia in the legs, and urinary obstruction. Laboratory findings revealed an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, increased CRP, pancytopenia, and hypoalbuminemia. Serum level of IgG, IgA, IgM, LDH, ALP,
GPT
and total bilirubin were increased. CSF and MRI imaging of the spinal cord were normal. Proliferation of atypical histiocytes with marked erythrophagocytosis, which is a characteristic pathological feature of malignant histiocytosis, was observed in peripheral blood and aspirated bone marrow. Immunoenzyme staining of bone marrow using monoclonal antibody L-26, which is a B-cell marker, revealed B-cell lymphoma.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

FEP and other hematological parameters were measured in 157 healthy rural residents (98 females and 59 males). The mean FEP in females was higher than in males (p less than 0.05); mean +/- SD = 62.98 +/- 19.36 and 54.57 +/- 21.20 micrograms/dl.pcv, respectively, although both of the means were within normal limits. There was no significant sex difference in erythrocyte ALA-D activity. Whole blood lead (Pb-B) level in females showed a tendency to be lower than in males, but there was no significant sex difference in erythrocyte lead level. The mean value of hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb) and iron in serum (Fe-S) were lower in females than in males (p less than 0.01). Serum GOT and
GPT
level tended to be lower in females than in males (0.05 less than p less than 0.1). There was hardly any significant relationship between Pb-B and each parameter of lead exposure, because the subjects in this study were only rural residents with no occupational lead exposure and with their Pb-B levels being extremely low. As for the parameters of
anemia
, Fe-S was positively correlated with Ht and Hb level and negatively correlated with FEP level. By sex, Fe-S was correlated with Ht and FEP level only in females. As for the possible reasons why FEP level in females in higher than in male, women tended to have iron-deficiency induced by blood loss due to menstruation, pregnancy, and difference in dietary pattern from males.

The hemodynamics during hemodilution occurred after hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma with liver cirrhosis and its influences on the liver functions were studied. The hematocrit value gradually decreased about 10% until the 4th postoperative day owing to hemodilution after hepatectomy. While
anemia
progressed, cardiac index inversely increased. Under such a condition, oxygen consumption was maintained so that acidosis did not develop. Arterial blood ketone body ratio was also kept within a normal range except for a case whose hematocrit value decreased to 17.1%. Although the escaped hepatic enzymes such as GOT and
GPT
increased in the serum after hepatectomy, hemodilution was not responsible for their increase. While total bilirubin increased in the severe hemodiluted group, the increase was not due to hemodilution but caused by blood transfusion. The protein synthesis of the liver measured by rapid turnover protein levels in plasma was depressed after surgery, and this depression prolonged to the 14th postoperative day in the group whose hematocrit value decreased below 20%. These results suggest that it is better to keep hemodynamics without blood transfusion unless the hematocrit value decrease below 20%, and also better to maintain the hematocrit above 20% for liver regeneration after hepatectomy.

A 52-year-old woman presented slight fever, diffuse papular skin rash and painful cervical lymph node swelling. Her lymph node swelling generally up to 3 cm in diameter, with petechiae on the lower legs and hepato-splenomegaly within a few weeks. ESR was 45 mm/h, Hb 10.0 g/dl, RBC 345 x 10(4)/microliter, WBC 22,600/microliter (atypical lymphocyte 47%), PLT 1.0 x 10(4)/microliter,
GPT
91 U/L, gamma-globulin 34.3%, EBV-VCA x 2,560, EBNA x 20, and anti-rubella antibody x 512. The biopsied cervical lymph node showed histologic features of effacement of nodal architecture by an exuberant vascular proliferation accompanied with infiltration of the immunoblasts, and was diagnosed as immunoblastic lymphadenopathy (IBL)-type lymphadenopathy. The pulse therapy of methylprednisolone and high dose of gamma-globulin improved lymphadenopathy, thrombocytopenia and
anemia
. IBL-type lymphadenopathy after infection of rubella virus may be different from true IBL, but is important to discuss the pathogenesis of IBL.
