The aim of this study was to determine and compare the antimicrobial activity of UV radiation of wavelength 253.7 nm (used in typical germicidal lamps) against Staphylococcus aureus on the surfaces of conventionally produced white ceramic wall tiles (matt and shiny) and the same tiles coated with
TiO2
using three different methods: RF diode sputtering, atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (APCVD) and spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD). Results clearly indicate that the bactericidal action of UV radiation is much stronger on the surfaces of tiles coated with
TiO2
than on the tiles uncovered. The strongest bactericidal effect of UV radiation was found for film prepared by APCVD. Results of experiments for shiny and matt tiles did not differ statistically. The use of ceramic wall tiles coated with
TiO2
films in hospitals, veterinary clinics, laboratories, food processing plants and other places where UV radiation is applied for disinfection should greatly improve the efficiency of this treatment.

Nanostructures are structures, mainly synthetic (nanosurfaces, cylindrical nanotubes, and nanospheres), which range between 1-100 nm in at least one dimension and can be engineered to a wide range of physical properties. This paper aims to explore the bacteriostatic and cytotoxic characteristics of nano-
TiO2
coated specimens of glass, stainless steel and ceramic with different thickness and roughness. The results show that stainless steel and glass specimens with a nano-
TiO2
coating thickness of 200 nm have a bacteriostatic effect of 97% and 100%, respectively after 30 minutes of UV exposure. Glass specimens with a nano-
TiO2
coating thickness of 750, 200 and 50 nm have a bacteriostatic effect of 86%, 93% and 100% after 60 minutes. Nano-
TiO2
coatings show a great bacteriostatic but not a cytotoxic effect, thus representing a valuable alternative for biomedical applications.

Effect of metal oxide nanoparticles on calli of two wheat varieties: Parabola (stress tolerant) and Raweta (sensitive) was studied. ZnO induced 10% larger membrane damage in Raweta calli.
TiO2
, Al2O3, and ZrO2 caused nearly 30% greater lactate dehydrogenase leakage for Raweta compared to Parabola. UV-irradiation of samples containing ZnO particles intensified this effect. Membrane lipid peroxidation in ZnO treated Raweta calli was twice as high as in Parabola and further increased after UV-irradiation.
TiO2
, Al2O3, and ZrO2 nanoparticles caused a 4-fold increase in malondialdehyde concentration in Raweta calli in comparison to Parabola calli. The nanoparticles studied damaged the cellular defense system by inactivating the antioxidative enzymes.
