A clinical and biological study was conducted between September 1, 1983 and August 31, 1984, at the Sendwe Maternity Hospital in Lubumbashi, concerning
anemia
in pregnant women. This prospective study showed that 41.90 p. cent of women in this series are anemic. Per order of frequency, the
anemia
was normocytic in 291 patients (62.85 p. cent), microcytic in 216 (25.04 p. cent) and macrocytic in 56 (12.10 p. cent). Among the etiological factors, the most important are: poor socioeconomic development, multiple
intestinal parasites
and malaria. Moreover, it should be pointed out that young primiparous women represent 36 p. cent of the cases, or more than one-third of the population. In anemias occurring during pregnancy, the fetus is more vulnerable than the mother. He is the victim of a number of accidents, the most frequent in this series being intrauterine growth delay.

In order to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and other
intestinal parasites
, a household sample survey of children under 5 years old was carried out during the late dry season in 8 rural villages in southern Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in 10 of 270 stool samples (3.7%), using a safranin-methylene blue staining method. Of these 10 children (age range 5-16 months), all non-Muslims, 6 had diarrhoea, giving a prevalence of 12.5% in 48 children with diarrhoea, compared with 1.8% in children without diarrhoea (P less than 0.001). The ethnic group with the highest prevalence (9.2%) also kept most domestic animals, and was the only group to keep cattle. Giardia lamblia was found in 16 children, and the overall prevalences of other enteric parasites were: hookworm, 21.7%; Strongyloides stercoralis, 7.4%; Ascaris lumbricoides, 6.9%; Trichuris trichiura, 4.4%; Entamoeba histolytica, 1.5%; and Taenia sp., 0.5%. The prevalence of cryptosporidiosis was highest in the age group 7-12 months, while for the other parasites it was highest in the oldest children. The prevalence of hookworm was highest (c. 50%) in the southernmost villages. No significant relationship was found between hookworm infection and
anaemia
.

The health status of 239 Ethiopian refugees in the United States was evaluated. Over 70 per cent were males 15-30 years old. Positive PPDs (purified protein derivative of tuberculin) were observed in 72 per cent and 3.4 per cent had abnormal chest x-rays. One patient had active tuberculosis. Other laboratory abnormalities included:
intestinal parasites
(36.7 per cent),
anemia
(14.9 per cent), eosinophilia (14 per cent), positive syphilis serology (7.5 per cent), and hepatitis B surface antigenemia (9.4 per cent). The most prevalent
intestinal parasites
were Giardia lamblia, Trichuris trichiura, and Schistosoma mansoni.

Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in widely scattered areas of the world. To better characterize the South American form of the disease, the clinical and laboratory manifestations of 29 patients admitted to hospital (18 male and 11 female patients, mean age 4.9 years), were assessed in an endemic area in northeastern Brazil. Fever, weight loss, pronounced splenomegaly, hepatomegaly,
anemia
, thrombocytopenia, relative neutropenia, hypoalbuminemia and hypergammaglobulinemia were found in the majority of patients. Symptoms were often present for two or more months before diagnosis. Secondary infections complicated many cases; there were ten cases of pneumonia and half of the patients had one or more
intestinal parasites
. The average length of hospital stay was 27 days; all patients were treated with meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime). The mortality rate was 3%. American visceral leishmaniasis remains an important disease among children living in endemic areas.

We investigated 101 pregnant women, looking at haematologic values (blood-cell count, haematocrit...) on blood samples and searching for
intestinal parasites
on stool samples. We found that first-time pregnant young ladies frequently suffer from
anemia
, mainly during the second and third trimester of their pregnancy. Infestation with ankylostoma duodenale is one of the major causes. Therefore our advice to fellow-physicians is to look at these haematologic values and stool exams quite routinely for a better care of all pregnant women from our areas.

