In 1975, a survey was conducted in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, to determine the prevalence of equine infectious
anemia
. Using the agar gel immunodiffusion test, 94 of 1,398 horses (6.7%) were found to be infected.
Infection
rates were especially high in areas where clinical cases of equine infectious
anemia
had been diagnosed. Clinical signs compatible with the disease were noted in 1 of the 94 seropositive horses. The sample set of 1,398 horses represented 22% of the census population obtained during the 1971 Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis vaccination campaign.

The effects of splenectomy and size of inoculum on response of hamsters to three isolates of Babesia microti (two rodent- and one human-derived) from Long Island were studied. Splenectomy of hamsters did not enhance susceptibility to the rodent isolates of B. microti at a dosage of 5 X 10(7) parasites. Larger parasite inocula produced shorter prepatent periods and slightly shorter duration of infection in intact hamsters. Inoculum size was not contributory to mortality of hamsters or to pathogenesis. Hamsters showed profound
anemia
with depressed hematocrit and hemoglobin values and erythrocyte counts. Moderate leucocytosis was seen just prior to peak parasitemia, with immature polymorphonuclear cells predominating.
Infections
in hamsters lasted for 14--17 weeks. As determined by the parameters studied, the three isolates appear to be identical.

Infection
of BALB/c mice with Rauscher leukemia virus (RLV) gives rise to pronounced erythrocytopoiesis manifesting in splenomegaly and is associated with progressive development of
anemia
. In the spleen erythroid colony forming units (CFU-E) increase exponentially up to 800-fold that of normal levels by the third week of infection. In vitro these CFU-E are dependent on erythropoietin for colony formation, their erythropoietin requirements being higher than that of CFU-E from normal mice. Numbers of CFU-E in spleen and degree of splenomegaly in anemic RLV infected mice were also shown to be modified by red blood cell transfusion, but progression of the disease was not stopped. Erythroid burst forming units (BFU-E) were also responsive to erythropoietin. However, a small proportion of cells also formed BFU-E colonies at concentrations which did not support growth of normal marrow BFU-E. When compared to normal, CFU-E found in RLV-infected spleen have similar velocity sedimentation rates. However, buoyant density separation of leukemic spleen cells indicated that CFU-E were more homogeneous (modal density 1.0695 g/cm3) than CFU-E from normal spleen. Analysis of physical properties of CFU-E and the nonhemoglobinized erythroblast-like cells, which accumulate in the spleen showed that they differed mainly in their distribution of cell diameter. Our findings show that erythroid progenitor cells in RLV infected mice are responsive to erythropoietin in vitro. Also in vivo erythropoiesis appears to be under control of erythropoietin but other factors which lead to progression of RLV disease apparently exist. Most proerythroblast-like cells, which are characteristic of this disease, apparently lack the potential to form colonies and may be more mature than CFU-E.

Amebiasis, that is, infection with Entameba histolytica, continues to be endemic in the United States, with liver abscess occurring as an infrequent but constant complication. Seven cases are reported, with epidemiologic investigation of two. Reliable findings in hepatic abscess include fever, abdominal pain, respiratory distress, tender abdomen, and large, tender liver.

, elevated white count with left shift, and the radiographic findings of an elevated right hemidiaphragm are constant. Epidemiologically, amebiasis occurs in clusters in the United States with person-to-person transmission predominant in spread.

Investigation of the families of two patients documented 9/21 carriers and an additional 3/21 who were seropositive, as well as crowding and poor sanitation. In this country, treatment of a patient with amebic disease should include investigation of his home and family.

Tne Droughtmaster and 9 Hereford cattle were born in an enzootic babesiasis area and became naturally infected with Babesia argentina and B.bigemina during a 3 year period. They were then kept free of cattle ticks (Boophilus microplus) for the remainder of the experiment. Annually for the next 3 years their individual infection status with Babesia was determined by sub-inoculation of blood into splenectomised calves. At the end of this period the functional immunity of all cattle was challenged by blood inoculation of heterologous strains of B. argentina and B. bigemina.
Infection
with B. argentina persisted in all Herefords for 2 years and in 7 for 3 years after they had been freed of B. microplus. The number of Droughtmasters with detectable B. argentina infection progressively declined, and at the end of 3 years only 2 of 10 were still infected. No Herefords were shown to be infected with B. bigemina following 1 year's freedom from B. microplus but latent B. bigemina infection of at least 2 year's duration was demonstrated in one of the Droughtmasters. A marked degree of resistance was apparent in all cattle when they were challenged with an heterologous strain of B. argentina. There were no differences between the response to challenge of the Herefords and Droughtmasters nor between the reactions of cattle which had apparently naturally sterilised B. argentina infection and those which were still infected. The heterologous strain of B. bigemina produced parasitaemia in the majority of animals but only minimal fever and
anaemia
resulted with no significant differences between the breeds.

