A 26-year-old man was admitted with fever and
abdominal pain
. Abdominal ultrasonography and Doppler ultrasound eventually revealed portal vein thrombosis and a pyogenic
liver abscess
(17x11x11 cm). Lactococcus lactis was isolated from a culture of the abscess material. This organism is not a common pathogen in humans. This is the first published description of portal vein thrombosis and pyogenic
liver abscess
due to L. lactis.

In adults, diffuse haemangiomatosis of the liver is a very rare condition. The aetiology and clinical evolution are not well understood, and the literature records isolated cases with different behaviours and treatments. Here we present the case of a 45-year-old patient with haemangiomatose lesions in both lobes of the liver, causing moderate to intense
abdominal pain
and a bloated sensation in the presence of an abdominal mass, but with hepatic and haematological functions remaining largely intact. Conventional ultrasound and CAT scan revealed diffuse lesions in both hepatic lobes, and this required the performance of a diagnostic laparoscopy to rule out hepatic metasteses or multiple
liver abscess
. As the findings consisted of large blue-black spongy masses involving both lobes of the liver, radical treatment of a resective type was not possible. After two years of follow-up, the patient still complains of diffuse
abdominal pain
of varying intensity, which is being treated with analgesics. Liver function tests have demonstrated a gradual increase in both liver enzymes and alkaline phosphatase, but without frank clinical evidence of clinical liver insufficiency.

An 84-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with high fever, and she suddenly complained of severe
abdominal pain
the next day. Computed tomography revealed a gas-containing abscess in the lateral segment of the liver, with spontaneous pneumoperitoneum. An emergency lateral segmentectomy was performed, and Klebsiella pneumoniae was cultured from the liver tissue, abscess, and blood. The patient made a satisfactory recovery and was discharged on the thirty-first postoperative day. Pneumoperitoneum caused by the rupture of a gas-containing
liver abscess
is rare, and to our best knowledge, this is the first report, in the English-language literature, of a patient who has undergone successful hepatectomy for such a condition.

Hepatic abscess
due to perforation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingested foreign bodies is uncommon. Pre-operative diagnosis is difficult as patients are often unaware of the foreign body ingestion and symptoms and imagiology are usually non-specific. The authors report a case of 62-year-old woman who was admitted with fever and
abdominal pain
. Further investigation revealed hepatic abscess, without resolution despite antibiotic therapy. A
liver abscess
resulting from perforation and intra-hepatic migration of a bone coming from the pilorum was diagnosed by surgery. The literature concerning foreign body-induced perforation of the gastrointestinal tract complicated by
liver abscess
is reviewed.

Pyogenic liver abscesses and colorectal cancer are rarely reported in association. Necrosis and infection of hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer are rare events which occur in the absence of systemic or local therapy. We report a case of a 72-year-old woman with a four day history of high fever,
abdominal pain
and a palpable mass in the right upper quadrant. Ultrasonography and CT scan showed a 13-cm solitary abscess in hepatic segment V-VI with multiple satellite metastases. For suspected imminent rupture into the peritoneal cavity a surgical drain was performed. Colorectal cancer was discovered during abdominal exploration and a colon resection was performed two weeks later. The search for the underlying cause of the pyogenic
liver abscess
should be an integral part of the correct management of liver abscesses. Association with a colorectal cancer is rare but should be taken into consideration.

We report a case of a 16-year-old female patient with sickle-cell disease with a
liver abscess
secondary to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). She had initially presented with jaundice and
abdominal pain
and subsequently underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreaticography followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy for removal of gallstones. However, post-cholecystectomy she presented with generalized abdominal pain and computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed a
liver abscess
. A pigtail catheter was inserted into the abscess and culture of the aspirate yielded MRSA (susceptibility pattern of the organism was compatible with community-acquired MRSA). She was treated with intravenous clindamycin for 6 weeks with complete resolution of the abscess.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is an uncommon mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract and is generally located in the stomach and small intestine. They usually present with
abdominal pain
, gastrointestinal bleeding, and palpable mass. Some patients present with rare symptoms that are more common in malignant GIST. Malignant GIST combined with a
liver abscess
has not been reported yet in the literatures. We report a case of 67-year-old woman who suffered from
liver abscess
combined by malignant GIST with central necrosis and fistula in the ileum. She complained of fever, chills, and
abdominal pain
. Abdominal CT scan showed huge
liver abscess
and ileal mass with air pocket. Small bowel series showed contrast material filling into the ileal GIST mass. An operation was performed and the final diagnosis was malignant GIST of the ileum with invasion into the sigmoid colon and urinary bladder.

A 40-yr-old gentleman presented with
abdominal pain
, nausea and vomiting since 3 weeks. CT scan of the abdomen showed a
liver abscess
but also a bone penetrating the left lobe of the liver. A 5-cm-long chicken bone was removed endoscopically. He was discharged on day 8 and was asymptomatic 12 months later. Endoscopic retrieval of an extraluminal foreign body causing
liver abscess
has not been reported previously.

Pyogenic
liver abscess
(PLA) is a process with significant morbidity and mortality and is a rare complication in an aisled way in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In addition to hepatic cyst infection, intracystic hemorrhage is another complication seen in ADPKD patients; however, the liver parenchyma itself remains normal. A PLA located in normal liver tissue in these kinds of patients has not been previously reported. Fusobacterium nucleatum is an anaerobic bacterium with rare involvement other than in periodontal infections. A 58-year-old Caucasian male, who was on hemodialysis treatment from July 2004 due to end-stage renal disease secondary to ADPKD, was admitted with fever, rigor, chills, weakness, and
abdominal pain
of 10 days duration. During that time, ciprofloxacin 500 mg, twice daily, gentamycin 80 mg/48 h, and vancomycin 1 g/week, were prescribed, but treatment was interrupted by hospitalization. Physical examination on admission revealed that the patient had a fever of 39.8 degrees C, pallor, chills, right upper quadrant
abdominal pain
, and hepatosplenomegaly. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a 5.3 cm diameter collection with irregular configuration located in the caudate lobe. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed a large multiloculated hepatic collection. The PLA was managed with antibiotics (metronidazole) and continuous catheter drainage (8Fr drainage catheters [Abocath-T, Abbott, Sligo, Ireland]) into the abscess. Fluid culture was positive for F. nucleatum. Complete remission was obtained after 12 days without complications. We describe a PLA by F. nucleatum, in a very rare location in an ADPKD patient undergoing hemodialysis without complicated cysts, managed with antibiotics and percutaneous drainage with satisfactory resolution.

Penetration and abscess formation in an adjacent parenchymal organ as presentation of a colon cancer is very uncommon. We report a rare case of pyogenic
liver abscess
as the first manifestation of an infiltrative and penetrating hepatic flexure colon carcinoma without liver metastases. A 50-year-old woman was admitted with right
abdominal pain
, fever and chills. The initial diagnosis was a pyogenic
liver abscess
. Subsequent CT scan and colonoscopy evidenced a hepatic flexure colon cancer abscessed within segment 6 of the liver. Eight months after a right colectomy and liver resection there was no evidence of disease. The occurrence of a pyogenic
liver abscess
should raise the suspicion of a silent colon cancer.