Indochinese patients of all ages continue to present with multiple health problems. The most prevalent include incomplete immunizations, skin disease, dental disease, positive tuberculin skin tests, otitis media,
anemia
and
intestinal parasites
. Thorough health assessments for both adults and children include complete patient's age. If health problems can be diagnosed and treated soon after arrival in the United States, the refugees can then concentrate on the daily adaptation problems and complete the acculturation process.

More than 0.5 million refugees from Southeast Asia have immigrated to the United States. We undertook a prospective evaluation of 709 refugees within two months of their resettlement in San Diego. The sample included 164 Vietnamese, 356 Cambodians, 139 Laotians, and 50 Hmong. The prevalence of abnormalities was high:
intestinal parasites
, 61%; positive tuberculin test (PPD) results 55%;
anemia
, 37%; hepatitis B antigenemia, 14%; and abnormal VDRL test results, 12%. Except for hepatitis, significant differences were noted among the Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Hmong subjects on each of these health status indicators. The refugee population should not be considered a homogeneous group of Indochinese, particularly by those responsible for their health care.

A survey was carried out in Guyana to determine the prevalence and the etiology of the nutritional anemias among both sexes, in various age groups, and in pregnant and lactating women. The sample consisted of 590 subjects drawn from 103 households selected by multistage cluster sampling. Anthropometric and hematological measurements and stool investigations for
intestinal parasites
were carried out in each subject. Socioeconomic and other demographic data were obtained for each household. High prevalences of
anemia
, although of a relatively mild degree, were found among all age groups especially among pregnant and lactating women. The major factors related to Hb levels were found to be inadequate consumption of food rich in the erythropoietic nutrients, iron deficiency, age, sex, pregnancy, household income, and percentage of household income spent on food. A number of socioeconomic and other demographic variables were associated with
anemia
. More
anemia
was found in urban than in rural areas.

All previous studies of
intestinal parasites
in Southeast Asian refugees have included immigrants with and without symptoms. In order to determine the prevalence of
intestinal parasites
in asymptomatic Southeast Asians, 226 adult refugees were studied who had no symptoms or signs suggestive of intestinal parasitism and who submitted one to three stools for examination. Fifty-four percent of these asymptomatic adults were infected with one or more potential pathogens, 22 percent with Ascaris, 20 percent with hookworm, 11 percent with Opisthorchis sp, 7 percent with Trichuris, 5 percent with Strongyloides, 5 percent with Giardia, and 2 percent with Entamoeba histolytica. Laotians and Cambodians, persons who stayed in Thai refugees camps, and patients with
anemia
or eosinophilia were more likely than other refugees to harbor pathogenic parasites. Nonetheless, refugees without these characteristics were often infected, and no single characteristic excluded any refugee from a high probability of being parasitized. There is a high prevalence of potentially pathogenic parasites in asymptomatic adult Southeast Asians, similar to that reported in refugees unselected for the presence or absence of symptoms.

A health survey was carried out among residents of 33 villages under the Phitsanulok Irrigation Project Area, Nan River Basin, Northern Thailand, whereby general health conditions were examined including intradermal tests for schistosomiasis japonica, stools for
intestinal parasites
and sera tested by circumoval precipitin test for antibodies to S. japonicum and by agglutination test for leptospiral infection. Health investigations revealed that 913 (60.9%) of 1,499 people examined had experienced gastro-intestinal disorders, 254 (17%) had poor oral hygiene and a few had mild
anemia
. 799 (62%) of 1,298 examined had
intestinal parasites
. Hookworm (45%) was most common, followed by Opisthorchis viverrini (20%), Entamoeba coli (10%), Ascaris lumbricoides (6%), intestinal flukes (2%), Enterobius vermicularis (1%) and Giardia lamblia (1%). 149 (10%) of 1,422 people gave positive skin reaction to crude S. japonicum antigen. Circumoval precipitin test was strongly positive in 7 (1.6%) persons out of 449 tested for schistosome infection and 6 (4.0%) out of 1,358 people were positive for leptospiral infection. The significant endemic diseases as potential health problems in this water resources development are discussed.