Malaria infection in young rats is characterized by high parasitemia, severe
anemia
, and death. Parasitemia is lower in older rats, and the rats usually survive. This study was designed to investigate the immunological basis of this difference. T cell numbers in the thymuses and spleens of young (4 weeks old) and in adult (18 weeks old) infected and control rats were determined by killing with anti-theta serum and complement. The number of complement receptor lymphocytes (B cells) in spleens was determined after these cells had formed rosettes with sensitized, complement-coated sheep erythrocytes.
Infection
in young rats was characterized by progressive and severe thymic involution and by decreasing numbers of T and B cells in the spleen. In 18-week-old rats, T cell numbers in the spleen were slightly below those of controls early in infection but exceeded normal values by day 15. Progressive thymic involution was not a feature of infection in adult rats. The number of complement receptor lymphocytes in the spleens of adult rats decreased dramatically early in infection but were nearly normal by day 15. Severity of malarial infection in young rats is related to the inability of their lymphocytes to respond to Plasmodium berghei antigens early in infection in a way that leads to immunity.

A review of 869 cases of multiple myeloma seen at the Mayo Clinic from 1960 through 1971 revealed that 98% of patients were 40 years of age or older and that 61% of them were males. Inital findings were bone pain in 68% of patients,
anemia
in 62%, renal insufficiency in 55%, hypercalcemia in 30%, a palpable liver in 21%, and a palpable spleen in 5%. Proteinuria was noted in 88% and Bence Jones proteinuria was identified in 49%. Skeletal roentgenographic abnormalities were seen in 79%. Serum protein electrophoresis showed a spike in 76%, hypogammaglobulinemia in 9%, and minor or no abnormalities in 15%, and a globulin spike was seen 75% of the urinary electrophoretic patterns. Immunoelectrophoresis of the serum revealed a monoclonal heavy chain in 83% and a monoclonal light chain in the serum, in 8% (Bence Jones proteinemia). Three patients had no monoclonal protein in the serum or the urine ("nonsecretory"). Amyloidosis was found in 7% of the patients. Follow-up information was obtained in 99.7% ; 82% of the 869 patients have died.
Infection
and renal insufficiency were the most common specific causes of death. The median survival was 20 months; 66% of the patients were alive at 1 year and 18% at 5 years.

Plasmodium colombiense sp. n. is described from 274 naturally infected Anolis auratus from western Colombia. Host blood pictures, parasitemia, parasite structure, infection states, and host population dynamics are correlated. Local epidemics occur, but in contrast to temperate zone species there is little regional synchronization. Active infections occur year-around, being somewhat more common in dry seasons; however, chronic infections predominate. Mature schizonts have 3 to 14, usually 6, 8, or 10 merozoites, reduced to 4 to 6 in chronic infections. Gametocytes are round to oblong, measuring 6 by 5 mu, and the pigment in microgametocytes occurs in a single peripheral vacuole. Parasitemia averaged 2.5% and seldom surpassed 20 to 30%.

Four infants with Lues connata, three with the early stage of the disease (patients 1-3), are reported. Diagnosis was made after exclusion of other diseases. Initially an infectious disease was expected, since
anemia
, leucocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hepatomegaly and/or splenomegaly and a bad condition were found. In two patients bone structure was abnormal. Elevated serum concentrations of liver enzymes (ALAT, ASAT) were the indication for liver biopsy in one patient, in whom an accompanying hepatitis was diagnosed. Treatment was performed with penicillin, no JARISCH-HERXHEIMER reaction was observed. The Lues tests were negative during pregnancy but a displacental transfer of pathogenic agents could be assumed. Patient 4 was diagnosed at 9 months of age.
Infection
of the mother probably occurred in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. It can not be decided if the baby has a connatal or acquired Lues. The titer decrease of the CMT-test after the end of the penicillin therapy is a marker for a successful treatment. If treatment was started at 2 years of age a total clinical recovery can be expected. The case reports demonstrate that negative Lues test during pregnancy do not exclude Lues connata in newborns. The Lues diagnosis should be considered if an infectious disease in a newborn can not be diagnosed. A general Lues serodiagnostic test is recommended in all newborns before they leave the obstetrics department.
