Heparin elevates the level of NBT-positive monocytes in donors and patients with osteoarthrosis deformans and rheumatoid arthritis. Patient's rheumatoid arthritis cells were found the most sensitive to heparin. Excessive heparin-dependent activity of monocytes in this case reflects the activity of the rheumatoid process, the NBT test with heparin being more sensitive in the diagnosis of disease activity than measurement of red cell sedimentation rate or of blood C-reactive protein, gamma- and alpha 2-globulin levels.

Oxygen-dependent metabolism of neutrophils and monocytes and antioxidant defense and heparin and trimetasidine effects on them were studied in 39 patients with unstable angina. All the patients showed a significant activation of neutrophils and monocytes by NBT-test, insignificant one by chemiluminescence in active serum superoxide dismutase and reduced total antioxidative serum potential. There was also a moderate rise in the level of CIC in enhanced HBT-test. Heparin in unstable angina pectoris produced stimulation of oxygen-dependent metabolism of neutrophils and monocytes, ischemic damage to the myocardium was not changed. This was observed after treatment with preductal indicating antioxidant properties of this drug.
