Clinicopathological features and follow-up of 13 cases of acute segmental enteritis, representing the Chandigarh experience over the last 4 years, are reviewed. Symptoms and signs were those of small bowel obstruction, lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage and peritonitis. The ischemic lesions mainly affected the proximal jejunum. The involved segment was edematous, congested, and spastic with loss of normal luster. The mesenteric vessels and vascular arcades were pulsatile. The lesion was characterized by mucosal ulceration of variable lengths in the small bowel, progressing to full thickness necrosis in some cases. The histopathological examination revealed a number of scattered segments of acute necrotizing enteritis. Resection of the diseased segment was performed in all the patients. 1 patient died, giving an operative mortality of 7.7%. No single cause was implicated. Although the disease is not common, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of
acute abdomen
when diarrhea or
intestinal bleeding
is present at the onset.

Jejunal diverticulum is an uncommon, acquired condition, and the majority of patients are usually asymptomatic. Jejunal diverticula become clinically relevant when complications, such as diverticulitis,
intestinal bleeding
, obstruction, or perforation occur. A rare case of
acute abdomen
due to a perforated jejunal diverticulum is presented. The diagnosis was initially suggested by CT and confirmed intraoperatively when a 74-year-old male patient underwent a segmental jejunal resection with primary anastomosis. A review of the literature indicates the rarity of this condition, and therefore the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management are briefly discussed. An early diagnosis, based on ultrasonography and CT, and consequently prompt resection of the jejunum affected are the keys to a successful outcome. Because a longer duration of symptoms before operation correlates with a worse prognosis, the possibility of a clinical diagnosis of perforated jejunal diverticulum should be entertained as part of any evaluation of
acute abdomen
, especially in the elderly.

Spontaneous hemoperitoneum (SH) is a rare entity which can be life-threatening. Gastrointestinal neurofibromas are rare. Occasionally, such lesions may be the initial sign of NF1 in patients without any other clinical manifestations of the disease. The clinical presentations of isolated neurofibromatous lesions of the intestines are variable. In asymptomatic patient no treatment may be required and patient may be kept on follow up. Occasionally, they manifest with complications such as
intestinal bleeding
, obstruction or perforation. Surgery is the treatment of choice in symptomatic intestinal neurofibroma. We present the case of a 55 year-old male with
acute abdomen
due to rupture of isolated neurofibroma as one of the cause of SH. This case represents a rare presentation of isolated intestinal neurofibromatosis in a patient without systemic manifestations and highlights the need for high index of suspicion to exclude neurofibromatosis type 1 or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2b.
