Amenorrhea was studied in 11 women aged 18-31 years who had been tre ated with combined oral contraceptives for 5 months-4 1/2 years. All were nulliparae, and had had normal cycles before treatment. In 10 patients a clomiphene stimulation test was performed, and 6 also had an LH-RH stimulation test. Impaired response was seen in 4 patients to the clomiphene, and continuation of clomiphene treatment combined with gestagens provoked hemorrhages. In 3 cases ovulation was induced when chorionic gonadotropin was added to the treatment. A possible relationship between preexisting psychosomatic disorders and the etiology of postcontraceptive amenorrhea is discussed.
